Re: Favorite Anime Series, movie, or Manga?
The films of Hayao Miyazaki, especially Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service. The heros are often young, capable girls with realistic personalies that avoid too much cuteness (a rarity in movies, especially from a man), the films teach good values, and the stories and the worlds in which they take place are very original.
There isn't much other manga or anime that I'm into except Crayon Shinchan (see image below). As much as I appreciate it, anime is an intimidatingly large world that seems to create geeks. I didn't want to become one. :eeeek:
Re: Favorite Anime Series, movie, or Manga?
so anime turns people into geeks eh? The same can be said about people who have a love for history and the TW series, they too can be geeks.
I think the whole phrase 'geek' has just been taken over by people to describe others with hobbies that are strange and dont interest them. Theres no need to throw it about though, imo.
Re: Favorite Anime Series, movie, or Manga?
I make liberal use of the words geek and nerd at times, but I use them as a compliment..... My friends and I are way off the deep end.
Re: Favorite Anime Series, movie, or Manga?
I think it's wimpiness, dweebyness, and moronic behaviour that constitutes a geek or a nerd, not being interested in things that other aren't usually. Some (stupid) people missuse the word, of course, but that's in the minority. I remember this reatarded guy called me a nerd all the time just because I used intelligent words! And by intelligent words I mean words everyone here uses. The guy was clearly a moron and not worth my time so be aware of those people. I can't stands dweebs myself, but only when they act moronic.

Go hang out in Akihabara and you'll see what I mean.

Seeing it one evening on MTV as an adult and completely unfamiliar with that genre until then (somehow generally the Europeans have a weak tendencies for anime, at least that goes for the major TV stations), I was completely blown away with it. The animated series with topics as serious and as deep as only few movies I have lately seen. I was mesmerized and could only think “what kind of cartoon is this? No way can kids understand this! Hell, no way 98% of the adults can understand this!” Love, betrayal, death and pain, strong currents in a wild sea. I found it incredible.
The next I saw was Cowboy Bebop, and that remained my favorite anime of all time. Lol, I remember seeing the second episode about two weird fellas chasing some small dog and thought how utterly stupid that was. Than, accidentally, I managed to watch the fifth episode on TV as the next, The Ballad of Fallen Angels, and was once more blown away. The encounter of Spike and Vicious in the old cathedral was incredible, beyond description. I can recommend this serial to anyone. The movie was remarkable as well, though different than series, and I adored it to.
The music from the serial makes it an unforgettable experience. I always have it in my car, plays in my MP3 player whenever I’m off to field trips, and always, when I get to encounter someone who likes good jazz, they remain astonished by the quality of the music and can’t believe it is from a “cartoon”.
Eversince, I watched and gathered a ton of anime. A lot of them I didn’t like, DBZ, Evangelion: The End (or whatever), not to mention those horrible Digimon, Pokemon and x-on animes I simply can’t bear to watch. But those I’ve liked are, in no special order:
Trigun
Rouroni Kenshin OVA
Ghost in the Shell 1& 2
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Sen To Chihiro
Nausicaa
Hellsing
Akira (most remarkable anime movie, I’m actually translating the subtitles these days!)
Lately I discovered an anime called Naruto. Though I have disliked it seeing the beginning of it, considering it to be not serious at all, I was wrong, and it turned into an anime that made me laught he strongest and it was in times as serious as death sentence. Incredible mix, I recommend watching it too.
As for the people calling anime fans geeks or dorks, I only regret the fact that I never get to hear this in real life, only via various forums. My better half mocks me all the time, and she is the only one that can get away with it, but no one lese even tries to look at me the wrong way, hehe. Might lay on the fact that I’m two meters tall, weigh some 240 pounds and look like the meanest debt enforcer you ever lay your eyes upon (if I want to look that way, that is!). I have my own business, a construction enterprise, and I’m currently opening a side-business that will be involved in selling computers, creating websites and various programs, as well as maintaining those - basically, almost everything that has to do with computers. I speak several languages and have read thousands and thousands of books, have studied law and philosophy and have almost embarked on a career of a musician myself. I never speak much about my hobbies too, I write for a PC gaming magazine and never say a thing about it to my business associates. To them, watching animes and playing Total war is the same expression of nerd-ism, I guess. All depends on how one views it. But in my regular surrounding, the most women watch soapes, and the most horrible ones, but I never called them geeks. Guess why? ~:D

So voightcampf wants to be called a geek in real life? Strange...
damn it! I forgot Nausicaa! And nice to see another Escaflowne fan.
Byzantine Prince, whats the problem with the DVDs? Surely there are stores near you that sell anime and sci-fi? Speaking of this, I think that its an interesting sign of how mainstream some manga/anime is now, my local HMV has a HUGE DVD manga collection in it (by shop standards...one whole stand with maybe 100 DVDs), and we also have Virgin (decent) and also Forbidden Planet (specialist retailer)...Aberdeen must be full of manga fans (or my spending really is out of control).
~

That makes me a mere teddy-bear, my grizzly bear-sized friend.~D
I, too, was surprised by Cowboy Bebop' maturity of content. Ms. Kukri rents what she thinks are 'odd' movies for me thru Netflix - she knows I like Kurosawa movies, so she gets me foreign titles, animes, etc - stuff she doesn't care for (she hates subtitles; no problem for me). She also bought me a baseball cap with the word "GEEK" printed large on it. I wear it with pride. At 6ft, 200, I don't hear many snickers.
Spike is my favorite character.

Bear is a bear, my friend! ~D
My better half rolls her eyes and threatens that she’ll tell anyone that I am a geek actually. Though I am really the size I wrote, she pawns me all the time, even though she is 35 cm (sorry, can’t tell this in inches) smaller than me. And weighs significantly less. In matter a fact, she is somewhat of Kylie, just a little bit taller, but still…When she gives me the “Sauron-look” I crawl under the couch right away. ~D

I liked Spike very much, but I liked them all, even Vicious. Ballad of Fallen Angels, Jupiter Jazz, Black Dog Serenade, The Real folk Blues… Marvelous stuff.
Re: Favorite Anime Series, movie, or Manga?
Ahh, Cowboy Bebop is excellent! My favourite anime! When I first saw it I was suprised by the level of some of the jokes - not to mention the maturity of it. Unfortunately I have not seen all that many episodes - living in NZ bites arse, no decent anime on tv etc.

Another Lone Wolf Fan, eh. There don't seem to be much around here, although there shouldn't be a Shogun player who doesn't appreciate the excellent Comic/ Manga version. It's so much better than the TV-series which can be slightly ridiculous at times (Itto's hairstyle and other details).
Have a look here for some Previews

R'as
Edit: Stupid me, I didn't follow Lemur's link to amazon and thought he was linking to the dvd-collection of the TV-series. My fault. Both links show previews to the comic version.
Re: Favorite Anime Series, movie, or Manga?
Ahh!! I HATE America! This place is STUPID!!! THERE ARE SO FEW ANIMEs/MANGAs IN THIS STUPID LAS VEGAS!!! AHHH!!!!
Okay, I'm cool. I don't support terrorists or anti-americanism in anyway. But I WILL BURN THE WHITE HOUSE FOR MORE ANIME AND MANGA!!!!
Okay, now I'm really cool. ~D
I'm fifteen and I just love Cowboy Bebop, one of the few Anime's available here - I can't find any dam-ed Anime shop and the Manga has nothing more than Dragon Ball so...
That anime is surprisingly deep and ... you know ... put a strong message in pretty much almost every episode. One episode of it is ten times more worthwhile than a big-time Hollywood movie.
Ghost in the shell is extremely deep, again. It's amazing the Japanese devote that much effort on a cartoon...I appreciate it.
So I'm an anime geek, a manga geek, and a history nerd, in a fully American-ish High school in Las Vegas, at 15 years of age.
Isn't it amazing? ~D
P.S. Back in Thailand, in my home city Bangkok in a supposedly underdeveloped country why do I find much more of these Japanese good stuffs than in Vegas? Oh well...
