Actually, if I have to believe some studies that I've seen floating around over the years, humans go a long way. Newer studies suggest that humans can, for example, smell women ovulating, though you won't be aware that you do.
Olfaction has a profound subconscious effect. Take the following important work of science for example. ~;)
