well, i kinda admit, it is a bit funny, but Kallatis, where you can recruit them, was supposedly already built up, so i did that to represen that.
ok, ill be updating soon. i played a lot, so there will be 3 updates. there was supposed to be a large battle in the next update, but i forgot to turn fraps on and i fought the battle- and saved- and didnt even realize that i had no pictures. :wall:
Chapter 7- The Rivals
For as long as anyone can remember, the Agathyrsi tribe, who resided in Sarmiszegethusa, were our biggest rivals. We competed in sports, trade, and in war. We have already had numerous wars, but both ended without result. Oroles per Drobeta was determined to end that, with victory and complete integration of the Agathyrsi tribe.
We decided to ask them once- just once- if they would join our confederation.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...idiptosarm.jpg
But, as we expected, they said no and drove our diplomat away with force. Thus, Oroles per Drobeta had no choice but to bring his army and attack Sarmiszegethusa.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...iegingsarm.jpg
Chapter 8- The battle for Sarmiszegethusa
In the spring of 262, our Vasil assaulted Sarmiszegethusa.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...armassault.jpg
Our two units of Scordisci Infantry pushed the rams to the walls.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ushingrams.jpg
And started the bang away at the walls.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...sramming-1.jpg
During this time, our archers opened fire.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...givinghell.jpg
The enemies fist line of defense, the Drapanai, were almost completely annihilated and driven away.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...naifleeing.jpg
Unlike before, the enemy put their phalanx to guard the plaza.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...anxwaiting.jpg
So the enemies light skirmishers came in.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...sassisting.jpg
But were under fire all the way there.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...msrunnning.jpg
That’s when our Scordisci Infantry stormed in.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...assaulting.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ssaulting2.jpg
During this time, the enemy general decided to turn his back on the carnage, seeing that the situation was hopeless, as of now.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...lbackwards.jpg
On our left flank, another unit of Drapanai engaged our men, but was soon routed.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...naifalling.jpg
When that was happening, our men were very vulnerable, as they were milling about, killing fleeing Drapanai, and Skorillo, the enemy general, decided to turn around to see what was happening, but still didn't do anything. I personally think if he charged right then, we would have been in serious danger.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ralwaiting.jpg
Our Vasil ordered the Scordisci Infantry to assault the plaza- alone. I think he wanted to see how well they could perform.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...rgingalone.jpg
At first, they just encountered six archers, who were cut down, kind of as practice for their blades.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...odpractice.jpg
And finally the enemy general charged our Scordisci Infantry.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...eralcoming.jpg
To assist our men, Oroles sent in the Thraikians.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ianscoming.jpg
Skorillo finally gathered the courage to fight our men himself- and then went crazy.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...alslashing.jpg
But he regained his senses and retreated.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ralfleeing.jpg
Meanwhile, our heavy horse archers were sent in to flank the enemy, seeing that they finished up their arrows.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...4/flanking.jpg
And we charged into the plaza, killing Skorillo.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...neralslain.jpg
Just then, the horse archers slammed into the right side of the phalanx.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...otherescue.jpg
And the surrounding was complete.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...rrounded-1.jpg
Soon, everyone was dead, and there was much celebration.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...elebrating.jpg
I, for one, was shocked at how few men we lost for this town. It seems as if all the fight went out of them after decades of fighting.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../results-1.jpg
And with that, another tribe was united!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...conquering.jpg
Chapter 9- The agreement and the Rebel Problem
After we took Sarmiszegethusa, the Makedonians wanted to make an agreement with us. So we sent our diplomat over, and we decided on one thing.
The towns of Serdike and Tylis will serve as buffer towns. The nation who invades one of those territories will be seen as an act of aggression, and the other nation will declare war on that nation.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...uffertowns.jpg
We agreed, and it was done. No one was to set foot into those provinces. But we did not know if those Makedonians were going to honor it……
Our Vasil also decided on our next target: Ak-Ink, a large trading town north of Singidunum.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...nexttarget.jpg
Meanwhile, Brasos per Rekidava brought his army to deal with some rebels in the northern area of the province Scorcouw. Now, we are having many troubles with rebels, and they keep popping up everywhere. Our Vasil was recently heard in his room cursing them because he just received word a trade convoy was robbed by them. So he sent Brasos per Rekidava with an army to deal with them accordingly. It was to be the first battle of many with rebels.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...starting-1.jpg
As usual, we chose a nice, sunny day to battle on.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ethebattle.jpg
Our horse archers went forward and began to target the enemy archers in devastating volleys of arrows.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...4/HAvolley.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...yunderfire.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...underfire2.jpg
We soon made contact with the remaining enemy forces, which were two units of Thraikian skirmishers.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...tcontact-1.jpg
And soon, the rebel leader was killed.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ptaindeath.jpg
That was followed by the enemy routing, and our cavalry pursuing.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...retreating.jpg
And we soon won, only letting three escape, who were soon hunted down and put in jail.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../results-2.jpg
Then we spotted the main culprit of the rebel operations in our country, the one who has disrupted trade routes and was a dangerous presence in our lands.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../rebelarmy.jpg
So Oroles per Drobeta sent Brasos per Rekidava, now known as the Rebel Killer, turned his army east to take on these rebels.
:laugh4: this is one funny AAR! BTW what is your financial situation?
PS the Getai were actually tall, not dwarfs like the damned Koinon claim
its decent, i guess, some turns i make, some i lose. as for height, ya, i know they were taller, but to make it funnier i kept the dwarf thing.
Nice update, and funny.
What's your overall plan? Conquer Hellas, or are you heading more north and keeping those buffer towns?
i think im going to let the hellenes tear themselves apart first: all of "the big 3" used to have 1 large stack per, but the makedonian one was just torn up by the KH one(only 2-3 units remaining, and they have only a few men in each left!), and i think they are going to head into epirote territory soon. so for now, im uniting the northern tribes...... makes no sense to get myself torn up by sarissas right now- im going to boost my economy so i can churn out Scordiscis and thraikains so i can deal with the sarrissas accordingly. but its going to be hard. now i know why they said "easy beginning but gets harder"
A word to the wise, hooahguy. Don't be tempted by Nikaia(the city right across the Golden Horn from Byzantion). Two reasons: Grey Death and Yellow Fever.
In my Getai campaign I took it around 250 so that my Vasil could get the "Pavel-Ter" trait. Three turns later the Seleucids laid siege. Then no sooner did I beat them off than the Ptolemies showed up with a bone to pick. Then the entire Pontic army arrived on my doorstep with four family members leading the charge. And this is with the difficulty set to M/M. (Curiosity: what is your difficulty set to? I started wondering after you said Kallatis was built up to those high-level MICs.)
So, Nikaia is a magnet for the Successors and unless you want to take them all on at once, be warned.
By the way, it was your AAR which inspired me to start a Getai campaign in the first place, so keep up the good work.:beam:
This is great...I needed a laugh. Keep it up man!
im playing on M/H.
thanks for the advice, Theodotos I.
i plan on taking 3 armies with me to take Nikaia- one of cheap units to garrison it with, and the other 3 to protect it, and i will continually send in reinforcement armies, before moving on. i also plan on sending an insignificant general to recruit a mercenary unit of galatian cavalry, sort of to RP the commander of the galatian wing of my army. i will definitely go on with this, no doubt. wrestling season ends on Feb 18. and we have 2 early dismissals in the next 2 weeks! (in all, we only have another 12 days of practice IF we do have practice on those days which we have early dismissal on- 10 if we dont) we also have 4 more matches, one of them tomorrow, and we leave for the tournament on the 14 of Feb, which is a month from today.
so, thanks for your comments and stay tuned for updates!
EDIT: about the MIC levels, it makes more sense for a town with any sensible leadership to go straight to the highest MIC level immediately, so i looked up the second highest MIC level in the building tree, and used process_cq to get to it, then began to build it (i do this with every campaign- i did it with Baktria too- ya, i know, shameful- but better for RP)
Yeah, just thought you might want a warning. I've lost count of the stacks I've beaten off my porch. And it's getting harder to hold by the turn because the AI sometimes starts another seige before I can even retrain my units. Don't worry about the Macedonian sarissas, Drapanai combined with Gaeroas can handle them easily---sure you'll lose men but you can replace those units for far cheaper than the Macedon Argyraspides and Pezhetairoi. I now own all the way down to Corinth and am starting to think about taking on the KH. They've gotten really depleted in the wars. BTW, I noticed in another thread that you figured the Getai would be able to train Hellenistic troops once you entered southern Hellas. Well, that's only partly true. From what I can see you'll never be able to train any phalanx units other than your two native ones. Thureophoroi, the Hoplites(Haploi and Classical) and the light skirmisher units are the only units I've seen so far.
(And after taking a look at the Recruitment Viewer, I think those are the only one's I'm going to see either).
Thanks for telling me about the barracks. I noticed the same thing in your Baktria AAR and was starting to wonder about both your cash flow and your tech. Figured either I was doing something terribly wrong or else you were fooling around with the files. And I was right!
Hail, Vasil!:2thumbsup:
Lurker comes back again.Anyways, great AAR,you actually manage to combine the um......humour and more serious RP.I will be awaiting new chapter.
Thought I'd come back around and see if your Nikaia strategy had worked out. Saw you hadn't posted anymore updates. In case you've not gone to war with Makedon yet, here's a tip I thought might be useful. The biggest problem I've had with them thus far(and they only have Mytilene left in 219 BC), is their bodyguard cavalry. Those phalanxes are expensive and slow and I find my armies are often just composed of Drapanai, which scatter to the wind under a cavalry charge. So I string Komatai out in front of my line and the Makedonians charge them. When the Komatai retreat, the bodyguards seem to slow down to follow them and they've lost most of their momentum by the time they hit the Drapanai and Rhomphiaphoroi behind. It seems to work pretty well, so I thought you might be interested. Good luck and keep writing.
Chapter 10: Fighting more rebels (or, Oh Joy! More rebels!)
In the Spring of 260, Brasos Per Rekidava attacked the rebels that were causing so much trouble to out trade convoys.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...starting-2.jpg
It was yet another bright, sunny day. Brasos sent all the horse archers to defeat the enemy archers and Drapanai in a hail of death.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ieceofcake.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...sunderfire.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...iunderfire.jpg
After all the arrows were used up, Brasos began to send in troops
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../attacking.jpg
Our men were at first afraid because of the spears, but were soon surprised.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...firstmenin.jpg
The slaughter began……
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...yfaltering.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ondphalanx.jpg
They took heavy casualties, so the Scordiscis were entrusted to hold the line.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...iholdingup.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...y14/bridge.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...protecting.jpg
Meanwhile, an enemy phalanx tried to flee, and was chased by a unit of cavalry.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...14/toofast.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...eeprunning.jpg
When they couldn’t catch them, they turned back and charged.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ginghorses.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...rgingagain.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...14/resting.jpg
In a short while, most of the enemy forces were killed.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../walkalone.jpg
But soon he was dead.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...eraldead-1.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...alonground.jpg
And the day was won!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../results-3.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...14/victory.jpg
EDIT: oops- i just realized i accidentally names Kyros "Kylos", and then "Karlos", its supposed to by Kyros.....:embarassed:
This is SOOOOOOO good. I love the humor its perfect. Im sitting here laughing at my computer and my room mate thinks I am crazy. Keep it up don't stop!
thanks for the comments everyone!:2thumbsup:
next chapter, coming very soon.....
Chapter 11- A Change in Direction
In the spring of 260, our Vasil decided that we wouldn’t head northwest, and take Ak-Ink. We would head northeast, into Skythia, to take the Greco- Skythian town of Olbia.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...uy14/olbia.jpg
There was a profitable port there, and in addition, we would be able to recruit many Skythians, who were rumored to be the best horse archers in the world. Our best generals decided that it would be better to go into Skythia than to attack Ak-Ink. The Skythian horse archers would help us against future foes!
After we took Olbia, we would take the rest of the Bosporus.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...4/bosporus.jpg
But before we could take Olbia, we had to find out more about it.
The garrison was medium sized, but could be deadly if not countered by the correct combination of forces. We also found out a few things about the governor. He was of Skythian origins, but became Hellenized. He was an oppressive ruler, so we decided that there was to be no negotiation- just aggression. We would free the Skythians of Olbia and bring them under the roof of our great Confederation. But we knew he wouldn’t go down without a fight, and not all Skythians hated him. Indeed, the rich ones loved him, so they made up his bodyguard. Anyone else would be fatal for him.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...iagovernor.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...bodyguards.jpg
So as we were gathering information, we were also gathering our forces…….
I like how this AAR is written: explaination (sp?) of future plans, mixed with a good amount of battles (and not only sieges), contextualization of in-game details (like the "background" and the personality of the various generals), and a nice dose of humor that keeps the interest up in the battle screens... many would go unnoticed otherwise :P
Keep up the good work! :2thumbsup:
You know, this is what I love about EB. I took one route in my Getai campaign, you're taking another. And God only knows how many other paths there are. This game has great reply value, though I doubt I'll have the time
Good AAR Hooah :2thumbsup:
Humor, Drama, and Action all put into a good story keep it up Hooah! I hate that infernal song with a passion. Although it used to be my favourite.
P.S.the singing enemy general didn't look anything like this did he? http://www.greenday.net/bjbio.jpg
Great humour, definitely the most funny AAR I ever read!
Keep going
Chapter 12- The Bosporus Campaign, Part 1- Olbia
In preparation for taking Olbia, we made peace with the Sauromatae, who were neighbors with the Olbians.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ewalliance.jpg
After that was set in stone, Brasos per Rekidava besieged Olbia.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ieingolbia.jpg
In the summer of 258, we assaulted.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../assulting.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...starting-3.jpg
Our horse archers opened fire, causing horrendous casualties.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ingvolleys.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...olleydead1.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...olleydead2.jpg
As our Scordisci Infantry moved to the walls, the enemy levy hoplites moved in to resist, but were mercilessly slaughtered.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...unningaway.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...y14/matrix.jpg
After the levy hoplites came some medium cavalry. They too were butchered.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...alrycoming.jpg
Our Scordiscis entered the town, and was promptly charged by the enemy heavy cavalry, and their general. Unfortunately, they could not receive any archer support, since we ran out of arrows.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...nderattack.jpg
Soon they were spread out, and in grave danger of being overran.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../spreadout.jpg
But the Thraikians came and the enemy general retreated, but when we came to the top of the hill, the enemy general attacked again.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ttacking-1.jpg
Soon, Photogenes was killed.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...eraldead-2.jpg
Soon after he died, so did the last of his bodyguard of nobles.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../lastnoble.jpg
There was but one unit of levy skirmishers to defend the plaza. Our Thraikians made short work of them.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../laststand.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...guy14/jaws.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...mscharging.jpg
Until there ware just two left…..
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...alkingaway.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ylaststand.jpg
The town was ours!
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../results-4.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../victory-1.jpg
It was the first, and definitely not the last, town taken during the Bosporus Campaign.
Ha nice..."Maybe if I walk slowly they won't notice..." Great line there. Once again a nice touch. Love the humor
Chapter 13: The Bosporus Campaign- Part 2- The Battle for Taurike Chersonesos
After we took Olbia, Oroles per Drobeta brought his horse archer-heavy army to defeat the rebel armies defending the two Hellenic towns of Chersonesos and Pantikapaion.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ydefending.jpg
His army consisted of many horse archers and many mercenaries, even a few Hellenic ones, for even though Oroles hated Hellenes, he realized they had great tactical advantage. Anyhow, these weren’t true Hellenes- they were trained in Skythia, so they still retained some heritage, even though they were outfitted in a Hellenic fashion.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...14/thearmy.jpg
He went to battle against the first force, guarding Chersonesos.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...starting-4.jpg
There was a giant rock on our left flank, so we positioned the left flank of our phalanxes up against it, and a unit of mercenary hoplites to guard it from any flanking enemies.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...esguarding.jpg
On the far left of the battlefield was a large group of trees. Half of our horse archers hid there, lying in wait for the enemy.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...yinginwait.jpg
As the enemy approached, our archers in the forests let loose in great volleys, smiting many of them.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...derattack1.jpg
Our horse archers on the right flank did the same thing.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...derattack2.jpg
Soon the enemy general came under fire as well.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...lunderfire.jpg
Seeing that the enemy general and his Skythian nobles were making a beeline towards our horse archers, Oroles sent our own Skythian nobles to counter them, using our archers as covering fire. Leading the enemy cavalry formation was the enemy general himself, and he was one of the first to die.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...4/charging.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...aptaindead.jpg
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...ptaindead2.jpg
As we were engaging their cavalry, and driving the last few off, the enemy spearmen came.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...enengaging.jpg
Soon, the entire enemy army was routing, and we began to chase them down.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/...hasingdown.jpg
And the day was won.
https://i199.photobucket.com/albums/.../results-5.jpg
Even as they were doing that, Oroles went to survey the carnage. There were arrows all over the ground, on both sides, but mostly on their side. We saw many young men impaled by arrows, as we passed by, we heard the occasional crunch of our horses hooves crushing some unfortunate enemy soldiers bones, the screams of the wounded, and we saw some of the mercenary Skythians in our service looting the bodies. Oroles dismounted and so did a handful of us, including me. The rest stayed on the horses and followed. He walked over to an enemy archer dead on the ground. He could not have been but 13 years of age, and here he was, dead on the ground. Behold, there were seven arrows in him, three of them were in his face. With a tear, Oroles told us to dig a grave for him. We did, interred the dead archer into the ground and covered him up. We passed more bodies, and about that time, the stench of the corpses of the men and horses began to affect us, so we walked back to the horses, mounted, and left. The scenes from that day would be etched in my mind for years to come.
It was a sobering experience for all of us.
