Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Happy birthday DDW! Oh, the fun you will have with those recent purchases. For MTW, I'd highly recommend the XL Mod. You can find that, and the other popular MTW mod, BKB Super mod here https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=40
Also, Napoleanic mod is good if you want a different taste after a wihle.

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Oh,well... That was a pity. I was liking Rutilus.... I guess I'll need to get a new one...

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Yeah, sorry once again. Fortunately we have several interesting candidates available. I will list them later.
Thanks for the well wishes and advice :2thumbsup:
p.s. I actually have a Polish niece, so trust me when I say, the Polish are okay :2thumbsup:

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
MTW is good enough that you can play it OOB. Once you've played it for a while you can try a mod to suit your taste. The big 3 are MedMod, XL mod, and BKB's Supermod. They are all slightly different, but you really need to find out what you like and don't like about MTW first. Napoleonic: Total War is excellent if you like that period of history, although the AI does have a problem in that it leaves its infantry on Skirmish. Still, the crackle of gunfire makes me all warm and tingly ~:)
VI is much more like STW in that its a smaller campaign with fewer units. I wouldn't bother playing as the Vikings - too easy as their units are much better than anything the other factions can produce, and their navy is unbeatable. Mercia & Saxons are the easiest British factions as they get Huscarles which kick everyones ass (apart from the Vikings, natch).

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Swordsmaster, on the subject of avatars, I have done some spring-cleaning of the Table in the FAQ and by my reckoning, we have 7 unassigned ones:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showp...25&postcount=1
Details of most of them are in the library, with the exception of Vibius Domna and Oppius Aemilius, both 17 year olds.
Take your pick, Swordsmaster. Hopefully the Consuls will keep you out of danger next time - we have enough Lower House generals, that Upper House ones really should not have to fight.
BTW, I have also put up tables of the "four families" in the library to complement the visual family tree:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showp...30&postcount=5
I think we should roleplay family bonds a bit more (they don't have to be happy families, but we should acknowledge the relationships).
Let me know if anyone spots any errors in the revised tables.

I'll take Luca Mamillius, then if that's ok, he's old enough and with a bit of experience too...

Fine - he is Gaius's adopted brother (and mine too by marriage). :2thumbsup:

Well, it'll all stay in the family, then :2thumbsup:

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Hmm... seems like the Laevinus family are 'cursed'? They have the highest number of dead so far, shedding the most blood for the republic. :P

Great Idea !
Probably the only thing I've missed thus far in this PBM, and especially in the deliberations, was the bonding between the families. The different factions shouldn't necessarily confine themselves to their own clan, but they should make more of impact on the senate floor. Hopefully that 'll happen now.

Privileged.
And Econ, Quintus Libo (me) was actually adopted into the Laevinius family, not by marriage as your chart indicates. Which brings me to another point, isn't it odd that my avatar, Quintus, has the traits sickly wife and ignorant wife, but isn't married? Just throwing that out there.

Oh dear. Maybe she died of disease but does not know it?

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
I don't update the names of wives and children during a Consulship because, frankly, keeping all the Bios 100% accurate is a pain in the ass. I will make sure it is all fully updated during all elections, but during active Consulships, you'll just have to make do with the First Consul's Reports.
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Yes, but if you when you did my picture, you did the wife at the same time right? And that picture has the traits.
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Um, I just checked the most recent savegame and Quintus Libo does have a wife - 14 year old Licina, who according to the family tree is a daughter of Decius Laevinus. So by my reckoning, that makes him a Laevinus by marriage. Glaucus: if you haven't already can you load up the savegame (sort by date, we're on Spring-5 already) and take a look? Cheers.
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
I grabbed the picture from the First Consul Reports, I did not take it myself. As such, I haven't gone in-game to look up your wife's name. I will do a full update, including wives, when the Consulship ends in less than a year.

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
BTW, nice battle report, Wonderland. :2thumbsup: The screenshots were very sweet - especially the one of the Romans crossing the river. When the units are all jumbled up, they look more striking - Ludens did something similar with Gallic warbands in the EB screenshot thread.
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Thank you econ . Ludens' screenshots are awesome indeed, I love the stuff in that thread. I borrowed your style of presenting the images and story, in terms of the image and bold description underneath, with other stuff on top, hope you don't mind. I found it to be the best way, some other things can be confusing, or not so pleasant.

I see the problem, the family tree wasn't updated, so that person on that tree I thought was me was actually someone else. That tree is before I joined the family. No matter, I'll get that savegame now.

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
If anyone is getting bored waiting for the Consuls to call them to action (cough...), I just thought I would share something that Mount Suribachi unearthed.
It's a sub-mod of RTR PE that brings back the 3 Roman factions, Senate missions, civil war and all. It includes a lot of the sub-mods we are using - metro-naval and Roman leadership traits etc. It's a beautifully executed piece of work - the four shades of Roman units are nicely done. It may be just the ticket for someone looking for variety or for a little more direction than you get with the usual free-form "conquer the world" RTR Roman campaign.

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
we can just download that on top of our current install? or will that screw it up and need another different folder? If you get what I'm asking.

Unfortunately my employers don't let me play RTW at work ~:(
And they probly take as dim a view of glory-hunting twenty-somethings as Publius ~;)

I'm afraid you need a separate sub-folder. It is for RTR PE 1.6 - we are stuck with RTR PE 1.5 (+metro-naval). The good news is that it is installed on RTR PE 1.6 using the mod-swapper JSGME, so you can have a single folder that plays both vanilla RTR PE 1.6 and also this 3 Roman faction sub-mod.
Just be careful installing all the components - there are a lot, so make sure you always choose the right folder (ie your copy, not your original vanilla RTW) etc. I messed up my vanilla install when I tried to install another mod over the weekend. So I had to uninstall everything and reinstall. Then trying to get this mod I just recommended, I messed up installing the RTR PE 1.6 patch, losing my vanilla install again. I have not had the will to uninstall/reinstall my vanilla copy again.

Well, I don't expect our Consuls will be getting bored - loading up the savegames, the Republic seems to be getting quite a handful to manage. (Why do I keep wanting to call it an Empire?)
And since when has trying to get things done been called glory-hunting? :charge: Everything I have proposed has been for the good of the Empire,..., I mean Republic... It's all Obi-Wan's fault. He's jealous. He's holding me back. He never listens to me, I am a more powerful Jedi general than he will ever be, Padme...

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
It's a hard life, being acting consul, especially if you have a timeconsuming job beside it. I must say I was relieved to turn control over to Mount Suribachi, after which I am of course beset by withdrawal symptoms :laugh4:
To compensate for this, I have compiled some statistics for the vanquished nations so far, for your amusement :
Factions destroyed :
- Illyria
- The kingdom of Macedon
- Gaul
Illyrian casualties : 757
Roman casualties : 62
Average kill ratio : 12.2 - 1
Macedonian casualties : 5316
Roman casualties : 1598
Average kill ratio : 3.3 - 1
Macedonian ships sunk : 0
Roman ships sunk : 0
Gaul casualties : 1489
Roman casualties : 297
Average kill ratio : 5.0 - 1
For the update battle data see here.
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
are those from all battles against that nation, or just the figures from the major ones added together?
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
All the battles. Really, the number of battles is ridiculously high. One of the reasons I started promoting dual-consulships and shorter terms. No matter how dedicated the consuls are, they stay in power for long stretches at a time now.
I'm really curious, in a rather ghoulish way, what the totals will be for all the battles summed up.
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Interesting statistics. In fact, so interesting, that I decided to do you one better and compile the totals for the destroyed factions.
Each faction has some basic statistics about the war, and then the kill/casualty count (and related things) during the term of each Consul (and then the total), in the following format:
Consul
kills/casualties = kill ratio
(kills per battle) / (casualties per battle)
number of battles
Macedon
War years: 262-257
War duration: 5 years
Number of battles: 22
Number of battles per year: 4.4
Tiberius
8822/3153 = 2.80
802/287
11
Lucius
5316/1598 = 3.33
483/145
11
TOTAL
14138/4751 = 2.98
643/216
22
Illyria
War years: 261-260
War duration: 1 year
Number of battles: 3
Number of battles per year: 3
Tiberius
1865/196 = 9.52
933/98
2
Lucius
757/62 = 12.2
757/62

TOTAL
2622/258 = 10.2
874/86
3
Gaul
War years: 274-258

Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
:skull: :skull: :skull: :skull: :skull:
Too many dead Romans, not enough dead Gauls. We should have dragged that war on for another 4 years. Just to see if we could stack up 25k. :laugh4: :2thumbsup:
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Ahem... note the rather significantly higher Gallic casualty rate during my Consulship.
Stinking Gauls...
-
Re: The Will of the Senate - out of character thread III
Gawd, 20K Gaul dead ! And 18.4 is a kill ratio even the real Romans would have been proud of.
