First released years ago by MS, a cult built up around it. Over the years, MS has released the source and rights to it, and the community is very active in improving the game.
And now, finally, after trying for 3+ years, I can finally get onto the server because they've eliminated the obstacles, code wise!!!
Very Newb friendly, they even have a training program.

My advice to everyone would be to download as many of these tools as you can now, there is no telling how long they will remain online. Mark says the Sysinternals site will remain around "for a while". Better get while the getting is good though. :furious3: I will probably be downloading everything I can get my hands on and burning a CD with all the utils. The only good that can come out of this is that Vista benefits from Mark and Bryce's experience...
Bad news indeed.
I'll have to check and see if my suite is complete.
I do not intend to jump on the vista wagon on release day, instead i'll be running XP until vista is mandatory for any directx version that's mandatory for any Total War version.
Rootkit revealer, process explorer and flinemon. Priceless from Sysinternals . :2thumbsup:

Penumbra
Category: Gaming
Homepage: http://frictionalgames.com/?q=penumbra
OS: MS Windows 2K/XP
Open Source: No (However there is plenty of support for modification)
Description: A completely free first person adventure/horror game. The game is created by Frictional Studios and is intended as a demonstration of their new physics technology. The physics really are suberb and puts the likes of Valve's source engine and the Havok physics system to shame. The game is set in a haunted underground base in Greenland. The main character discovers the base whilst looking for clues about the wherabouts of their father. Penumbra involves plenty of puzzles that put the physics system to full use, as well as action-packed moments involving advanced AI and lots of dynamite. Plenty of parallels can be drawn between this and Doom 3, Thief, and any other remotely scary game involving lots of dark claustrophic interiors. The puzzles are excellent and the graphics are good enough to rival the latest next-gen titles.
Phew! Updated! :sweatdrop: Sorry I took so long getting around to it.
Thanks for the contributions and corrections.
DukeofSerbia, I've added the categories you specified except for OS. I want there to be at least 2 items per category, and I don't think we'll have another candidate for OS. I don't want to just put more Linux distros on the list, either. I think Knoppix will be enough.
Also, you guys are killing me - so much great stuff but you format it just a little bit off from what I put it into, making this into a lot of work. Thanks to those who post in my format and save me time and effort, and please please please just copy my format if you aren't doing so.
Out of curiousity, is there a way to create a link that will scroll down to a specific part of a post? IE, a link that says "Gaming" that when you click on it you jump down to the gaming part of the post.
----
I've been thinking. Would it be feasible for people to "vote" for software they've used? IE, you'd post:
Mozilla Firefox +1
GIMP -1
If you've used both, liked firefox, and disliked GIMP? I would then add the totals and put them in the entries. Votes would not count if they were for a program you submitted, and it would be honor system. What do you guys think?

Description:This tool can be downloaded as an ISO image and burned onto a bootable Linux CD for partition management. It's essentially a open source clone of Partition Magic, with a myriad of filesystems supported. Haven't tried it yet, so I'm not quite ready to sing it's praises, but I've got a shortage on my C: drive right now, and giving $70 to Symantec just to move over 5 GB from my D: drive does not sit very well with me. Anyone else use this tool yet?Quote:
GParted is the Gnome Partition Editor application.
A hard disk is usually subdivided into one or more partitions. These partitions are normally not re-sizable (making one larger and the adjacent one smaller) The purpose of GParted is to allow the individual to take a hard disk and change the partition organization therein, while preserving the partition contents.
GParted is an industrial-strength package for creating, destroying, resizing, moving, checking and copying partitions, and the filesystems on them. This is useful for creating space for new operating systems, reorganizing disk usage, copying data residing on hard disks and mirroring one partition with another (disk imaging).
I just want to give a little shout-out to this thread. I hosed my Windows install, and thanks to the links on the first page, I was able to get all of my apps back in record time. God bless us all, and Tiny Tim, too!
GParted is add'd.
Thanks Lemur. Glad to hear you got your PC back up and running quick-like. :medievalcheers:

The new version has been running for a year now, but it's based on an old boardgame. It used to be 100% free, now you just can't make your own clan and you can't play SP campaigns if you don't pay, but that's not needed anyway, it's about the MP. Next to that you can get a free upgrade to full membership simply by "advertising the game" (that's having a sig with your stats, like I do).
Pegasus Mail

Email program with powerful filter and other features. Won't be developed any more since it's taking up too much of the developer's time, so get it while you can. Re-reading the wiki, it seems Pegasus will still be freeware for single users, but people using it for several accounts will have to pay for a licence.
Mailwasher
Homepage Wiki
Email is initially sent to your email server, where it stays until you download it to your computer. AFAIK, MS email software doesn't have any way of checking your email without actually downloading it from the server. Mailwasher gets around that, by downloading the headers of the emails on your email server, before you decide whether to download them or delete them. This can save both bandwidth and provide security by letting you delete suspicious emails before they get to your computer. NB. Pegasus Mail has these functionalities built in.

Speedfan http://www.majorgeeks.com/download337.html
This is a freeware tool that allows to monitor several temperatures, but more importantly to reduce the speed of CPU, PSU and case fans. My standard CPU fan was running at ~2600 RPM and made a lot of noise. Reduced it to 75%-1800RPM (make sure that the temperature is still in the safe zone). It's running at the same idle temperature and makes much less noise, will run Prime95 to test load.
Edit: 50-52% load, temperature is fine, fanspeed increased to 2140 (temperature controlled).
Thank you Tosa. Much appreciated for that link.
I've been using SpeedFan forever. Not to alter fan speeds, but just to monitor system temps and hard drive SMART info. It's a great, multipurpose utility.Quote:

Updated! Sorry that took so long. I got lazy. :book:
As well as adding the last dozen programs posted, I fixed Gaim which has been renamed Pidgin.
I also added Spring, a really amazing open source RTS engine. I highly recommend that you take a look at it. It's based on Total Annihilation, and in my opinion it's better than Supreme Commander, TA's "spiritual successor".
Sweet! I loved TA- how playable is it, and how well does it stack up content wise?Quote:

There are a half-dozen TA-based mods, which vary in content and style. It's fairly stable, although sometimes multiplayer has synching errers - though I haven't played enough to say. There are a couple of AI's for bots out there, too, although they aren't Napoleons.
As for content, I don't know how the TA mods compare to TA since I never played, but in general the content is varied and decent looking. A little low-poly, but that's true of a lot of open source games.
I've been playing this with Leet Eriksson aka Faisal some time ago and it was decent, but not overwhelming.
Since it's free, I wouldn't complain though ~;)
Oh man, Krogoths.... :laugh4:
I just had a most awesome skirmish game. My base was almost totally destroyed and under heavy shelling when ole'Kroggy finally arrived on the scene- his gantry was among the last structures still standing. Then, it was payback time. :whip:

The crater in the bottom right is their former cloak-able fusion reactorand in the upper right is their commander, who died about 2 seconds after this screenshot. :2thumbsup:
They've done a really good job with the game- I'd like some more UI improvements though. It'd be neat if someone re-created the original campaigns too.
Which mod is that - AA? Krogoths are so nasty. Multiple nukes don't scare them. :book:
