In the end, only the violence really proved interesting. The first eleven episodes are more like a dead weight to me, though the episodes before which Saionji Sekai hits the sack with that douche Makoto were more interesting than the rest of the "bloodless" episodes simply because Saionji is the only character in the animu that was actually interesting, to a point, the way she brought the douche and the pretty girl (Katsura, IIRC) together while really wanting Makoto for herself. Later she just joins the emo club and it's just a drag.
But really, other than the early Saionji, the first eleven episodes were a waste of time. Emo whines by girls over some douche which no real girl with half a brain would ever moon over (plus, no real realism concerning their situation; where were the parents?). Only the last episode was awesome, but getting there took too long. So, the series was reasonably good in the end, but only because of the awesome conclusion -- which really didn't need the excuse of a past history to happen, as far as I'm concerned.
