I do believe the tidbit regarding the engine was that it can handle more than 5,000 men on the screen at once. Any more would no doubt task all but the most powerful of 3D cards, thus alienating the bulk of the gaming population.

However, when you consider that Medieval's stack limit for a single army on the field of battle is 960 men (bringing both sides to 1,920 total) then a 'recommended' 5,000 man limit isn't so bad, even with an additional 960 man allied army joining the fray on both sides. The problem with the theoretical 5,000 limit is those crazed individuals (myself included) who go crazy for those online epic struggles that feature no less than 8 armies on the field of battle

I'm guess I'm really glad a 2Ghz+ CPU and a Radeon 9700 are in my immediate future

On another note, I can't wait I hope The Phoenicia will be in it. They probably won't be. Oh well Carthage is close enough since Phoenicia founded Carthage.

One of the things I hope will happen is the extension of the map to cover more of Arabia and Persia. Oh and I wonder how The Germanic tribes will be represented, they weren't that organized, will they just be rebels? I hope The Celts are playable too.

RTS? I think of TW as a TBS game with real battles. Am I the only one who views TW as a Turn-Based-Strategy game ala Civilization? No wonder the original Strategic Campaign was a bit lame.

If I remember correctly, GameStar sells 400,000 copies a month. From that point of view, every UK games magazine (and a lot of US ones) are the true little-known ones.

@GilJaySmith as for the gamestar, they sold around 326500 copies a month and they are the greatest magazine here in germany

as for the online subscription of the gs, u have to pay a monthly fee to use it and as a subscriber ur fee is only lower (3 Euro and 2 Euro)
but i think its not worth it cause all new info u would get are the other 5 screenies and no test or preview or things like that

Mick Schnelle: Rome simply looks fantastically. Metric ton way true to life in scene set troops produce a mad battle atmosphere. As a Shogun and Medieval fan I am sure they will also tune the game depth. The team hopefully optimizes the Performance, so that to Rome also runs on average computers.

The sprites in Medieval have eight orientations which they flip between as their facing changes and you rotate the camera. A proper 3D model can be rotated to point in any direction. Nothing to do with lines of sight or anything like that, just a better graphical effect.

I haven't a clue what that specific sentence means. It's entirely possible that PC Gamer wrote it to sell next month's issue, rather than for our benefit. If you buy the next issue of PC Gamer, and the article about TW3 leaves you feeling that PC gaming has not, in fact, been changed forever, then please blame them, not us.

I won't be saying much about TW3 even after official announcements, let alone now, since I haven't worked on the project, haven't played it a great deal, don't know many of the details which would make it come alive for you, and am not a company spokesman. I'm working on another project, and am going to be too busy to spend much time on the forums. Hopefully other CA staff with a closer relationship to TW3 will take up the challenge of this dialogue.

NagatsukaShumi, why in blazes should you stop work on your Dark Ages mod? Rome Total War is obviously going to include the early days of the Roman republic so I seriously doubt it is going to cover more than 500 years of history If anything your mod should fall in nicely between the fall of Rome to the period depicted in Medieval's Viking Invasion expansion pack (800AD onward?).

Keep at it man If your Dark Ages mod is any good many of us will play it and be thankful Besides, Fall 2003 is a loooong time from now.

On the vote for the next TW game Romans came out tops so I am not surprised that this will be the third in the series. The problem in going 3d is that they will probably scrape by on other areas, I dont expect the game to have many new features, Sad but true look at neverwinter nights as far as detail and features go it was worse than baldurs gate 1, I hope we dont end up going backwards instead of forwards going 3d with the totalwar series

I really doubt that LOTR is a viable option. A license such as that would cost a lot of money - and for what? The name? Would the name add that much in additional sales to an already successful franchise? I doubt it. There's nothing to prevent CA from doing a fantasy based TW game - they don't need an expensive license to do that. Besides, Sierra has the LOTR license - it isn't available.

Also would be nice to have different battle cries to chose from. And when the armies crash into eachother, there needs to be some physics so men get trampled, stopped in their tracks, and we should here the noise of thousands of shields and spears smashing into eacher at once

Have you guys seen what the Massive engine does? Thats the software that does the battles in the LOTR movies.

They played the prelude battle from FOTR at E3 on a Radeon 9700. (presumably with low poly, but most of them would have been low poly anyway in the movie)

This is looking lots like CA is doing much the same thing.

It needs some randomness to the formations. As it is in those pics, everyone is standing too perfectly. They need slight random variations in position. They have the posture randomness down though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif

I can believe that this is ingame. Particularly the one with the general in close up, you can see his polys. You would never get to see polys for prerendered movies.

I bet a Geforce4Ti will cope with it fine.

The terrain better just be an early development one cos it looks bad.

The pic with the barbarians charging the romans is interesting.
The barbarians have a nicely random line and posture.
The romans look just a little too perfect. And they don't seem to be armed

As for 5000 troops, with max unit size in MTW, you can get 16*200=3200 on your side *2=6400 for 2 sides, *2=12800 for 4 sides.

I just watched it

A Roman column marches to meet a force of Celts or Germanics (not sure which one). The commander orders the archers and ballistae to make ready. He shouts Fire and many of the oppposing force fall, while their leader who survives the initial archer and atillery volley (ahhh the familiar sound of catapults) orders an attack. The Romans form into a turtle (is that what it's called ?) formation and hand to hand ensues. All the Roman troops are armed with short swords. Hand to hand gets bloody as the Celts (i think) start breaking into the Roman formation. The intro ends with the Roman leader driving his sword into the Celt leader who's sprawled on the floor from a previous stab. The scene is very Braveheart or Gladiator like. What's very impressive is the manner in which the Roman soldiers keep marching slowly forward and the front row breaks out of the turtle to engage the enemy, while the remaining troops continue to close in.

This intro has everything baltantly visible, CA, Activision, TW logo all over the place. YAAAHOOOOO http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/wacko.gif

It's a very short teaser. I can't wait to see the game. After watching this first hand I have absolutely NO doubt that this is for real.
