Re: Star Wars vs. Star Trek
Star Wars is cowboys and injuns in space, pure opera. Star Trek at least makes a stab at possible future technology. Remember the plasma flat tellys that Kirk had? Now they are everywhere. Also the 'communicators', now flip top mobiles, just not held up to the ear. Also the 'impulse' drive is based on the Ion drive.
Anyway Star Trek has better babes :2thumbsup: and Spock. Who can compete with Spock? Even when some alien pinched his brain! :sweatdrop:

Re: Star Wars vs. Star Trek
meh ion drives are just an extension of current technology, now warp drives, they're something spectacular.
Also, I suspect the reason we're seeing so much star trek technology in real life is that a lot of trekkies got into product development / engineering. Life imitating 'art'.
Still, I want a damn lightsaber !

Re: Star Wars vs. Star Trek
Star Wars ... it is more fantasy than science fiction. Plus, it has lightsabers.
Star Trek I can watch, but I only liked DS9, and I prefer my Original Trilogy SW anyway.

Re: Star Wars vs. Star Trek
Never watched Star Trek, never planned to.
I just watch Star Wars for the sabre fights

On another note I am also keen on Star Wars but I just preferred Star trek.
DS9 is my favourite series. The other series seemed to focus to much on the old theme discover alien entity/new race, get into trouble, get saved at the very last moment and learn an important lesson. Aside from that it got boring, it was also conceptually flawed- if ships ran into such misadventures that often, shouldn't Starfleet have a loss rate of over 80% per year?
The political intrigues of Cardassia and the Dominion war kept DS9 interesting. Cardassians are my favourite fictional race in any series I've seen, wich isn't many though.

Re: Star Wars vs. Star Trek
Meh. Star Wars is ok, well excluding the first trilogy. Star Trek I don't watch, BUT I HATE TREKKIES!

Just a bit of science fiction reading, say Asimov and Heinlein and you will see that a lot of these ideas have been around for a longtime.
Movies there is plenty that predate Star Trek, Flash Gordon has already been mentioned.
TV... well even Doctor Who predates Star Trek.

Re: Star Wars vs. Star Trek
I voted Gah because I loved Space Precinct, a show that had about one series and then disappeared from the world... I still have all the toys in their original wrappings...(ebay in 50 years maybe?)

Re: Star Wars vs. Star Trek
Star Wars off course. But only the old epizodes, not new (especially Epizode I which is terrible).

Com on, they were great, as long as you ignore the bad acting, stupid characters and poor story.

Only story how Republic transformed into Empire is good in the new epizodes. Everything else sucks!
Spectacular effects can't supersede bad acting and boring story.

Gah- I have heard of Star Wars. I have never seen either. They sound sci-fi which is not my favorite genre.

Shouldn’t knock it until you try it. I don’t know anyone that did not enjoy the first one (a new hope) after watching it. even if it wasn’t their cup o tea.

It was truely a tragically missed moment.

For now I think I'll stick to Firefly for my space fix.
Tragically short-lived, but otherwise fantastic.

Yes, I thought Palpatine was the most interesting character in the new episodes - especially, the first two when he was rather understated. They did rather ham him up with special effects in the last one. But even so the way he played Anakin for a fool was impressively evil (playing on his fears; suggesting a cure for mortality but never actually lying about it; alternately appealing to Anakin's ambition, pique, love, rage, pity etc; and then at the end delighting in the irony of Anakin bringing about the one thing he had feared all along) .
Actually, I liked pretty much the whole of the last episode - Anakin and Amidala were mind-numbingly inane, but that aside the dark mood of the fall of the Republic was well done and in some way vindicated the upbeat tone of most of the original three movies.
