I will conjecture an explanation for it:

Being a good guitarrist means he can play the instrument with skill, not necesarily create good music(i mean, written music).

So, it might be valid to find the guitarist from the musician, because it could be a distinction between execution and creation-If you rush me, i would even compare this with obeying and commanding-. Its not that strange to find good executers that are not so good at creating.

Betito got it. There are plenty of excellent guitarists who arent so great at writing and organizing new material - Stevie Ray Vauhagn comes to mind.

Page produced much of Led Zeppelin's work as well as played the amazing guitar solos and such.

Maybe musician wasnt the right word.. composer? producer? ~:confused:
