I like that the lawnmower has a stereo system.
what do you mean it was photoshopped ???
I of course would always refer to manipulating a picture using Adobe® Photoshop® software.
Actually. Someone in their legal department had to be having a laugh.

I see. So the mods all go to the same international school for slow children then? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...icons/wink.gif
You're lucky if that doesn't get this thread closed. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ons/tongue.gif
it's been a while since i've posted anything in here, but i found this cute little program for doing this stuff and thought i'd do a simple one and post it here. if this works right, just click on the link and it shld be played by windows media player.

ok, let's see if this works :)
it's a big file, so it may take a while to load. 56k'ers beware
K.
here's another one. it's a simple morph and looks more like a standard .gif animation, but the morph program just makes things easier because it does all the intermediary frames.
this is from one of Dimeolas's art works. i altered his original to give me the darker one and then applied both to the morph program. fun stuff.
Dimeolas is a patron here on the .org and has a nice site up with some of his art work. i forget the url for it, so if someone knows it, why feel free to post it.
and dimeolas, if you object to my use of your work, please, just pm me and i'll take the thing down.

edit: the best way to run this is, prolly to click on the link once and let it load all the way through. then kill that page and click it again so you're running from the cached version you now have. this one is only 3.7 megs or so, so not nearly as long as that last one.

Works fine http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...s/bigthumb.gifQuote:

For Jacque and the rest of you space/astronomy fans, NASA just released the "Hubble Ultra Deep Field" image. This image contains over 10,000 galaxies. It is a 1 million second exposure collected over a 4 month period of time and 400 orbits. You've probably seen the teeny picture release to the web news services. However, you can view the picture in all its glory - that would be a 6200x6200 image available in an 80mb jpg or a 100mb tiff.
Go to this page and select one of the mirrors - demand has been high for the image.
I'm in the middle of downloading it right now. It has been downloading for about 30 minutes now and I only have half the image, and this is on a cablemodem. It is taking a long time but the image is spectacular so far http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
wow. that was pretty amazing.
K.
Yeah, the picture is large enough that you actually can explore it. Galaxies of all colours, shapes and sizes. Some pretty groupings too. I even saw several galaxies distorted into ( shapes due to gravitational lensing (yes, gravity does affect lightwaves).
yeah, i downloaded the .jpg version. got it on my drive now. loaded it up in paint shop pro. pretty cool. you can also get the smaller versions and even versions set for wallpaper on a desktop. kinda cool. but i keep looking for a little 'kilroy was here' message. havent found it yet ;)
K.
Krae, I didn't find Kilroy, but I did find something...else. It is rather disturbing. Below is small section of the Hubble image:

The poor thing must be distorted by a strong gravitational field like that of a black hole. Nature can be cruel.
I was scanning some of my Civil War reenactment pictures tonight and thought I'd share a few.
First, a couple of pictures of some Confederate Cavalry. It amazes me how some of these folks really look the part. In the second picture, the second cavalryman from the right looks to be a rare female soldier reenactor.

Last up is a picture from a "live fire" mortar competition. Note the cannonball just above the column of smoke.

Maybe more to follow of some "action" next time.
I have been to a number of re enactments in the UK, but it isn't as big over here - the ACW period - for obvious reasons, which is a shame. I always meant to get involved but never got round to it. I would really like to go to Gettysburg one year on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of July to see the big re enactment I am told happens every year, something I have penciled in, in the very near future.
JAG, the big reenactments are the 5 year ones. They just had the 140th last year, so you have 4 years to plan your visit for the next big one. On off years, they have about 3,000 reenactors. I was at the 135th anniversay reenactment in 1998 for the Pickett's Charge battle. They estimated about 16,000 reenactors participated and I personally counted over 90 cannons.
Wanna see some of those pictures? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...c-wideeyed.gif That was what I was mostly scanning last night. I'll have to compress them a bit first.
Yes please, I would love to see more pictures, I am not only interested in your civil war period but totally in awe of it. I still wonder not only about the different outcome but about which side I really would have stood for on principle, it is a tough one. I of course see the validaty of the union position in keeping the United states together and abolishing slavery but I just as much - fif not more - see the position of the CSA. States rights was meant to - and still meant to be - such an integeral part of the way of life. Anyway I could ramble for ages, and I thoroughly enjoy talking about the period, though normally over here it is educating people to the real position of the CSA rather than prejudice and disgust normally aimed at them.
I was even planning a trip for this year - if I took another gap year - where I would go over there for about 2 months and just visit all of the major east coast battlefields in order, I still very much hope and wish I get round to it in the future, I will somehow not feel happy until I have.
Thank you also about the info on Gettysburg re enactment, I would love to see pickett's charge re enacted, to see the terrain they marched over and the distance, to see if it was really impossible like so many say - and was proved to a large extent. Yes, I need to stop typing I could go on for days.
Hey JAG if you are interested in seeing the reenactments it is best to visit that site of the battle the day of the year the battle was fought and for Gettysburg the dates are from July 1st to the 3rd from a quick look on the internet but I could have sworn it was a four day battle. This was a major battle due to the fact this was the first and only time the confederates had marched into northern territory taking the war to them. Also for major events like that you need to get hotel reservation 1 year in advance or you are SOL
Well you history of the era seems a little hazy - NO disrespect meant. It was a 3 day battle, it should not even have been a 3 day battle it should have been a major Confederate victory single day battle, but there you go. Waiting until 2063 might be somewhat of a wait, think I would have felt condemned to go before then :p
The confederates previously marched into Northern territory, and there was many battles in northern territory. When the CSA first invaded the north in '62 the bloodiest day of America's history was the result. The battle of Antietam. A HUGELY outnumbered Confederate force manage to cling on and withdraw back to southern territory through a mixture of inspired generalship - as ever - from Lee and poor generalship from McClellan.
If ever there was a poorer general than Mclellan, I should like to know his name. Of course, there is that NTW guy named McClelland, but I daresay he is pretty talented. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif
McClellan was very good at building up and army, keeping high moral and getting into threatening positions, but he was TERRIBLE as a commander and actually advancing into combat. He had multiple oppourtunities to end the war but failed to do so, which is a shame think of all the lives. Anyway this probably shouldn't turn into a n ACW thread should it, probably should start a new one for that :p
As promised, what follows is a series of 7 pictures from the 135th Anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1998.
There were about 16,000 reenactors and over 90 cannons. The reenactment field was about 2-3 miles (3-5km) from the actual battlefield.
The field dimensions were about 3/4 of a mile between the Union and Confederate lines and 1/3 of a mile across. From my vantage point,
the Confederates are advancing from the right to the distant Union lines on my left. Except for the panorama picture,
all were taken with a 300mm telephoto lense to get closer to the action. The panorama was taken with a standard 55mm lense.
Without further ado...
When the cannonade finally subsided, out from the trees that lined Seminary Ridge, came the men of Pickett's,
Pettigrew's and Trimble's divisions.

Apologies for the width of this last picture, but its effect was lost when reduced down to 700 pixels wide.
Great pictures Greg, thank you. I am sure the artillery barrage which I assume happened true to historical form, was a site to see.
Yeah, artillery barrage was awesome. The problem with taking pictures of the artillery barrage is that unless you time it well, you just get a bunch of smoke. I have a few pictures that are okay, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the 7 above in shape to post.
I love the cannons because you can feel the concussion when they fire. In fact, at reenactments they usually tell you to turn off your car alarm as a cannon firing can set them off. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
how do they handle artillery at re-enactments? Do they not load the cannon? Or do they aim it away from people?Quote:

The quick answer is, like the musket, gunpowder is loaded into the guns, but they omit putting projectiles into the barrel. I also think they use something less than a historically correct amount of gunpowder in the guns.
Here is an example of an okay picture of cannons firing:

And here's what it looks like if you are a little slow on the shutter button:

The above picture is 3 or 4 Union cannons firing simultaneously. They are behind the smoke...honest
To see - you said 90 yes? - Go off across the Battlefield must be great. I have been to a re enactment where they had 2 Rifled Cannons, and yes the shudder you can definitely feel, it is great. I can only imagine what the battlefields would have really been like with hundreds going off.
