In Oblivion, I went into this cave, which was has a bright blue glow and a fog. Moving along the cave, I hear awfully bone chilling hisses, and then later on a Wraith (or whatever those monsters in Oblivion are called that look alike the LOTR Wraiths) shows up right behind me, up in my face. Really shocked me.
Oblivion would have great potential to be a horror/RPG game.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Oblivion is as much of a Horror RPG as My Little Pony is an Action Adventure game.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Oh man, lots of things come to mind here.
Alone in the Dark - The original DOS game. 'nuff said.
Darkseed - It'd be a joke today, but back then it was rather surreal, and I've always been a fan of H.R. Giger's stuff.
Resident Evil 2 - PS1 game. We didn't play RE1, we started with two, and it was pretty freaky.
Doom1 - Yeah, this was also suspenseful back in the day, rounding a corner with a 'deaf' monster that only activates on sight was always good for a jump or two.
Undying - Oh man. THIS is a game worthy of that title. It was suspenseful, well executed, creepy, and wierd. I remember jumping out of my chair (physically all the way) more than once, AND my entire body having cold shivers and my skin crawling at some of the scrye events. The last bit of the game was on the lame side, but the levels inside the house and Elizabeth's levels in the ruins were perfect.
Doom 3 - Wow, this game also made me jump out of my chair. What made it so good was the levels were designed in such a manner that after a bit you start thinking EVERY wierd looking wall panel is really a door with something behind it. The first part where you walk into the bathroom and look in the mirror had my skin crawling, and the scenes where you'd hear the lady's voice or the baby crying were probably the creepiest by far. Also agree, the bug children were... disturbing. I remember being somewhat intoxicated and on teamspeak with my friends when I finally got to the hell levels, I guess I just kept repeating "oh my god" over and over. The extensive need for the flashlight was annoying and did detract some from the game, but overall it was still good.
Half-life 2 - Ravenholm was a good level, the rest of the game wasn't that suspenseful at all really.
AvP1 and AvP2 - The human missions were suspenseful, lots of stuff jumping out at you, AND just the random stuff like pipes hissing or the little bugs flying around would get your tension up. The alien and predator missions were the total reverse, those felt more like you were running around in IQQDQ mode all the time.
Some things I would politely disagree with other members on:
System Shock 2 - I didn't find this scary at all. There was some suspense and hearing the many voices as they'd spawn was good, but not as in causing me to jump out of my chair. Also I didn't find the monkeys to be remotely scary. The robots creeped me out though.
Vampire Bloodlines - Also not scary at all, IMHO.

I have to agree to an extent but I think it was more frustrating than scary for me. Being the maverick idiot Uboot commander that I was, I tended to do the time in my designated grid square and then motoring off toward Gibraltor or Scapa Flow to hunt destroyers. I have to say no campaign of mine went past '41. In shallow water I can ditch one destroyer some times two if I can shoot one of them with a tail shot. However once there are 3 or more destroyers I have yet to survive because my brown water hunting gives me no depths to hide in.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
I would definitely agree with the AVP Marine missions. Nothing is worst when you have to go on recon, solo, into an abanded base, into a dark control room with just a flash light. Next you hear a roar and turn behind you to see a alien imprint in what was a door. Then you have to go through the door and and turn a corner to discovers skinned dead bodies hanging from the roof 2 inches in front of you, I needed new pants after that.
I also agree with F.E.A.R. but it really doesn't help with you play at night in a room surrounded by open windows. But what was the deal with all the guys disappearing in black smoke?
Other games that I would say earn the title of scary is the old Biohazard series. This was the first series of mass zombies hunting, although it is quite old, when I first played it I was a woman running around in New York with a pistol, not cool. And when you got caught, you were forced to watch your character's brains being eatan. Scary and disgusting.
I would also say the Resident Evil series is pretty damn scary, and they only get worst as the graphics improve. I remember playing Resident evil 3 when you are in an abandened house. I get a little bit too scaried/bored and tried to exit the house through the front door. The only thing I did managed to do was let 2 rather annoyed zombie dogs inside. The first one I shot 5 times to make sure before the second one jump on me and had the great desire to maul my face. I ended up killing it with a trusty knife to the throat, but it took me awhile to get back onto the couch and manage to push the right button.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Well the ending scenes of F.E.A.R. Extraction Point certainly were disgusting...

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
The scariest game I ever played was Resident Evil, way back in '96 when it first came out. I was 13 or 14 at the time.
Though,I must admit, there were a few moments in the Gamecube remake that made me jump,as well (one of them even caused me to actually hit my head).
-
Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
House of the dead 2 wasn't very scary, but then I played the orginal and on some part of it I went: "HOLY ****", If that was said in HotD2 it would be like: "Hol,e, *,**,*" terrible human voices in that game
Scariest game goes to the silent hill series personally

Had one great moment with REmake, it was a touch of brilliance to let some scenes play out differently. One of the biggest shocks was the dogs leaping through the window, so I was ready for that. But it didn't happen. It did happen on the way back though, had to take a break after that.

That was one of the moments that got me,too.

Not exactly horror, not even sudden shock (like in a few levels in Rreturn to Castle) but some quests, specially the ones in the dark foggy dungeons, (like the one in Crow Haven dungeons, or a few Ayelid ruins) creates a rather eerie and opressive atmosphere.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Doom. When you're that young, it's easy to be scared.
-
Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Resident Evil 5 looks promising and very scary. The trailer, although being a trailer, highlighted what kinda of stuff you would face. I tell you, I wouldn't want to be the hero in that story....
-
Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Doom3 and the AvP Marine campaign, definitely. I disliked AvP2. Though the crab creatures in the original Half-Life were quite scary as well. I agree wholeheartedly with Whacker re Doom3 and the voices and general jumpiness of the game. Especially when a metal wall panel falls away with a clang and a zombie or imp appears right in your face. Quake4 is quite scary when you're down in the reprocessing center where the "failed transfers" are walking (or crawling around).

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
I have The 11th Hour which I have lying around somewhere, could I ask your honest opinion, to do you find that game scary? As a note to myself, I really need to get around to installing the 3 1/2in floppy version of Alone in the Dark onto my computer. :2thumbsup:

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Both The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour isn't really that scary. You're just looking at FMV in-between long and sometimes boring puzzles. There are some favorite moments in both games, but that's mostly from the plotline as a whole. Such as in The 7th Guest,

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Strangely enough, though the 95% of the game was more humorous than frightening, I'd agree with Bloodlines. I couldn't acctually bring myself to play through the Hotel "level" for a while. Other than that, I don't recall ever being scared by a game. Shocked, perhaps, but not scared. Then again, I haven't played most of those listed here. AvP in particular intrigues me, and I've always thought I should get Thief 1.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
After having played Silent Hill 1 and 2, playing F.E.A.R (aka Frightening Events Are Rare) was pretty dull. And I never understood why the AI system was so hyped up, didn't seem that impressive to me.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Resident evil for sega saturn, particularly because I went from zelda and sonic to that in the space of a month. My cousin gave me the game, I didnt know what the hell was going on ( I was also 9) and I remember having nightmares for a day when I went through that dinning room door.... }
Took me like 2 months to beat it, scariest game ever, I will never play a game that freaked me out that bad, because of age, circumstance, and gameplay.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Fatal Frame series for the console is always a good scare.

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Thief 3, the Shalebridge Cradle mission.
During my first playthrough, I'd not read much about it, so I got scared to Hell and back a few times. I used to turn the sound off, so as to avoid the general noise... In the end I managed, somehow, to finish it.
Second playthrough (a year or so later), I remembered how scary it was (but not the specifics of what was scary), plus I'd read more about it (so I had all the hype about it in my mind), and I still got scared , and ended playing around 5 minutes one day, stopping, and starting over the next day. When I saw I wasn't going anywhere, I just skipped the level.
And yes, I'm a easy-to-scare guy. I don't watch horror movies, or play many horror games (I managed a bit of Stalker, but by then I had other stuff to play, so I gave it up...).
But Thief 3 will always have a space in my mind. I remember the PC Gamer feature they had, and the Sound Enginer (guy, whatever) interview.
"I want my scares to leave scars..."
Yep, that worked on me...

I won't go anywhere near this game, played it once, got through the first night up to the part were you get the ropes on your photo, couldn't play it after that.
I think I had a heart attack when I had to face Crucified Man, Broken Neck, Assistants, Editors, Long Arms, Bound Man, The Doll Girl, all of them, I got scared from every single ghost, even the ones that don't attack you.
-
Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
agree with doom3 and avp. doom three was actually scary to the point of annoyance. every time i turned a corner i was expecting some new freak to explode out of the wall. it was stressing me out more than a game should.
avp was fun scary though. the marine campaign was a white-knuckle run for your life. that campaign was brilliant game design. the rest of the game.. good, but not great like the marine section.

In all my life, I have never even gotten to the half-way point of a Fatal Frame game because I got too scared. That says a lot about a game.

Thief III - remember Shallowvale Cradle? (was that the name of the location?)

Re: Scariest Game You Ever Played?
Must be "X-Com" for me.....It is/was a turn-based strategy game in which you entered an area [e.g. wreck] under the sea with a couple of "underwater marines" and ALIENS wating down there.
You never knew where the aliens were hiding and there was always the chance to stumble across a bomb trap or the like....
It was a very intense game back in the days. The sound was awesome....

Now, that was X-Com 2 - Terror from the deep. I much preferred the first X-Com, UFO - Enemy Unknown. Ethereal terror sites still give me the creeps, I even have nightmares about those red-cloaked sobs. They're scary.

Yes, that is the UK/Japanese name. Fatal Frame (a name more fitting, in my opinion) is the US name.
