PS3 vs. XboX 360

I have a 360 and my brother has a PS3, so I have played both.

I wouldn't focus on the specs if I were you, but instead focus on what you want from yoiur console. Ask yourself the following questions.

1. Do you want to play games online?
2. Which console does most of your friends have?
3. Look at the upcoming games for both consoles, which do you like better?
4. Look at the games already out for both consoles, which do you like better?

I would say those are the main questions. Choosing a console because it has slightly better specs is a little silly. If you were choosing between 2 PC's, by all means decide based on specs.

If online shooting is what you're after I would say buy a 360. When I got my 360 in Christmas 06 I got Gears of War with it. I ended up playing Gears almost every night with 7 friends for almost a year until Halo 3 came out now we play that and occasionally Gears. When GoW2 comes out we will probably play both Halo and Gears until the next major shooting title. The point is when your playing on Xbox Live with friends, nothing beats it. I'll admit its not for everyone though and also if your friends have PS3's get that instead.

Another point I would like to make is the fact that the PS3 will give you a longer lifespan. It is going to last longer mainly because of its Blu-Ray capabilities, among other things. Thats not to say you wont get your moneys worth out of the 360. Microsoft will probably keep pushing out good games for the 360 for the next few years.

Either way you wont go wrong and indeed the only way you can get it 100% right is to get both consoles. :2thumbsup:

When considering the hardware issues, also consider how long a generation of consoles lasts. All of these consoles are here to stay (I don't think we have Dreamcast here, though I could be terribly wrong) and things will just roll over to the next generation in short order. The Xbox launched late 2001; the Xbox 360 launched late 2005. That's four years. Given, Microsoft rushed production to get a swift strike, but still, we are talking around 4-6 years. Its 2008, three years after the release of the Xbox 360, two years after the Wii and PS3. If development proceeds as it has the last generation, we can expect the nex gen to hit in another four years or perhaps less. Will graphics (and gameplay, let's not forget why we are here) improve so drastically within the next four years that the hardware on the PS3 will come into its own as an obviously superior console? PS3 hasn't come out with a console exclusive of any significance in two years barring MGS4, so they will have to make up for the slow start.

If graphics are important to you, than by all means, consider the graphical lifespan of a console generation that will last maybe another four years. Course, I just bought a copy of Planescape: Torment, and the original Baldur's Gate, so I just might be biased against the flashier side of life. Regardless, the best way to future-proof is to just wait another year or so; that's what I did with the original Xbox. By then, you'll know where things are at, and a lot of good games will be really, really cheap.

I definitely think the PS3 has the better hardware of the two, but that doesn't add up to much if it's never used. Sony has been hemorrhaging exclusives pretty much since the PS3 launched. They've still got a few good ones left (MGS4, Little Big Planet), but a lot of former Sony exclusives are either going multiplatform or exclusive on other consoles.

Honestly, if I was going to buy one of the two systems, I'd probably go with the PS3- but it's not an easy choice.

I'm looking at purchasing one of these systems for my 10 yr. old step-son and I to play. This thread has helped a lot, especially since it is such a big investment. I'm leaning toward the P3, a weeks worth of overtime:whip: should cover it. Thanks a lot!

360 fans never claims it is beating the Wii in terms of sales.
I have however seen various people on TWC who own a PS3 that the PS3 is the best selling console there is despite the fact that last time I check it had never been able to beat the Wii in monthly sales.
Only few times has it been able to beat the 360.

And because it has some users who can't read, it must be the worse console?
If that's how it goes I could just say that the 360 users never claim that because they can't write. :dizzy2:

It was a long time since we had a console war over at TWC but I will see if I can try and find the thread where they explain how it was the fastest selling console.
Edit: Now I remember what it was.
They removed the Wii from the calculations since they didn't considered it to be "next-gen"(why they call it next gen when it's this gen is beyond me) and therefore doesn't count and picked a month where the PS3 actually managed to outdo the 360.
I find that BS.
Sure it may not have the power but it is still a part of this gen's console war.
Still the Wii is the best selling console this gen, there is no doubt about it.
The 360 may have the best games and the PS3 might last longer but they still can't compete with the gimmick of the Wii.:yes:

Just an update.

I think I have decided on a PS3 80GB. It will be released here in Europe the 27th of August. And it better be because I have tried to get a hold of a PS3 a little while now, but all the stores are empty.
They have however big stacks of Xbox360s in different editions.

I was contemplating on getting a Xbox360 in stead, but decided against it. One reason was the failure rate, the noise etc. Then I came over this: XB01 case replacement. the producers claim it will remove the noise and the dreaded RROD. Also... wouldn't this open up for an HDD upgrade?

Just another update...

The 80GB PS3 has been bought and I am impressed. I have not bought any games save for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (haggled it into the deal). I have also tested the internet thing and downloaded the demo for Star Wars: The FORCE unleashed. I am definitely getting that one when it gets out.
