'Savages' are not always historically stupid.
The people might very well be aware that it is foreign contact that is killing them. Or at least beleive it is, and then being right in that assumption.

Yes, the website that R' as al Ghul links to provides some support for that idea. It says that "lost tribes" invariably turn out to be "hiding" tribes. For some reason, it sees this tribe as rather different but I'm not so sure.
