A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
Early on in the game I got a bunch of unique relics by conquering easily accesible cities - milan, bordeaux, tripoli. The triggers in the files say that you need a 5+ piety gen to conquer a holy city for a 50% chance at a relic. I used those to load my king up to max stats. However late in the game (turn 100ish) I used my loaded up max piety king to burn a path of destruction accross the entire middle east, and did not receive a single relic from the 10 or so holy cities there or the governors I defeated.
Does anyone know if there is a limit on how early you have to snag the relics, or if a max piety general cannot get them, or if the king cannot? Just to double check I reloaded from a previous save game and blizted through that part of the campaign again following a different path to see if i just got unlucky. I got the same result.

Re: A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
I never noticed but apparently there are.

Re: A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
you can only have maximum of 8 'retinues'. as you know, the relic count as a retinue.
just make sure you King-of-death have a spare general to offload his removeable relics. or if you are desperate - try "~" and use the following cheat command to remove unwanted retinue
"remove_ancillary <your character's name> <your unwanted ancillary"
(unless i mispelled ancillary again)
i keep getting the "holy prepuce" for some reason... is the game trying to tell me something???

Re: A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
You triggers seem to be different from the ones I see.
Piety >3
10% chance for conquering holy city
30% chance for conquering holy city on Crusade
General cannot earn a relic if he already owns one
When the owner dies of old age his son has 60% chance of inheriting the relic, provided he has >2(two) piety.
Holy Pepruce only comes from Hamburg and Bordeaux. It is the only relic that comes from 2 different cities but other than that they shouldn't be popping up all over
With only a 10% chance per city of earning a relic there is a pretty good chance (rough guess = 25%) that you would not get even one after taking 10 holy cities. I don't feel like doing math.

Re: A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
I'm using factionheir's vnv fix. He bumped the required piety up to 5, and the chance of getting the anciliary to 50% (75% on crusade). If you notice, the desc file also tags this retinue as "unique" which means there can be only one in the game (not just on your general). I did not know about the 8 anciliary limit, but it certainly makes sense. Thanks for telling me.

Re: A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
You must be using an old version then. The current one lowered the chances to 25% for christian, and 33% for muslim relics with 50% if on crusade/jihad (in addition to higher piety reqs)

I dont believe the 8 artifact limit is added by FH's fix.

Re: A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
Didn't set any limit. Those limits are all hardcoded.

Re: A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
I got the "Ark of the Covenant" after taking Cairo in a Crusade, But then the same Prince, With high Command, Chivalry and Pity didn't get anything when he took Jerusalem in the Second Crusade.
I'm not sure if thats because its limited or because it only fires due to certain circumstances.

This is the first time I've seen the 100th turn in a Total War game referred to as "late in the game".

It's all relative to how long it takes you to win or quit, I suppose.

Re: A limit to how many artifacts you can have?
Well, by 1275 the Black Death has visited and the Mongols should even have a homeland. It is usually just a mop up action by then in a vanilla campaign, if one is blitzing and not being chivalrous. It seems that on a VH strategic setting things develop fast because the AI attacks more and gets excommunicated more often which allows the human player to expand more rapidly. If you sack all the time you have plenty of cash to recruit and build just about all you want as fast as you want.

Train your priests in cities with at least a cathedral. This will make them bishops with 4 piety (irc). If you train enough priests you will get an theologists guild. I had a city with a cathedral and the theologists HQ and some of my priest started with 10 piety. I was training saints. :laugh4:

Also, send them to areas with high heresy or an opposing religion, and let them sit there for awhile as it becomes more "clean." You'll get anti heresy or growing faith virtues. It helps if you have a lot of priests together to do this, too.

Isn't this the best way to approach getting these priest's "Catholic Church" status advanced as well?

Certainly. The anti Heresy (as opposed to anti Heretic) traits add an additional bonus to their eligibility. It's easy, if you're say, France, and you take Zarazoga to send a mess of priest down there and have them hang out for a bit as the city converts to full catholic. as the gain the various levels of anti heresy you'll notice a plethora of them becoming Cardinals, often with very high piety.
To insure a long line of popes, make sure that you have Cardinals of varying ages, developing between 8 to 10 piety, depending on what other factions are obtaining. Electability bonuses can place a lower piety Cardinal above a higher piety one. also a strong alliance with the pope helps to insure: Cardinal promotions and Preferred status for your Cardinals.
If you manage 5 or 6 cardinals, you can rule the papal elections easy.

Thanks for the reply...
Is it possible to have the Pope as well as EVERY Cardinal be from your faction? Total monopoly on the Catholic Church? heh...
