Gah no hair bands. Great white yuk.Quote:
what about some of the better hair metal from the '80s...Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and such, Pour some Sugar on me is such a cool song.
No mention yet of the Kinks the fathers of Punk.
The Kinks the father of punk?:inquisitive:Quote:

Of course UK punk was very different to US/New York punk. Bands like the Pistols, the Clash et al had very little in common with Patti Smith, Tom Verlain, David Byrne etc.
I recall Richard Starkey being asked if he was a mod or a rocker, his reply?
"I'm a mocker". :laugh4:
Nirvana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
I would have thought that they were a bit on the old side for a young whippsnapper.Quote:

Yes and the Who were Mods as well. The two are not mutually exclusive.Quote:

The Who as well can claim to be the fathers of Punk. You better check its roots. I didnt say they were punk bands, The difference is they can actually play their instruments and sing unlike Punks.
Listen to Father Christmas sometime. Listen to the bass lines.
That wasn't a skit, it was too close to the knuckle in some parts around here. :sweatdrop:Quote:

Put it another way. Punk was an attempt to go back to Rock 'n' Roll roots. No guitar solos, no fuzz or wah wah pedals, no prima donna axemen boring you to death with his onanistic fumblings.
Guys like Jerry Lee Lewis would prolly be more appropriate as a progenitor.
Are we disqualifying grunge ?
They can deny it all they likeQuote:

Curses swear by punk rootsQuote:
While they’ve stayed true to their garage-punk roots - think Ramones and Kinks
All you need do is listen to the music and the roots are clear. Again they werent Punk bands but they did inspire the early punkers as i imgine did Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. Iggy pop and the Ramones were the first big real Punk rockers if thats what you driving at. Hey lets not leave out the MC5.
I guess Van Halen would be a "hair band" and thus be disqualified?
I didn't. :wink:Quote:

I see at what your driving at Gawain. Three chord tricks, four members of the band, one lead singer. All that could be seen as 'influencing' punk. To some degree, but only because that's how rock and roll came about after the big band sound. Mainly down to the introduction of amplifiers.Quote:

Take it from me, as a punk from 76. The Who and all those really old guys, (over 30:laugh4: ) were derided and scoffed at.
Under no circumstances mention The Jam. :wall: :whip:
Dont leave out the lyrics.Quote:

Deride them all you like its still where the roots of punk lie. Your a generation to late to have witnessed it. They took political themes and stuff like Dylan wrote and put it to heavy rock. Heck a lot of their songs were banned in England.Quote:

I hadn't forgotten about them. But as this is the frontroom....:sweatdrop:Quote:

LMFAO, I'd forgotten about that.
'New Waves' tended to come around every decade or so. R'n'R in the mid-late fifties. Hippies cica 66-70. (we shall skirt glam rock for the purposes of good music ). Punks 76-80-(present). Then dance music in the late 80s, acid house and all that bollox.
Now we get Simon Cowell. :sweatdrop: :whip:
The Tap.

AC/DC, no question. They might not be the best band, but they are by far the best rockers.
And as an additional bonus, they've made no ballads. I hate rock n' roll bands doing ballads, it's just wrong. Period.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is currently my favourite rock band, albeit that might change later on.
Wrong. Check out Ride On from the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt cheap album. Great song, but I bet they've never played it live!Quote:
