Is it just me, or is critizing a mod a really dumb thing to do? Not saying that anyone's dumb, but it just seems that the risks outweigh the rewards.

Not really, as long as you don't make anything up. At least, it's ok on the Org, as long as you don't do it to offend, but rather out of real concern for the wellbeing of the forums. I openly have criticized moderators in the past, and seriously, I respect most of them but I just disagree with some of their judgements that's all. It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

(2) I think it is important to criticize the mods if you think that an action was unfair. I am grateful that such criticism is taken and perhaps even considered.

Why? This place isn't a democracy, but it's never come across to me as a place for tendentious and vindictive moderation. If it was, Devastating Dave and Idaho would be mods, and I never would've been attracted to this place.

Quite frankly, the reason I posted this is that a lot of the replies were just along the lines of "Yeah, burn him - he's biased" without actually adding any real points.

I have seen quite a bunch of patrons in the Backroom implying from the very start that Soly would be biased and abuse his moderating powers to push some political agenda.

So, Prole while I think that this thread has been started with honorable intentions and is exactly what the "Backroom-Watchtower" has been created for, some responses rather remind me of a witch-hunt and rabble-rousing than of constructive criticism - thus my comment.

Personally, I didn't care too muh about the 'banstick is ready' message closed thread. A bit of over-active modding, perhaps, and the banstick part seemed unnecessarily hostile, but not that bad.

And the part about him telling Kaiser he'd be banned on other forums for 'over the top falsities' about affirmitive action, when what Kaiser wrote was factual, was worse, especially since he seemed to be saying that he'd ban Kaiser if he could. A rather partial use of words by someone who is a mod.

But what really tipped the bucket, so to speak, was his most recent thread, where he appears to concede a point (forced upon him using one of his methods) and in the same breath bring up the old line about people arguing on the internet being retards even if they win. Since the whole point of the backroom is to try and respectfully debate each other on issues, I find it somewhat absurd that a mod would come and call us all-not just one person, but all of us, since we are all debating and arguing-retards.
It is hard to retain the ambience of respect and dignified debate when a moderater comes out with a schoolyard insult that impugns all the members there after he loses a minor point.

Clegane, I respect you, you know that man, but I have to say you're wrong on that account. Everything I said I backed up with facts, and the fact that Soly discounts facts simply because he disagrees with them and, on top of that, says that I deserve to be banned for pointing out said facts, is kind of like an Activist Supreme Court Judge. They suck.

It's not as if he could even disprove it, he effectivly tried to make me shut up with the threat of a ban.

Then the whole Special Olympics issue, Soly's just acting like a Incompatible language.

Maybe I'm spoiled by Papaweio and Ser Clegane, but I expect a certain amount of maturity and intelligence from moderators. Not to mention objectivity. That´s not immature and it´s not an insult. It is an explanation why someone does not continue a discussion. The discussion in which he said that was pointless and not going on discussing it was a sensible and mature thing to do.

As you are familiar with the tags you are probably also familiar with the fact that the insults are still readable if one decides to do so (just as with the spoiler tags).

I'd like to note that this is the second time in this thread that you resorted to name-calling to directly insult a member of this board.

Personally I consider this to be a blatant violation of our forum rules, no matter whether this member is a moderator or a "regular" patron.

Yeah, sometimes, Soly is acting like a child. But it's everyone's life. If they make stupid jokes, take them as jokes, not as an insult.
