Funny opponent, to actually try to take on a Spartan hoplite unit guarding a bridge with cavalry.
BTW, how do the Berbers even finance such a large army with their constant hostility towards Rome and 2 poor provinces?

Hi
RTW V1.5 No Mods.
Brutii just been outlawed by SPQR and the Julii dared to declare war.
These are from the Brutii assault on Julii Segesta in the winter of 250 BC
Barbarian mercenary cavalry orders were to flank the Julii army and cause havoc in the Julii rear. Ballistae artillery was the prime target. Attack went perfectly.

Killed the crew and went on to rout a dog handler unit.
One set of dogs is bad enough. Two sets would kill the Barbarian Cavalry for sure. The survivors beat a retreat for the safety of the Brutii lines up on the hill. Dogs chasing after.

Come on then dogs.

Dogs will cause a few casualties.
Some time later..9 screenshots later..this shot made me laugh.

wardogs and mercenaries interesting choice of units
How'd they get on their heads like that? Odd...
You pause it at exactly the time they all fell over? :idea2:
I have never charged velites before or at least very rarely. That was not a particulary powerful cavalry unit but it just demolished those light troops. Yes...standing on heads...head in sand?..just paused at the right instant as they were bowled over by the charge.
You managed to get outlawed already but you're still using equites?
The barbs scare the Romans while the cavalry persuade them to leave.
I am using
- Barbarian Mercenaries because I have the cash and hiring them prevents the Gaul having them. Can gets loads in this area of the world.
- Archers to kill from a distance. Patavium and Sparta produce these.
- Equites because thats all I can build.
Only Thessolonica can build the next Cavalry unit up, Cavalry Auxilla and they mostly go east.
I was building a force to fight Gaul and Equites are fine for that..especially experienced ones. Expect my campaign to finish before I can build any other type of unit.

It was the AI who was using lots of Dogs in that battle. Its army was mostly Hastati and Dogs. I didnt have a single dog unit although I like one or two normally. Above is a novice Equite in position and about to race in from the flank to kill dog handlers and provoke more dogs into action. The main value of this attack was it disorganised the main Julii battle line as some infantry units broke ranks.
I to think Barbarians with a war cry intimidate the enemy. The main infantry clash in that battle was preceeded by 4 Barbarian units letting off a war cry before charging.

These exhausted Julii routed quickly.
If you're rich you might as well disband the almost-useless Barbarian mercs and get some Roman Infantry, some of the most powerful in the game. The Romans kill more quickly and demoralise with their pila volleys. They're also far more disciplined, and keeping your cash down keeps your family members from gaining unwanted traits such as 'Gourmet of Life' or 'Flexible'.
All true Tiberius. I have Principles now under construction in the only city that can build them..Thessolonica (again). A stream of Principles with some Hastati are making their way across Greece to Appolonia and the ferry that awaits them to Tarentum. The army that goes against Scipii will have more Roman infantry than the one above.
Barbarians with +8 (or is it +10) from the war cry are good enough for short sharp fights against low end tired Romans. I am not going to wait several turns to build my army...as thats exactly what the Romans will also be doing.
Change of theatre: Antioch

My first ever RTW fight against Egyptians ends well. They had beseiged my city and I sallied forth. Well sort of sallied forth.
I made my Thracian mercenaries stand in the door way so it was open and fired Scorpion bolts through the open door. When it ran out of ammo I put that same crew, better experience, onto the other Scorpion and used its ammo up. Got 78 Egyptians with the Scorpions (+3 Thracians in friendly fire)
With all my missile troops on the walls I sent cavalry units out to run along outside the walls. Egyptian chariots, cavalry, skirmishers and infantry all responded at one time or another and surged forward. As they did they came into range and were killed by shots from my troops and the wall towers. 743 kills before the Egyptians retreated from the battlefield. 534 kills were by my troops, 209 kills were by the wall towers.
Edit: Same turn and in the next city east of Antioch, in Hatra, the Seleucids would be wiped out. So would most of these Eastern Infantry I had fighting for me.

These spearmen were not good enough to stand up to the Selucid king. 93 would fall in this battle before Roman cavalry sort out the King.
I have officially started my Brutii campaign. ~:)
I've had some good battles recently. Here is what I have so far:
https://usera.imagecave.com/Gaulgath...ampaign258.PNG
I recently had a great victory against the Gauls when they seiged Salona. They assaulted it, and outnubered me 2:5 (I think...) however, they consisted mainly of warbands. I placed all of men in the center, and I had a five star general I believe. The Gauls quickly bashed down the gate, and invaded with all of their troops. My town watch held firm, and soon a chain rout started, and I butchered the Gauls as they ran down the streets. What fun that was! :laugh4:
Sounds good, Gaulgath! Interesting how the Gauls can get all the way to Salona.
Severous: that is why it's always a bad idea to use Eastern Infantry or Barbarian Mercenaries: they're weak, expensive and rout easily.
They tend to be struggeling with Macedon in my campaigns. ~:) (Macedon usually have expanded a bit upwards, behind the Baltics)Quote:

Force them to attack the Julii by declaring war. This prevents them from getting too strong.
Uh oh, my campaign isn't doing too well. I lost Salona AND Apolliana by a greek force that greatly outnumbered us. Luckily the AI is too stupid to cross the ocean and attack our capital. :laugh4:
Yea, he wasnt the brightest guy i have ever played against.Quote:
