Um, all oficers in the British army bought their commisions. Only a very, very small number were promoted from the ranks. It was the way the British army was run. Most of the soldiers would only trust an officer who had 'true breeding'.
The French on the other hand promoted frequently from the ranks and several of Napoleons Marshalls were originaly Privates. Napoleon wanted quality, not men with money.
Hence "lions lead by donkeys", and the war may have arguably been over sooner.Quote:

Guys, help me out on this one. Any thoughts on the following problems?
1* (Easy) In the tactical battle screen does the AI have an unfair advantage if I set the difficulty level at EXPERT? When tuning the troop stats I always set the difficulty level to EXPERT in my custom designed battles (for example to test the melee results between heavy and light cavalry). I have a feeling that the AI has an unfair advantage at the EXPERT setting. Is this true?
2*(Easy) Column #45, Unit Specialties Labels in the Crusaders_Unit_Prod11.txt has the following strings and enumerated values for some of the units :"DEFENDING_RIVER(1), DEFENDING_CASTLE(1)". Are there any other strings that the AI would recognize? For example "DEFENDING_FOREST(4), DEFENDING_BUILDING(3)". I am trying to make light infantry deadly in the woods, forests and other broken terrain. I have not found a way to fix this. This might help.
3*(Easy) Lancers and heavy cavalry had an advantage when attacking infantry. Lancers had a longer reach and the heavies could just break through by sheer weight. There is a column that says Cav_Attack_Bonus. But none for Infantry_Attack_Bonus. How do I give an infantry attack bonus to an unit?
3*(Challenging) How to make infantry form square when being charged by cavalry? The square formation should be nearly impervious to a cavalry charge but should be vulnerable to volley fire from deployed infantry and should be very vulnerable to artillery. I have played quite a few battles with the Napoleonic mod on the MTW. The inf vs cav interaction is just not right When charged by cavalry, infantry almost always runs away. Rather it should form squares and weather the charge.
Could we change the animation for one of the formations, say the wedge, and change it into a square formation? The wedge is not a Napoleonic formation anyway. Is it possible to change the animation for the W command from a wedge to a hollow square and give anti-cavalry bonus to the unit only when the unit is in this formation? If we could it would be perfect.

I can help you with the first concern.
I am prety positive that on Expert seting the AI gets a moral bonus of +2or3 (not certain on which). I would suggest that you test units on Normal or Hard, as on easy your troops gain the moral bonus.
I thought as much. Thanks o good brother. Now if only I could find out how make the AI form squaresQuote:

I am the (official) stats adjuster for the Lords group. Indeed I have given the infantry some additional bonus for using deep ranks. This in a crude way simulates the square. But not quite.
Have you played Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle?
No, I havn't tried it. Do you recomend it?
The only Napoleonic Computer games i posses are the BattleGround series Napoleon in Russia, and another game that i can't quite remember as it is boxed away somwhere, it was based on the 1813-14 campaign I think.
Napoleons last battle is a bit of a flawed game but playable none the less, its where the sounds for the sound pack are got from http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif Fields of glory is an all time classic if you want some poor sprites but good gameplay.
Cuirrassier after playing alot of battles with uxbridge, deep formation works just as effectively as a square i think. Cavalry cant smash through it due to there being too many troops. The infantry in deep are always losing badly but the numbers they have easily send cavs of any kind running home to mummy.

Giving the attribute "STRONG" in the unit class labels for infantry units seems to make them stand fast and receive cavalry with closed ranks.
I am experimenting this further. Hopefully I would be able to push the tweaks into the 1.8 version of the mod.

anyone heard of the new Cossacks 2 napolionic wars looks very nice.
new screenshots of it here.
http://www.tothegame.com/screenshot.asp?screens=10807
Hmmmm Looks nice However, playing the first Cossacks games leads me to believe that this will still be missing something.....i cant quite put my finger on it, but definitely something....nonetheless it looks pretty cool, any release date??
Well if full authentic, military tactics cannot be implemented, then i'll be dissapointed with Cossacks 2. However, it is Napoleonic and is something I like quite alot, so I will buy it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif
Cossacks was perhaps the worst thing to ever happen to gamers of the Age of Wallenstein to Frederick (ie. between the Middle Ages w/c is very well depicted in games and the Napoleonic wars which are also pretty well depicted. Excepting, of course, the American Revolution.)
I suppose it's ignored because it is better known for the splendor of its uniforms rather than solid tactics, but there were many great battles, many 'famous victories' during this period.
The game has many good points w/c I hope are picked up by other companies like, oh lets say, Creative Assembly. I like the idea that a company must be formed from a CO (in reality this would be a Captain, an Ensign and a couple of NCOs) w/c 'take posts' like they would in reality. I was an ROTC company commander and that brings back very fond memories. The troop types are more than complete as are the technologies. There is one major flaw though... The game is an RTS. Which often than not means mindless AI assaults en masse with precious little maneuver. Its all fireworks and blood, no solid 'strategy' no place for the armchair Marlborough or Frederick to really get a taste of Blenheim or Mollwitz. For pitys sake there are no morale rules. More men died of disease than of bullets in war and realistically troops should not take the horrible casualties that they do in Cossacks. They're not soldiers, they're robots in uniform.
Now, if it had been a Total War or Napoleon's Last Battle type of game, with those techs and units then that would have been perfect. As it is you got all this history, beautiful graphics, troop types and techs dressed up with no where to go.
Cossacks 2 will be so good
I loved cossacks and this is cossacks with moral fatigue and some other stuff set in the NAPOLEONIC WARS
The british army has the finest marchers on the planet.... bar the Chinese, but they beat their troops into submission.
Hmmm, well chaps the new date for the Nap mod will be pursponed i expect till NEXT WEEK.

The work continues we are all busy adding bits to the script. You all have been very patient and most helpful with your suggestions and feedback,We are all working very hard to make this mod have a total Napoleonic look and feel to it, so that involves alot of changes in many areas some of them quite tedious. But be assured your patience will pay off in what we hope will be a good all around Napoleonic Campaign for all to enjoy. Thanks to all LOS
