The graphics were dated when it came out, get some mods for character models, but the Dark Engine has the distinct quality of feeling real. Graphics, no. But the sound has still to be beaten even after all these years, there is nothing like trying to map something out by just listening. If you are patient and methodical you will not die, you are in fact not allowed to kill on highest difficulty, and we hardcore Thief fans, well they never even noticed we were even there in the first place, we call it ghosting. We just took the loot, the guards possibly getting fired next day is our satisfaction.

^- second opinion.
And if you think we are dripping with fanboyism, wait what the rabid fan community comes up with, TONS of missions of amazing quality. Reading novels and poems goes a bit too far for me, but you should have gotten it by now.

Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
Thanks for the replies ... not sure why I never played this one. I think I was so overboard with Shogun that I just missed it and never caught up. I am now about a year or two behind in all games, which I think is a good thing 'cuz I save a lot of money enjoying games that have been out a while but are "new" to me. And my PC is aging too, so the newest games probably won't run well on it. So, $9.99 for a ten-year-old game that has withstood the test of time with flying colors like this sounds like a winner indeed.
Now I have to see if I can find my ninja suit, it's been a while.

Ah, more converts. Excellent :rubs hands together:
Be sure to post your impressions ... and let me know when you meet my cousins :frog:

Thief: The Dark Project was one of the first games to genuinely freak me out. In the second mission, where you have to go into a Hammerite factory/cathedral/prison, you start out in some mines. But not just any mines... oh no. Haunted mines with zombies. Not just any zombies... unkillable (kinda) zombies.
But the true test of any gamer's underwear color is to make a blind run into the Return to the Cathedral mission. Not going to spoil it, but if your pants aren't brown by the end of RTC, you're a better gamer than most.
Trust all of us when we say that this is 10 dollars WELL spent. And the life of the game increases when you download and play fan missions. Of course, I prefer to do a Lytha run of the game before starting fan missions, just to squeeze out as much enjoyment as I can.
(I am such a geek for knowing who Lytha is)

Could be worse, I am not really that much of a geek
And oh god yes. I made the mistake of picking normal skill level first round, and I was all 'what the hell is a hammer doing here', whacked it on the head anyway because it's fun but it didn't go down and chopped me up good.

dear god, didn't touch the game for months after that, and that place still freaks me out today.

lol, nice vid. :P
And yes, RTHC was one of the finest missions in the game. Another nice one I would say is the Hammer Novice one (I forget the name, haven't played in too long...Strange Bedfellows?). That was my favorite Thief mission of all time.
Frag is right, it is the sounds in Thief that really create the experience. They are soft, subtle, powerful, and as creepy as heck. I remember nearly jumping out of my seat at moments playing that game. :P
Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
My favorite mission is The Sword, it starts out harmless enough, cutscene should have hinted you that this isn't your everyday's job. You break into a normal looking mansion but what you find is complete insanity. Honorable mention goes to Life at the Party in Thief 2, the scope of that mission is bewildering. I missed that feeling in Thief 2 of actually traveling to a place, and Life at the Party delivered in spades there. That one mission is bigger then the entire city of Thief 3. Gah to Thief 3.

Yeah, Thief II was my favorite. I liked Life of the Party because there was just so much to do and explore, but my favorite Thief II missions were S&R and the Bank Mission. Those two are my standards of what great Thief Missions should be like.
And yeah, Gah to Thief 3 (I would say something else to Thief 3, but I want to keep it PG :beam:).
Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
S&R was boring imho, I am not that fond of Thief 2 despite it being the second best game ever made, I adore it for the fan-work but the campaign didn't do it for me. A few very good missions, and the Bank is absolutely awesome in every taffin way with all that marble floor, found the eater egg? It about a vault.
Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
Lord Bafford's is and was my favourite from the series. A perfect showcase for the game's core gameplay, it had a certain purity to it. There are levels which do every single element better - bigger, more complex, more humourous, more atmospheric, more challenging. Yet there's something about sneaking into a snooty oaf's mansion to steal his pretentious loot ...
"I'm going to the bear pits tomorrow. You wanna come with?"

lol, S&R boring?! ~;) I loved it because it was such a sand box experience and because it had so many options (like Life of the Party) to do so many things in so many different ways. In fact, I was such a noob that I played the mission over about 30 times trying to get into every little place possible (as well as all the ones that are supposed to be impossible to access. :beam:). And yeah, the Bank mission is my fav in Thief II. I remember one time I got this bot after me and was running like crazy. I thought that I had just lost it and I snuck up some stairs and opened a door, and there his big fr***ing eye was looking me in the face! I was so sleep deprive, it was so late, and I was so on edge that I completely freaked out. :P I honestly have never been scared or startled in any game except the Thiefs and SS2. :P (actually that is not true, Killing Floor managed to freak me out a few times too :P)
Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
Ah what to say it's Thief, you are either absolutely in love with it, or are an idiot, or you haven't played it, that makes you an idiot as well.

lol, yup. Either an idiot or raised on a desert island. :P
Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
I see what so many of you mean regarding the game's use of sound effects. Haven't had a lot of time free to play it, but I just started up the Haunted Mines. Didn't half jump when I heard that first groan. I mean, I knew there were zombies.. but I was expecting them to be there when I rounded a corner or something, not right under my bleedin' nose!

Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
Where's my thief 4 at?
All 3 of the games are great, even thief 3, which many people complained about because it was cut down to fit on xbox 1.
Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
Hated Thief 3. Not that interested in Thief 4 really, it's just never going to be the same.

+1
I really have low expectations for Thief 4 (to the point that I am not gonna buy it unless I hear some really good reviews from Thief fans who I trust), and Thief 3 was aweful. I don't know, maybe it would not have been bad as its own game, but it is not a Thief game.
Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
There was one reason and one reason only to not completely hate on Thief 3:
Shalebridge Cradle.

To be completely honest, I like that mission, but not as much as I like most Thief I and II missions. I think people like it so much because it was the only bright spot in a pile of dung, so it really stood out.
Re: Thief: The Dark Project hits online games shops!
The cradle makes that little bit of difference between me hating the game and strapping up a bomb-belt.

lol, my sentiments exactly! :P It was a great mission, but would have been much better if it was built in a real Thief game.
