Re: What other games do you play?
@Doug Thomson - thanks for the advice on XP. I've been thinking about upgrading my PC and asking myself whether I should purchase XP at the same time. I will probably do so now after your little bit of encouragement.
Oh, thanks too for the recommendations on "Mafia". I saw that in the bargain bin only yesterday for $9.95 and almost bought it, but I thought I'd read up on it on the net first. Yep, these days I've become so stingy I even have to read reviews of budget titles before I buy ~;)
Re: What other games do you play?
Peoples General is based around a WW3 scenario - UK, US, Ruskies against China.
And you're right, getting your core units through a campaign is fantastic, when by the end you have these uber-veterans, with full overstrength. I'm already growing fond of my Ju-87B with All Weather Attack and 12 strength and I still haven't taken France! :charge:
And Simon Appleton is one of the most mature, knowledgable people on this forum. He's been playing strategy games since the year dot

No need to fear XP and old PC game compatabilities when you install XP_Fix.exe, here's the link.
Apart from TW games, I prefer other strategy and FPS titles. Half-Life 2 IMO is superb, the ragdoll physics engine is truly unique, and has revolutionized the way future FPS will be developed. It was well worth the wait, the only flaw Half-Life 2 has is its poor storyline. Compare it back to the original Half-Life's storyline and you'll see what I mean.
Used to play Counter Strike: Source which shipped with HL2, but my poor frames-per-second rate put me off. Also Counter Strike before that.
Played the first 2 games in the AoE series, Age of Empires and AoE II: The Age of Kings (with the Conquerors Expansion). AoE 2 was well supported online through MSN Gaming Zone, and the random maps always made it a fresh challenge. Also, the number of different gaming types kept it interesting.
Anyone still play DOOM? The game set the benchmark for the FPS genre, and the playability is highly addictive. How many FPS these days let you run a chainsaw through endless streams of twisted monsters and freaks, or let you go beserk and literally punch your enemies to shreds? ~D
Also played several games form the Unreal series, including Unreal, Unreal Tournament (aka Classic UT, UT 99) and Unreal Tournament 2004. By introducing vehichles to FPS gameplay, UT2004 has completely re-invented itself, and has now opened up all sorts of mods and new gameplay types. Looking forward to the release of UT2007 and its new physics engine tbh ~D
Re: What other games do you play?
Tried People's General but it got not only very complicated compared to Scorched Earth, but I found the music to be highly annoying and the combat to be all too destructive. Scorched Earth was perhaps unbalanced, but People's General is a dead certain way for you to lose all your experienced troops which become more and more important.
I managed to get to Stalingrad as China then I got fed up with just feeding the Mongolians and North Koreans to the grinder as the only way to save my experts.
I basically use my time playing:
Silent Hunter III... Custom modded.
Mount & Blade
Homeworld 2: Warlords: Star Wars (for the fun of building Star Destroyers)
And of course Battlefield II
Re: What other games do you play?
I play Panzerblitz/PanzerLeader by mail and e-mail ~ and love to play
Close Combat on the computer (both A Bridge Too Far and Battle of the
Bulge) ~D I still play MTW and occaisionally get in some Civilization Conquest.
Re: What other games do you play?
Right now I am playing Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 with Yuri's Revenge expansion. I've had the game since the beginning and it never gets old.
I play Silent Hunter III off and on. Had that since patch 1.2. I'm starting to get tired of it again. It is a great game, though.
When the new patch is released, I will probably start playing Dangerous Waters again. That game is awesome. Very technical.
And Super Mario Bros. 3 for Game Boy Adavnce. Still have it for the original NES. Those were the days.~D
Re: What other games do you play?
as of late I'm playing a lot of Paradox games, and that's about it. Having great fun in Eu2, I've played most nations by now ~
Re: What other games do you play?
Play? Do I remember what that means? ~:)
I only get a bit of free time on weekends, and I just beat HOI2 as Republican Spain. (It was lots of fun BTW, first won the civil war, then Annexed Portugal, Italy Vichy and Germany, then Colombia, Peru and Ecuador and all the central american states and then USSR, which was a bit of an effort but at that point they couldn't really stop me...)
I'm looking at a good Vicky campaign over Christmas and maybe finally giving COD2 a go, as it has been sitting on my shelf for 2 weeks...
I play Max Payne 2, RTWBI, Chessmaster10, Legion Arena (getting tired of it though) and Kotor II on and off(trying out some stuff I haven't tried before, like switching alignment in the middle of the game or getting a "Dirty Harry" style jedy with a gun, etc...).
Re: What other games do you play?
Right now am I playing UEFA manager 2000. Ah, the nostalgic value. ~

I would HIGHLY recommend it. I love the way it changes the game. Having a third faction available to play in skirmish mode (and online) is pretty cool. Yuri's army has some pretty zany units.~
Re: What other games do you play?
Morrowind and M:TW, but neither as often as I'd like. Currently trying out some demos off the latest PCGamer disc, such as Call of Duty 2 and Legion Arena. Oh, and the occasional round of TimeSplitters Future Perfect against friends when I've got some hours free during lessons.

That was one of my all-time favourites. You can't help but have fun blasting reapers to pieces with your Millenium Mortar or tricking your own mecc partners to go swimming to death. :san_laugh:
For me? My gaming life is currently horrible--in fact, on hiatus--because my computer sucks big time. Not the speed and such (I have enough older games to play, hey--besides, gameplay before graphics anytime) but the stability. One of these days I might be kicking at it from dust til dawn just to get it to work properly without formatting my HD everyday or two. :san_embarassed:
Of course, as a high school student I cannot just go out and buy a new computer on my own, so I'm stuck with this one. :san_undecided:
But I have Morrowind, RTW, GTA3, and a few others as my new titles which I love all of them. For Morrowind I bought the GoTY edition which is magnificent. When Oblivion comes out I swear I'll get a new PC and set this one on fire out of spite. GAH! (Though I won't buy Oblivion immediately, ha! Bethesda's games often need months of patching before full enjoyment--and months of modding, too. Rather, I'll get the magnificent (the demo is a testament) UT2004 at first notice.)
My ancient stack include something as far as Commandos 2, Zeus and Zeus&Poseidon, Heroes IV, Stronghold, and Disciples II.
Edit: Love the Christmas smilies.
Re: What other games do you play?
Strange thing is that I don't actually play RTW any more because I find it too easy and thus very, very dull. I play Battlefield 1942 Forgotten Hope, Europa Universalis 2, Hearts of Iron 2, Combat Mission, Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights, Dawn of War and City of Heroes fairly regularly, they all have great replay value. I am also currently playing Farenheit.
