The Mediaeval Baebes

The group. Not a random tart in a wimple :7princess:

I've heard of them a few times. They perform medieval songs to semi modern music; some songs are more traditional in tone than others. Today was the first chance I had to listen to anything by them. An author whose website I check occasionally had a link to a video of them singing a medieval carole.

Five minutes later I'm on the group's website downloading the five sample tracks.

Quarter of an hour later I've ordered all 6 albums. :wall:

Perfect for a frog to write her medieval fiction to.

Well after having listened to some of their stuff, I can safely say that I have to add yet another group to my "albums to buy" list. Very cool stuff. :2thumbsup:

I had a friend play some MB for me a few years ago. I liked what I heard, but when I when I searched for their albums and listened to some samples, the samples were not good enough for me to plunk down some cash. I really want to like this group. I like the concept and they've beautiful voices, but the songs themselves didn't click with me. Now that you bring them up again froggy, I'll probably take another listen to them - maybe I was not in the right frame of mind last time I heard them.

Argh! No! No! No!

Beautiful as their voices may be, there's one reason I cannot stand them: my neighbour opposite my room. She is constantly playing gothic music, Danny Elfman music (at least, Sweeney Todd) and recently this. Problem is she sings along, and although not badly it is driving me up the walls. Yet every time I ask her to stop it sends her into a thorough sulk and the rest of the house asks me to apologise... ack.

Sometimes you need to make a goth smile in order for that goth build character.

Nice music and song, but the ambience and the fangs made it look like a coven of witches. Lacking five though.

No. I avoid watching so-called historical drama for the good of my blood pressure. The inaccuracies and blatent deviations from fact make me grind my teeth. I'm one of those anal historian types.

My favourite two are the one in the video I linked to, and 'return of the bird' from the website. They're ... less dressed up, if that makes sense. Less of the modern tones in the music.

Yes. That's why I didn't search for a sample song before. "Oh blimey! They look like a bunch of tacky wannabes who think that a long dress made out of nylon makes them accurately medieval. Ugh!"

The album covers are a right mix. There's a nice one with medieval artwork on them. There's some with photos of the group. There's one with scariness on it. The scary one was the first I saw. I had to go back and check this wasn't a punk rock spinoff. :sweatdrop:

Anyway, dare I say it, those baebes are kinda smexy. Hmm, after listening to their previews, I can safely say that they have very good voices, and can indeed sing. But I don't think I'll be acquiring their albums anytime soon. Mediaeval music isn't exactly something I'll be listening to on the bus to and from school etc. :confused:

It's supposed to be one of the more accurate historical dramas that have been made, certainly when compared with the more acclaimed but far less accurate Elizabeth I, which in turn is supposed to be far less heinous in its history than Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth. Give it a try.

I first heard them a few months ago, and of course absolutely LOVED their music.
Never bought any but after seeing this thread I'm going to go and buy it. Thanks for the reminder. I love this type of music.

A friend of mine loaned me a copy of Mirabilis a couple years back and I fell in love with it. My favorite track is Mark Hur var Skugga. I hadn't heard anything from their other cd's yet, though.

I think the "scary" cover looks nice and stylish, but the music? Not sure, might have to listen to more samples, but that one you linked to I didn't find very convincing.

One track sounds very much like what you'd get if you mixed rap and classical medieval together. :inquisitive: I can't decide if I hate it or not. Lol, I can see it being pasted over the opening credits sequence of some TV series based around a medieval lady named Isabella who Breaks Repressive Stereotypes In A Positive Way(tm). "My name is Isabella" :poses with crossbow, kicks knights in the crotch while showing a lot of leg:

Other than that it's all good so far. Their version of 'There is no rose of such virtue' is inferior to the version recorded for the TV adaption of Ellis Peter's Cadfael novels IMO. The monk choir from that version sounded a lot more tender, and it's a piece which is meant to ooze tenderness.

EDIT: You know, there's an unexpected benefit to having these CDs, and it's huge. There's version of the lyrics, and translations! I've been hunting for lyrics and translations for some of these songs for years!
