I am offended by this. Not because of his death, but because Micheal Jackson jokes haven't been funny for years.

Well this thread seems to have a dual purpose of informing about Jacksons death and making jokes about it, seen as there is (or was ?) a monatorium on ridicule before the person is buried this thread should be about paying respect, going off topic may be slightly disrespecful, and mocking him certainly is...
Anyway i realise i am also being off topic, and as no one else seems bothered by mocking a man not yet in his grave ill just quietly retreat from this thread...
ok guys stop. i dont care what you think of him, its not respectful to make fun of a dead person until burial.
What? How does burial change anything? But there are two big rules of comedy,
1) don't make jokes about something that just happened and
2)a)don't make jokes about something too close. However,
2)b) If it's are on the other side of the world, then go for it.
So I can see how you may find it tasteless, hence why I said the joke was tasteless, but for all those outside of America its a free-for-all. :grin2:
looks pretty clear to me.Quote:

Two things Miotas,
1) Just because we are not physically in America, doesn't mean American members aren't reading the posts... they are
2) I think at is at least respectful to wait until someone is in thier final resting place before mocking them, it may still be a bit disrespectful to mock them after that, but at least it shows some respect.
Im not a fan of the man or his music, basic respect on the other hand....
Mainly think of his fans. People like Reenk, why should they be forced to listen to jokes about a performer they really liked minutes and hours after his death... its simply bad manners and i really don't like it!
I'd dare say this thread, and it's so-called contributors, is lucky, in extremis that I do not moderate here any longer.
Rest in Peace, Mister Jackson.
Kindly disregard the disrespect and lack of basic human decency shown here. Our kids know not what they do. Someday they will learn. But apparently, not today, your death-day.
God forfend any poster here meeting his untimely demise, only to be ridiculed and criticisized while his body is yet warm. One can only imagine the horror Mrs. Dave might experience visiting this site, only to read barbs and complaints about her recently departed husband, or her children's father.
Shame, I say.
This is pretty tame. You should have seen the threads and jokes that popped up after David Carradine died a few weeks ago on this martial arts forum I'm on. Pretty tasteless (but kinda funny).
Oh well.
Rest in peace Mike. You had some real talent back in the day. Too bad you turned out to be completely crazy later in life. Hopefully you'll be mainly remembered for the good and not the bad.
My thoughts:
Any jokes about rape of any kind, but esp concerning children is not only in bad taste, but extremely disrespectful, irreverent, and despicable. There is nothing even remotely funny about making jokes about people being humiliated and raped. Put it into a personal context and think what you would feel like if you as a child or you son got raped by MJ, and everywhere, everyone was making jokes about it.
With respect, JVA, commentary on Jackson can wait. Moreover, a criminal investigation was conducted, along with a trial, and Jackson was acquitted on all counts. As their is no demonstrable evidence of his guilt, we can table the critique until later. SF
I give up.
You fellas have your fun.
G'head... make fun of a dead guy. Haha!
He can't complain.
Who the hell cares what kinda suffering his family might bear?
Just:
remember that when your day comes. And it's always sooner than you think.
Snarky comment removed. SF
Silly me.
Theres was plenty of opportunity to mock the man, and there will be plenty more in the years to come.
I don't see why we have to mock him in the day of his death. Leave him alone for few days for the sake of those around him.
Sometimes I wonder why I don't get involved in any of the discussions in the Backroom. Luckily, a thread like this always comes along to remind me.
1. It's the rule in the Backroom to be respectful of the dead until burial.
2. If you can't stick by the rules, find another forum.
Sticking to rule no.1 above, his musical legacy will be considerable, although it was a legacy long before he actually stopped making music. While his later material was almost a parody of his image, his earlier material, beginning with his Jackson Five period, and probably peaking with his early solo stuff, was superlative.
Fine. I'll toss this out here. I kinda get the feeling that post was partially directed at me Kukri, if not then so be it, my following points stand.
First, people that I do not respect do not suddenly gain any from me when they pass on. Life doesn't work that way, people generally don't work that way, I don't work that way. The Falwell thread stands out in my mind here. The man stood for just about everything that I find abhorrent and wrong with American culture today, I did and do have zero respect for him. Same goes for everyone else who falls into this category in my view.
That said, I think we all can agree that some modicum of civility is appropriate in these situations. The issue is that I think there will probably be a wide divergence of opinions on what exactly that is.
Personally, I do not have any hard and fast rules on this. Generally a day or two until said individual is laid to rest in the ground, or whatever wake or service is done seems appropriate to me. Excessively drug out funerary arrangements tend to invalidate this. During this period, I would agree that it is appropriate not to lambast said individual, print gratuitously horrendous stories about them, or the like. Excessively negative commentary is out. The family and friends of said person should be left to their grief. However, should those surviving members doing anything excessively dramatic or confrontational such as lashing out at others, then in my opinion all bets are off. As I said, I may not respect the deceased, but I believe in respecting the deceased's survivor's right to privacy up to and through the funeral proceedings. Saying nothing is fine. Neutral or positive things are fine. Doing crap like the Fred Phelps does is beyond wrong and immoral. Of course the Org is not a democracy and the powers that be obviously have their own opinions on what should stand. I believe I have complied with the spirit of what I understand to be the guidelines.
As to my comments, I would say it was neutral, and I was/am sincere. He did have a lot of talent early in life, and I enjoyed his early music growing up and even now still. It is indeed sad that he turned out to be so crazy later in life. Before anyone jumps at me saying that, spare me and get off your high horse. He was crazy, he did a lot of very stupid things knowingly and earned every bit of his reputation, and I am still undecided if he actually did molest children or not. I did not want to elaborate on this, but I am doing so now in order to clarify my statements. I did like his music. I was sad to see him fall so far later in life. I do hope he is mainly remembered for the better parts of his early life rather than the worse. I think my earlier summary was a fair, even set of statements and will leave them be.
That is all.
This thread is closed. Anything needing adjudication will be reviewed.
Please note, irrespective of your opinon of the deceased, it is Backroom custom to observe a "don't bash the dead" period of time. This "time out" period lasts until the departed is interred or other rites are concluded.
Should this thread re-open, and should you wish to lob vitriol on the departed, kindly wait the appropriate interval.
EDIT
I will not reopen this thread and will visciously stomp on any thread/poster addressing allegations regarding Mr. Jackson or cracking wise about him until his rites are complete. Please note, that was not a threat, but a promise.
I understand that Mr Jackson's funeral has now taken place. He does not seem to be likely to buried anytime soon, but I think proper observance has been given.
The thread is re-opened. I understand there is much controversial that may be discussed, so let's try to behave with some dignity.
Thank you kindly.
A gold coffin, hysterical speeches, this in a city that's broke.
You gotta love it! :laugh4:
Ok, the first controversial point:
The media coverage, the fan reactions, the comments by "important" people. Was I the only one getting my stomach twisted by all that?
Also:
Why wasn't Jackson protected from himself? I mean, he's a pretty damn obvious case of a mentally ill man, and he was a danger to himself. Why was he allowed to have all those plastic surgeries? Why didn't anyone stop him? Why did the doctors operate on him, instead of doing the obvious, which was to send him to counseling? It should be obvious that he wanted to "fix" his appearance because of mental illness. I mean, Jackson was a handsome man back in the day. He had no need for plastic surgery, but he was mentally ill, like how an anorectic is always fat in their own eyes. Aren't doctors taught ethics? Aren't they supposed to care about the patients well-being and nothing else?
Al Sharpton calls for a day of mourning and a stamp
this man loves MJ waaaaay too much.
a day of mourning? a stamp?
It is sad that MJ died but things have gone to far. When I put the TV on at my dinner tonight, I check the channels and... on channel 1 its the news = boring... on 2 its MJ's funeral... on 3 its MJ's funeral... on 4 its Holyoaks = gah... on 5 its MJ's funeral.
Things are going to far.
His memorial service is a mirror of his life, bizarre and gaudy. I can honestly say I've never witnessed such a crass memorial service as that one. It speaks volumns of those around him in life and in death. No dignity, none at all. I feel sorry for the kids having to witness such a travesty.
After all this media hysteria; I feel an urge to stress my indifference to the whole thing.
*yawn*
has the EPA spoken out about his burial arrangements? certainly after that much plastic surgery he´s not totally biodegradable? :smash::book:
I can't wait to see those doozies that Kukri spoke of.
He's to be recycled and turned into Legos, so kids can play with him for a change. :drummer:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I have spent an inordinate amount of energy avoiding MJ news. I'll wait several months before upping the click count on MJ related links and figure out what actually happened.
Hah, you don't know the half of it. L.A. looking for donations to defray security costs.
Let's see, an estate that's worth up to $500 million wants taxpayer donations to cover security costs for a circus of a funeral/tribute/concert that they promoted. I know where I'd be sending the bill... send in the clowns.
