It's not necessarily a waste, some units can upgrade to advanced plate.

Sorry, only three units (other than the disabled late bodyguards) can upgrade to advanced plate:

Italian MAA
Famiglia Ducale
Broken Lances

So if you don't play Italians then forget it.

Glad I read this, I was about to put some serious cash out at a couple of castles to build these armories.
