In multiplayer, the only info that goes between the machines in a battle are the commands issued by the players. All the calculations that occur during a battle are made on each machine independently, and those calculations have to give exactly the same result on each machine otherwise the battle desyncs. Apparently under some battle conditions, Athlon XP's are giving a different result than Pentium's. For instance, a man might die on your machine but not on the other machines in the battle because an arrow had a slightly different trajectory, so you will go out of sync and be dropped from the battle. If the game doesn't drop you then you can play on, but you will not be seeing the same battle as everyone else in the game and it will progressively diverge until it's nothing remotely like what the other players are seeing. This isn't an issue for SP because there is only one machine involved.
