I use the unit on the bridge in both vanilla and BI.
When you say a V-shape, is the point of the V pointing towards the bridge or away from it?

Away. This way the enemy units have to choose which one to confront/ react to while the other keeps stabbing them in the back andf side.

I always use a v or a box of good infantry at the mouth of the bridge with missile troops at either side. keep your general just behind them to keep morale up and watch the troops sparkle as they gain experience. phalanx is best but any good infantry will do.
