Well, of the successor states Makedonia got the tradition, Arche Seleukia cool units, Baktria a nice eastern touch and Ptolemies .... the rest. ~D
And who wants to play as a faction with an eagle as emblem anyway....
*takes cover*
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
I really like Ptolemies Thureophoroi and their Agema are pretty deadly too.
but yeah those two factions are hard faction to play because of their size but if you work on your economy and bolster your defences where needed. ( Mazaka, Zadrakata, Antiocheia-Margiane. Charax, Damaskos. For AS) You can really become a powerhouse fast. But I 've been a hardcore roman ever since the game came out. And EB Made me want to try all the other great factions. So thanks:2thumbsup:
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
Roman 240BC. Epirote 250 BC KH 241 BC and ive just started a Carthage one
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
I do a lot fo short campaigns...it is very rare that I stick to just one for very long. This is for 0.8 only, btw.
Koinon Hellenon- Did great with them on 0.74. But I was fool-hardy and lost Athens. Sparta followed. Yeah...I rolled over like the 0.74 KH...that hurt my pride a lot.
Sauromatae- I decided to play them because some had complained they were impossible. They're not. I steamrolled the Greek settlements to my south using careful HA tactics. Accrued something like 60,000 mnai of debt, but made my way out of it, but I had major problems with revolts. Should've exterminated Tanais and Olbia:wall: Hell of a lot of fun though! I'll definitely try them again at some point!
Epeiros- The "e" is for "epic." I hung on to Taras and marched on Pella and then Demetrias. Had a number of huge battles with the Maks, but the most challenging were definitely in defense of Taras. 4 major battles, all within the span of 2 and half years or so. Fighting Triarii is pure hell, but I managed to stave them off all four times(with heavy casualties on both sides each and every time), though in the final battle Helenos died in combat when he was pinned behind a triarii by leves and the Roman general(who also wouldn't survive the battle! think was it was Cotta). I was able to secure peace for SPQR after that, though it was quite expensive and short-lived. Left off in 261 or so, building an army to march on the Koinon and the Antigonids in Korinthos.
Arverni- Had at least a dozen battles with the Aedui in the span of the first four years or so before finally evicting them from Gaul proper, leaving them with only Mediolanum in Transalpine Gaul. They have since captured Massilia and the Romans took Segesta. So I'm just going to unify the rest of Gaul and leave them for last, in hopes that they'll provide a useful buffer against Roman aggression. Then I'll mass my armies and storm Transalpine Gaul as well as Italia. Currently playing.
Pontos- Of course I played them! Didn't play my cards well and was betrayed by the Seleukids around 263 or so, just as my economy was completing its recovery. I managed to turn the tide against them anyways, evicting them from Anatolia and capturing Mazaka. However, a few years later, they showed up on my doorstep with about three full stacks from the east of elite troops. Pontos just didn't have the recruitment to deal with that yet...
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
Getai so far, but I'll get around to others, eventually.
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
I have played an Arche Selucia campign and a Casse one, but I only voted for Arche Selucia - I didn't realise it was multiple choice :embarassed:
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
Played as Casse, my first choice and I've recently started up again after my victory. Had the Romans get chewed up by the Epierotes and currently trying to wage a three front war against them, the Sweboz who've built a nice, and fairly large, germanic-baltic empire, and the Quarthadastim who're currently trying to face ten-thousand blue painted kelts marching across the Iberian peninsula.
Also played with the Lusitannan where I united the peninsula within fifteen years, then played for another twenty or so before I lost interest at the time.
The Getai have also recieved attention, their elite archers kick considerable ass. Stopped playing soon after the Romani betrayed me and then lost Illyria.
The Aedui were my second choice to play, and I only stopped when the five front war I was involved in got tedious. Haven't made it to the first reforms with them as yet either, though with four units of Gasetae massed on one flank you don't need all that much else.
The Koinon was a welcome break from the barescrapped coffers of just about all the others apart from the Getai, got rich enough to support the Aedui with fifteen thousand a turn without it keeping my workmen from having to constantly build extra strongrooms to house all the gold and silver. With all the mines around the agean it got slightly out of hand since I was also able to pay a million mnai to bribe a gallic settlemnt and then hand it to the Aedui, and still it wasn't causing me to have anything like a cash deficiancy.
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
I really haven't played an extensive campaign with anyone yet, but I can tell you that the first faction I would really love to play as are the Saka. They remind me very strongly of the Armenians and Parthians of vanilla Rome, and I loved them very much. I'm waiting on further updates to the faction, then I plan to play as them a whole lot. :2thumbsup:
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
Well I wouldnt want to play as the ptolemoi. Other faction are surounded by enemies while Egypt only takes down seluekia.
Unless they have a real goal (other then the Arche) or something to make the game exciting, (like the casse conquoring the brythonnic isles) they'll just have one goal. :egypt:
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
All Greeks have at least 5 competitors to take care off, though these involve allied factions you need to get rid of as well. The Ptolemaioi for example will have to fight:
-Makedonia
-Koinon Hellenon
-Arche Seleukia
-Pontos
-Epeiros
-Saba
EDIT: Though I must partially agree with Bavarian Barbarian that the Ptolemaio don't look that exiting to play with... I must also say that their factional units aren't that bad; and in fact are just nice when you've seen the more conventional 'elite' and 'medium' Greeks (aka Thorakitai and Hypaspistai) - I mean those are good(looking) as well but tend to get a bit repetetive, Galatians and Ethiopians on the other hand...

Yea they have to fight them at some point, but not for a long time. It's basicly just the Seleucids, and once you've beaten them, you can steamroll the rest easy.
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
Pontos very briefly (10 years give or take). It seems an awful lot of fun (although I was surprised the AS didn't attack me at all...), but I will wait 0.81 before I commit to along campaign, as many factions are incomplete atm and Pontos among them.

Well, Conquering Egypt is so fun, why would you start with it ? :beam:
Actually Egypt/ptolemaioi is one of the reason I was interested in mods.
The RTW vanilla Egypt was so terribly inaccurate ..... :furious3:
A real pain in the neck (the Germanic phalanx was another one ...... ). I never played those factions in the vanilla game because of that and yet I would have loved to. That was just too much.
As for now, I play Getai (I like thracians, don't know if it's the 'phrygian' caps or the scythe-like weapons ...)
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
I've tried several factions just for practice, I'm debating whether to play Roma or the Seleukids for my first .81 campaign. Its actually quite fun messing around with history on a non-serious campaign. (Such as my Casse campaign where I am sending a fleet carrying a full stack to conquer India, just so I can recruit elephants for the war back in Britain:juggle2: ).
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
I wouldn't amagine that Casse would get elephants. Not even the Romans can get Indian elephants.
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
You wonder whether Vanilla's Mummy Returns Egypt was the result of a total blithe lack of research, or a desire to cut back on history in favor of having a faction setup most history-illiterate gamers could still identify and quantify.
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
Supposedly, CA has stated that the designers preferred to have them in cartoon egyptian style, considering it more "fun" or somesuch than to have them in a more realistic hellenic style. Which tells you much about their mindset. The sad thing is that EB has shown that you can have a far more historically correct game and make it more varied and interesting and even more beautiful than the cartoony populist style used in the base game. I had a faint hope that it would actually inspire them to make MTW2 more realistic, but while it is not as outlandish as vanilla RTW was, it still falls far short of the mark. A crying shame.

Oh, you`re wrong there buddy.
That`s not the sad part.
The sad part is that we couldn`t get past vainilla trauma and try EB egyptians... look at their votes, compare them with Arche Seleukeia or Epeiros...
Or perhaps, we too can`t erase the image of egyptians that we learnt in comic books and in prep-history class... and we incounciously expect it to see it on a game... ~:(
That would be sad...
Re: What factions have you played 0.8 campaigns as?
Sweboz - This has always been my favourite faction. It's the first one I tried in EB, and faithfully also the one I first played in 0.8. Love it - their generals are true badass butchers.
Arverni - The second one I played, and through them I've learned to despise the Aedui. Kill them, kill them all and do it quickly. They don't deserve to play on. I liked it aswell.
Romani - A little easier this one. Didn't enjoy it as much as the "barbarian" factions (as I usually prefer to DESTROY Rome rather than fight for her :laugh4:) but it was fun too. I'm thinking of starting a new campaign as them, roleplay my generals a little more and applying a few homemade ironman rules.
Casse - I'd love to play as them in a more lengthy campaign, but those pesky rebels are too strong for me. I've made several attempts, using different tactics, but they always wipe me out. Bah. And I who got a thing for their Kluddobro... :shame:
When I voted I forgot to add that I've played as Getai too. They were a lot of fun to play as, but I unfortunately got a CTD and gave up on it. Enjoyed it a lot up until that, though.
