The Grossdeutschland division is often described as Waffen SS, especially by Soviet historians, but was in fact German Army, not SS at all.

(I'm not a Nazi fanboy either, I've just played a few WW2 boardgames like K, TK, WiF and the Victory series)

Grossdeutschland and Kleindeutschland were also political alternatives in the establishment of the second Reich: basically the smaller (klein-) entity (ultimately constellated around Prussia) coalesced in 1866, but there was a bigger (grosse-) alternative aiming to encompass all the volksdeutsch: probably only an option available to the Hapsburgs in the 19th century, if they had triumphed over Prussia, France, nascent Italy, disobedient Hungary, the Otto-men, and the Romanovs.

The Anschluss was a clear pointer to Grossedeutschlandic aspirations for any student of history...also calling a unit Grossdeutschland was a bit of a give-away too
