the gesatae or whatever the mercenary equievelent fro masia minor are called.
playing as the haysadan ive found them to be an extremely useful luxury soldier. they are noticably awesome in seiges both atacking and defending.
i am currently partaking in a punitve raid north west of the caspian to punish the sweboz, and i have two gesatae in my raid army. I like the idea of out barabarian-ing the germans!
of course haysadan have several cool units of their own. their various horse archers are extremely effective, but to generic to be a favourite. their generals are truly awesome i have never had one die on the battlefield.
Agarian assualt infantry and Princeps i like they way they look and they do my bidding nicely
I like the sacred band cavalry. I changed their animation to the two handed spear and its always cool to have that shield in front of their shoulder when they charge.
I really like my Xystophoroi Hippeis .
Not particularly "uber" , I guess I like the job(s) I make them do .
The just stand and watch until the time is right , then 2 units of them ( in my hoplite army ) carry out the wonderful task of collapsing a wing / slaughtering the general in a thunderous charge .
Since they are noble cavalry , they never-ever lose more than 3-4 guys per unit ( on large scale ) .
We will not waste carelessly the elite of our city .
I find myself liking more mid-tier ( aka early " elite " ) units , because by the time I can train Spartans ( for example ) I already have some tough-as-nails ( golden ) veteran hoplites for who I care a lot more .
Usually they are stuck together with an old ( also favourite ) dog-of-war general ( I found out that good generals are the selfish ones , cleverness is irrelevant , more important is that they do not regret breaking the famous eggs for the famous omelette ) and they're more precious to me than the city of Rome ( who never really liked me actually ) .
Does anyone else find himself under the charm of the veterans ?
Oh , a veteran KH general can actually take the pain from almost an entire army while the rest of his troops form an outer circle and proceed to slay everything in the circle quickly and efficiently . I discovered that today . Hooray for the war-monger/-master
Satyros
Aspet Hetzelazor, cheap while fairly effective medium cavalry. One of the cornerstones in my Hayasdan armies (the others being missile cav, Kavakaza Sparabara, missile infantry and cataphracts). And they look good.
The Greek Levy / Hellenic Levy / Hellenic Native Phalanx unit:
- it is (relativly) cheap,
- available with MIC2 and
- you have lots of privinces where you can recruit them.
Oh, and the Epirotes, the Macedonians, the KH, Pontos, the AS, the Ptolemaii (sorry, forgot the greek plural) and Baktria field them (at least one variant of it). Maybe the Getai too (but this I do not know for sure).
EDIT: No KH and no Getai, I checked it.
Koinon Hellenon General's Bodyguard, simply because it is the toughest unit EVAR!! They are not the strongest, mind you, but they are most capable at absorbing godly amounts of punishment before they even consider routing.
For the strongest unit, I would want to pick the Cohors Reformata. These over-equipped middle-aged legionnaires kick Selukid asses like no other!
Now for the most valuable unit I would pick the drapanai. This getaic unit is cheap, good in ambushing and have a very high anti-armor attack. They flank and rape immobilized hetairoi like no one else! :2thumbsup:
"Favorite" unit for me is whatever offers best all-round utility. Something durable and something which don't necessarily excel in any area but don't fall short in any either. And finally something that functions well on it's own and don't rely on specific tactics or support troops.
For me this something is the Greek Hoplite, and especially the Spartan one.
They are machines, they just keep going. I've never seen a unit of spartans rout when playing them, and very rarely when playing against them. They are extremely durable, very maneuvarable, does well against both infantry and cavalry and don't fall short when fighting on walls. The best all-round unit in the game, imo atleast. Some units do better than the hoplites in some situations, but then again they get slaughtered in other situations where the hoplites still hold their ground.
2 words....:skull:Thorakitai Argyraspidai:skull:...This unit is the product of combining the genetic code of Jason Voorhees ( Friday The 13th) and Maximus Decimus Meridius.:beam:
spartan hopolites. Have you seen 300?
yes, but here they arent naked.
Nor do they randomly break formation to head into slowmo fighting.
Nor do they have a freakishly weird monster dude following them.
Nor do they have millions of other things.
:shame:
What?! Spartiates don't have the SlowMo attack in EB?Quote:
