I actually think Gerry Embleton paints better than McBride. McBride is IMO really bad at textures, he paints them way too smooth; his knights look plastic.

I guess it depends on which book you have, but McBride's artwork in the German Medieval armies in 1300-1500 inspired not at all to make models, while Embleton's work did.

I've read most of the other Ospreys from the ancient-medieval period.

I'm a big fan of Angus McBride, but I'll admit that it is a 'style'. Lots of beefy men, heavy armor, action and color. I like it, but I'm sure there is lots of room for artistic preference.

I've got a few other books that make good use of Angus McBride's work. I think they're all by Tim Newark:
The Barbarians
Women Warriors
Celtic Warriors

For those of you who like this sort of thing, I'd also recommend "Medieval Warfare Sourcebook (volumes I and II)" by David Nicolle, and "Warfare in the Classical World" by Warry (I think). David Nicolle's book doesn't have original illustrations, but it's full of Osprey-like goodness and lots of good photos and such.

Aurilian, what is the women warriors like?

Embleton I reckon did a good job with the MAA titles The Wars of the Roses and the one on Burgundian Armies, and his recent Warrior title on Landsknechts looks OK too....

Yeah, Burgundy and swiss books of his are good but alot of them are really bad. I think Turner should have done the images in WOTR book.

I have only read two books about the byzantine army (both awesomely illustrated by McBride) but they are not mine; they belong to a friend.
I don't have a credit card and, sadly, you can't find those books in bookstores where i live...

The book Rome's Enemies (3): Parthians and Sassanid Persians is well-written, but McBride's plates lack movement and look like statues - all except the plate of Indo-Iranian nomads which served in Sassanian armies.

BTW, I'm getting my second and third books in the series to add to my collection (will grow to an astonishing 3 books http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif), namely:

I don't have the book in front of me at the moment, but it's set up just like the Celtic Warriors book. If I recall, there are sections on Zenobia of Palmyra, Joan of Arc, Matilda of Tuscany, female warriors from Dahomey in Africa, South American women warriors, Sarmatian 'Amazons' and the like. It's probably almost as worthy as the Celtic Warriors book. Plenty of Angus McBride illustrations.

I ordered Stephen Turnbull's "Samurai Invasion: The Other Korean War" which is a very large hardcover book cheronicling one of the most glossed over parts of history, yet a very major one too. It's about Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Invasion of Korea, and it delivered the death blow to China's already weakened Ming Dynasty. It also sent Korea, one of the most wealthy kingdoms in the world at that time, nto absolute poverty, and bankrupted Japan.

Also, BKB, theres a new book out called "Warriors and Warlords" and it depicts ALL the art dne by Angus McBride. Thought yu might like that.
