Actually he showed up a turn later, on Ajaccio... his last province now. I had to sail my diplomat over there to keep up the bribery. So far, nobody else has shown up on the island, so maybe the AI doesn't know he's over there. It will be interesting to see if Sicily comes knocking on his door.

Its acutually surprisingly easy task to undertake (killing the pope). If your the HRE your land is right in the middle of the catholic countries therfore invading them and killing their cardinals is actually quite an easy task to undertake.
