Legion vs. Phalanx online tournament

IrishHitman + Potocello (Kingdom of Macedonia) vs. Lovejoy + Antisocialmunkey (Roman Republic)

The game started off with the Romans approaching the Makedonian phalanx, and attempting unsuccessfully to get behind it. Antisocialmunkey had a large mercenary phalanx, but that got eliminated by Poto's phalanx due to the advantage of the hill.

Game degenerated into a slugging match with various attacks from practically all directions.
I formed a semicircle formation to prevent cavalry and infantry attacks, and defended myself until Poto had beaten antisocial, and we then both crushed Lovejoy.

It was elimnated due to something with the hill. I inflicted a total of about 3 casualties in the minute before my main lie disappeared.

I was doing okey against you at the start I think. When Anti lost his army I just went suicide and just charge everything :P I knew I couldn't win against both of you. :shame: Thats why I go nuts at the end - as you see if you look at replay - I'm not that much of a bad commander! :P

This was the second game we played. It was me and Lovejoy (Makedonia) vs Antisocialmunkey and IrishHitman(Rome).

At first Irish was able to beat me on my left flank, concentrating all of his troops there. I was able to swing some of my phalanxes around to help out, but he was able to keep the pressure on. I then noticed that Lovejoy was having similar issues with his flanks so i sent my Companion Cavalry over to help him out. We were able to rout a good amount of Anti's forces which freed up some of Lovejoy's troops. Lovejoy then brought some troops over to help me and i started to do charges on the rear and flanks of Irish's men. We were able to rout his army as well.

Victory fell to Makedonia. Good fight guys, it was a close one.

I was the KH, Poto was Saba, Love was the Aedui, and Irish was Macedonia. In short, elephants vs swordsmen is hilarious. Once again Irish's Companions won the day in a very close match.

That one was really cool. Antisocialmonk had me in his pocket. I was lucky and managed to beat his cav, but at that time his troops had surrounded me completly. If it wasn't for your heroic charge I would have lost in a minute. := Recommended replay. This one is cool.

Really I think this tournement is showing that a well supported phalanx trumps the Romans. Rome just can't effectively kill Companian Cavalry.

Well, I don't know... so far I've seen mostly Greek generals leading Roman armies against Greek armies lead by Greek generals.

I'm a infantry general with KH/Romanoi. I can win an infantry fight but those Companions are hard to take down with the 4 cav limit. Atleast that's what I've been told: 4 Cav including elephants. However, I didn't see this on page 1.

Also, with the Romans - what about using older units (Camillian on Polybian) like Velites in Marian? There's also the issue of the Bruttians, Lucianians, Ligurians, and Campanians aren't even listed in it while Samnites are. I would think that the Italian Allies would be fair game for Rome.

so far, it seems that all of us play with Hamachi so there shouldn't be an issue there. :2thumbsup:

as for the mod pack, you will have to have a completely clean version of RTW version 1.5 and a completely clean version of EB 1.2.

i could play tomorrow sometime around 4:00pm eastern time.

that is too early for me. I can at 8 pm central... 8:30 to be sure

so i gotta reinstall everything? that is lame. Maybe i can install it onto the RTR extra folder i got... dunno if it will be compatible

I'm still available as the Ptolemies. Unfortunately, I have to play online with a CD key as I can't seem to get Hamachi to install on my computer. I'm in Wisconsin, so US Central time, but I'm pretty flexible on Friday and Saturday.

Edit: You should probably specify what battle size to use, Belisarius. I wouldn't be surprised if Large were assumed, but it would be best to have it in the rules.

Just wanted to say I'm very, very pleased the Romaioi got their asses whooped. I can't wait until I get my damn laptop (Saturday, whohoo!) and see those replays as well as face some Romaioi on the battlefield.

I am GMT +10 though, seems that there are lots of american GMT-5's and 6's here. Although I guess I could be available anytime saturday.... if my opponent is a late riser I could be doing an all nighter coked up to the eyeballs. Let me know.

To address some of the issues presented.
There is no cavalry limit, we have decided that, should a player choose to overdo it, he will have an unbalanced army, also cavalry is expensive and not to mention the fact that, while cavalry may win you the battle, at the end of the day, we all know it was the infantry that paved the way to victory.

Second: size issues. The purpose of the trial battles was to try out everyone's online PC capabilities. "Large" seems to work for mostly everyone. If you are not sure about your performance, then ask the person hosting the game to lower unit number to "Normal". Also, tweaking your settings and putting everything on "low" will boost performance and may even let you use "Huge" armies.

Blxz, we will take into consideration the time issue when making match-ups. Once you know who your opponent is, you can discuss and settle on a suitable time for the both of you.

And FYI, you go to the User CP button on the top-left of the page, go to "Edit signature" and copy/paste the picture's link between the "[IMG]" code, like so:

1) For the Romani, can you use older types of units like Velites(Polybian) in Marian because Romani players won't have any missile units after Polybian by your Unit Limit I?
2) What exactly does this mean?

This statement seems a little ambiguous. What exactly is the ratio referring to? Is it Legion/Phalanx to Other Units? For example, if a Mak player has 6 phalangites, he can only have a max of 3 Companian Cavalry or 3 Thracian Peltastai? And by mercenary, are you refering to Thracian/Galatian/etc type units that are included on the roster but aren't ethnically part of that faction?

Besides, i have found while fighting Gabeed that if a romaioi player is capable of pushing on his flanks or at least screening them, is often in the advantage since the roman units have better morale and swords which are a boost in an atrittion battle.

A phalanx is an anvil: ie a defensive unit
A legion is a hammer, use offensively and youll push those hellenes into submission.
And don't be scared to attack frontally, even a phalanx, that way your forcing your enemy to commit troops to hold his line, hence he is less able to flank.

i got an older version of Hamachi. It is supposed to be the only one that works with starcraft, that is why i got it.

the question being, different Hamachi versions work together?

You can use Polybian units in Marian reforms, and Camillan in Polybian. The ones that don't change their equipment etc. with the reforms (i.e. Hastati, Principes, Triarii)

Sorry, I guess that was a bit ambiguous. The ratio of faction/mercenary units of the same type, i.e. 4 Principes/Hastati and 2 Samnite Mercenaries, for example.

Okay thanks for the clarification. So the the faction/mercenary of the same type, that onyl applies to the heavy infantry and not our cavalry right? So for example, I can take as many of the Elite Cavalry of the Italian Allies as I want without a limit because they aren't phalanx/legion?

Also what about letting the Romans use the Itallics Regionals during the Polybian Era since Polybian Roman armies were 1/2 Roman and 1/2 Allied Armies with 3 time the allied cavalry as the Romans? I mean, only the Pedites Extraordinarii are more cost efficient than the rest of the Roman units and would make up for the lack of low end Roman spears. The included units would be Samnites, Campanians, Ligurians, Lucianians(missile), and Bruttians.
