The best thing you can/should do is completely uninstall the game. If you can do it also, AFTER you've uninstalled, I'd go in and delete the remaining files, because there's probably going to be some residual stuff left over.
Say you installed the game to C:\Medieval II Total War\. Uninstall the game, then after that is done, odds are that directory is going to remain with some stuff in it. Just delete it.
Then, do a fresh install, and install the v1.2 patch over that fresh install. FAIR WARNING! It's going to take you probably an hour or two to install, patch, and then extract all the files using the unpacker (last step optional).

Wow! I dunno what's up with your computer there Whacker. I've got a AMD 3000+ that I OC'd to 2.3 GHz, 1 GB of ram (hell if I remember the stats anymore, just remember it's 2x 512 MB in dual channel mode), and an ATA hard drive (same 7200 rpm). It couldn't have even taken me 15 minutes to patch, probably more like 10. I'm certain the wipe, reinstall, and subsequent patching was all completed in under 30 min. I wonder what the difference is...

I understand that and am close to saying forget it. But I still want to try it.
