Not that the "zipper scenario" is not without merit - albeit a wild one, but it will probably be a slow prolonged and aggonizing demise.
It will be with a whimper and not a bang. Even if it were a bang that initiates it.
Thing is, we do have global warming. On top of that, reduced sunlight caused by the same matter that is keeping the heat in. In one sense it is a good thing, because the greenhouse effect would already be out of control - but on the other it reduces the evaporation rate of water and has been shown to have moved the normal meridian flow of winds (current patterns). The theory "Dimming of the Sun" has been kicked about for some time, though largely ignored because it was impossible to measure .... until 9/11/01.
We all recognize the date. Because of the grounding of all commercial aircraft (as reported by PBS-NOVA) for three days (four) it permitted scientists to take readings that previously (due to contrails) were denied. Question, did you know that the US Agriculture Dept. has data concerning evaporation dating back 170 years? Even before there was one. What 9/13/01 showed was that the affects of contrails is significant to the amount of sunlight allowed to reach the planet's surface and that it is the chemical reaction caused by sunlight (more than the heat actually generated) that causes an increase in evaporation.
Evaporation seems a silly, insignificant thing - until one considers all the imbalances a lower evaporation rate can cause. That and the amount of micro-debre in the air that allows for moisture to stay in the "air" longer without falling to earth ..... where it normally would. That combined with the greenhouse effects have moved the meridian current patterns - causing draughts in some ares and permitting floods in areas that hadn't seen one in centuries.
Had a slew of notes on this - may have given them away. But, look up "Dimming of the Sun" at PBS.com and you will be rewarded. I'm sure.
As for the bang ..... the USA has the nucular (as Bush would put it) capacity to destroy the world 20 times (or is it 100?). Hope that gives you the warm fuzzies about an administration that is (by informed sources) considering using "the bomb" as a tactical weapon on Iran. Unless Iran's leaders bend down and kiss our ring.

No that's rather unlikely. When the zaarg eventualy reappears, they will be outnumbered by humans. And even though the average zaarg is worth a hundred men in combat, they cannot by far match todays human technology. We will have gotten even further when the time comes.
