Join him there, people...
Taking the save.
Report for 1096
1096 was a year of battles, with some revolts being suppressed, some not, and some yet remaining unresolved.
Military Affairs
Danubian Frontier
Bucharest is saved in a sally by Basileus Alexios. The rebel army was completely annihilated and Roman losses were light. The Basileus remains in Bucharest for the moment.
Belgrade has come under siege. The garrison consists of 112 peasants, after Anastasios Neokaisareitis left the city. Methodios Tagaris and myself have now arrived on the scene, and are attempting to collect all the reinforcing troops that have come from the south. Only 100 soldiers could be collected at Belgrade this year, but that will grow to 600 next year, and to 800 in the following year. Though it may not be necessary, this could grow to 2000 in the year after that. Woe to him who attacks the Roman Empire!
Reports from the west say that Zagreb was garrisoned by the Hungarian army that had been nearby, and was then besieged by the rebels.
Pontic Frontier
Sinop has fallen undefended. Caesar Ioannis marches on Sinop with 380 men, while Pavlos Chrysovergos takes a further 370 away from the city.
Syria
Antioch was saved in a sally by Makedonios Ksanthopoulos and the men of the Order. The rebel army was destroyed.
Interior
Savvas ek Militou is now in Macedonia still marching towards Belgrade. He is slated to be in the 3rd wave of reinforcements.
Sufficient recruitment was performed around the Empire to equip the two private armies of the House Asteri to their minimum requirements. Except that there were no foot missile troops that could be recruited anywhere, so they will have to do for the moment with extra regiments of Scythikon, which seem to meet the "ranged" requirement of our Charter.
Civilian Affairs
Construction was started in each idle settlement.
5500 florins had to be drawn from the treasury this year due to heavy construction and recruitment. There is still a 16600 florin reserve in the treasury.

Taking save
Belgrade has been freed with the help of Anastasios Neokeisareitis who I must commend for his warrior abilities, however much we may differ otherwise
There are two saves because Methodios got a Heroic Victory and a MoH out of that one :
Save 1 : http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pbm/LOTR-1098-4.rar (with the MoH offer)
Save 2 : http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pbm/LOTR-1098-4b.rar (with the MoH accepted)
I didn't know what the policy was about MoH and was not sure the offer would withstand the save, which apparently it does, so I made those two saves...
Pics should be up as soon as possible...
EDIT : Please make Methodios enter Belgrade as I forgot to do it...
Taking the save(s)
http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pbm/LOTR-1098-5.zip
Made a few moves and declined MoH offer using "the Megas Logothetes can do whatever he wants" rule as adoptions are not mentioned anywhere in the rules. The following reasoning was applied:
Kosmas Mavrozomis was the adopter, and Zim told me that it makes no sense IC, in that Tagaris is not liked by Mavrozomis in any sense.
If the Megas Logothetes has any say in it (i.e. it needs his stamp of approval), then the whole thing is out of the question, Ampelas hates Tagaris. Hell, he's mad about this "heroic" act itself, never mind the previous disagreements they had, although it does save him a turn off the trip to Turkey.
I am going to freeze the game momentarily for a discussion of the MoH situation. Please do not take the save.
The game is now unfrozen and can resume. However, no one can take the save until Zim decides whether to accept the MoH adoption. If he does accept the adoption, the game should continue from this save. If he does not accept the adoption, the game should continue from this save. In either case, please wait for a post from Zim before taking the save.
I did say I'd open up Kosmas' Children slots to any MOTH to make it easier fir people to join the Imperial family. :beam:
Go ahead and play from the the "adoption accepted" save. If I can, I'll work out something vaguely plausible IC with Tristan, if not, well, we'll pretend they aren't related on the family tree.
Just a note that though I look to advance the game ASAP, I will have to take a nap first, so the save will be open over night. I'd expect next turn's save some 12 hours from now.
Taking the save.
Report for 1098
Military Affairs
Danubian Frontier
The army to remove the threat from Belgrade was assembling in this year. Without making an attempt to coordinate with any of some 600 reinforcement troops which were in range to arrive this year, Methodios Tagaris conducted an attack on the rebel army with 100 men which were (foolishly on the part of the Megas Logothetes) placed under his command. He was aided by about 100 peasants which were drawn from Belgrade's garrison, and which were the only thing holding the rebels outside the city walls. If he had lost, the city would have fallen needlessly right under the noses of 600 Imperial troops. The risk was pointless and the glory is hollow. Belgrade was not saved, but endangered.
Savvas ek Militou will take over the defense in the Belgrade area when he arrives with his troops from Greece in about a year's time.
The Megas Logothetes is taking the bulk of the troops from Belgrade to Anatolia in an attempt to fulfill the Senate's war Edict.
Pontic Frontier
Caesar Ioannis still marches on rebel-held Sinop, but has not made much progress this year. Hopefully, he will make better progress in the following year.
Pavlos Chrysovergos continues on to Trebizond. A Turkish army disappeared in the same direction some years back. If they are besieging Trebizond, Pavlos Chrysovergos is strongly urged not to start a war before the army is assembled for an offensive over the plains of central Anatolia. Pavlos Chrysovergos should contact the Megas Logothetes if he should find Turkish troops at Trebizond.
The heretic Spartacus, having left the protection of his army, was condemned by Vakchos Courkouas and was burned at the stake.
Syria
Most of the Order's generals are marching towards the fort of Aleppo. One of their followers was discovered to be a pagan magician and was drowned in the river.
Interior and Sea
The Aegean fleet has picked up Ioannis Kalameteros from Rhodes and dropped him off on a small Aegean island to build a watchtower, while the fleet sailed to Athens to pick up fresh recruits for the two Asteri private armies. The fleet stands to return next year, while the northern fleet has picked up Anna Komnene and is on its way south.
Civilian Affairs
The Pope of Rome has called a holy crusade on the city of Jerusalem, which is currently in the hands of the Saracens of Egypt.
The Hungarians seemed to have dispatched a large army to the southwest, possibly to reinforce Zagreb.
Construction and recruitment was lighter this year and a minimal sum was drawn from the treasury reserves. The only major project was the castle upgrade at Sofia. The Empire will now have two advanced troop recruitment centers.
With the completion of roads in Nicaea, Belgrade, and Dyrrakhion, virtually the entire Empire is connected by a road network.

I moved Armatos back to Antioch province to resupply and to escort the mighty peasant defense force. I had the 4 Sergeants siege Aleppo. While doing so, the merchant got knocked out of the way. I merged the merchant in with the Sergeants so he could keep trading.

Report for 1099
Military Affairs
Pontic Frontier
Pavlos Chrysovergos has reached Trebizond and saw that it was besieged by troops of the Turkish Sultan. This may prove to be our casus belli. I have asked Pavlos Chrysovergos to hold his attack until the offensive armies are assembled. He has held his attack for this year, but does not seemed to have made a final decision yet.
Caesar Ioannis still makes no progress towards Sinop.
Syria
Aleppo is now under siege, while most of the Order's army is in Antioch. The armies in Syria are poorly supplied, and a ship has been dispatched to the Eastern Med to ferry supplies from Cyprus.
Eastern Frontier
Ioannis Kalameteros has arrived in Smyrna with reinforcements from Greece. The pair of Asteri private armies is essentially complete and sits in Smyrna. They are not fully built to specification, however, since a pair of regiments revolted on their way from Dardanellia, and the armies are short on missile troops. They will have to be supplemented with mercenaries.
Interior and Sea
I am three years' march away from the Turkish border.
Savvas ek Militou continues toward Belgrade. Kosmas Mavrozomis is heading to the east.
After ships were detached for the Eastern Med, the Aegean fleet consists of 4 ships.
Civilian Affairs
Anna Komnene has arrived in Smyrna.
A French diplomat at Belgrade offered trade rights, which was accepted.
The King of the Germans has declared war on the Fatimids of Egypt, who are currently in possession of Jerusalem. I believe this means that the Germans have assembled a crusade, which will be passing through our lands shortly. Also, the Fatimid Sultan has died.
An abbey was started in Antioch, and a drill square in Corinth. Both of these will be essential, the first one in pacifying the populace of Antioch and the second with providing advanced, sword-bearing troops of great use in hand-to-hand fighting in cities.
Recruitment was mainly priests and a ship.
3000 florins had to be drawn from the treasury reserves.

Report for 1101
1101 was a year of little activity. It was also the halfway point of my term as Megas Logothetes, which is why I will dedicate the report to overall strategy, and list the events at the end.
There will be a war against the Turks. I predict that the official declaration will come within three years. At the same time, the main attack force will cross into Seljuk-held Anatolia. The attack force comprises 2000 soldiers in total, and will initially be split into two armies, the northern under my own command, and the southern under the command of Ioannis Kalameteros. The first one is in Thrace now and expected to arrive at the border in three years. The second, which is the combination of the private armies of Ioannis Kalameteros and Hypatios Machonios, is assembled in Smyrna.
Meanwhile, Pavlos Chrysovergos watches the Turks at Trebizond, and will attack simultaneously, or even before the main attack.
The West and the Danube are defended by Savvas ek Militou and Basileus Alexios. They have sufficient troops for the task, and it is up to them how to deploy them. If a German crusade comes about, I would ask them to keep an eye on it.
Ceasar Ioannis's lack of progress towards Sinop is disturbing. There is no useful reason for Sinop to remain rebellious. This will not impede the progress of the attack in southern Anatolia, but it would be nice to have back.
The Order continues to attempt to expand slowly around Antioch. Hopefully it won't be long before their lands are contiguous with the rest of the Empire.
The fleet has gone to Crete as a show of force. The Venetian fleet there is of similar size and quality to ours.
Recruitment has slowed down at this time, except for the Navy, which expects to receive another ship years year, and except for priests in Antioch, which have been recruited each year for the past three years.
Construction continues at a decent rate despite the tight budget. A bowyer was started in Nicosia, and it will be the Empire's first, though many archers tend to be available as mercenaries. The complete lack of siege equipment will be addressed when the ballista maker in Nicaea is completed. Roads have been started in Athens, and will complete the road network in the contiguous parts of the Empire. Finally, I have it from a reliable source that brothels are good at attracting spies, and since we have only one spy, I have used Imperial funds to commission a brothel in Thessalonike.
And as the last bit of news, something that everyone already knows, Ioannis Kalameteros and Anna Komnene have been married.
The treasury reserve decreased by 1000 florins this year.

Retreat.
Turns out Armatos was suffering from a -11 morale penalty. I'm not sure exactly how morale works in MII:TW, but I think that means General's Bodyguards' morale would be lower than regular peasents. Given that I'd only be fighting with Avatars, and we'd be outnumbered five-to-one, I hope my choice was correct.

Report for 1102
1102 was another quiet year. The calm before the storm, as it were.
Military
Pontic Frontier
Caesar Ioannis has finally reached Sinop and laid siege. In the same year, the rebels sallied and were defeated. Sinop is ours once again.
The brigands holding Trebizond have sallied against the Turks and lost. The Turks have occupied the city.
Syria
The expedition to Aleppo has captured the fort. The Order may deploy the priests in their lands as they see fit. The single ship now deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean is now under the control of the Order.
Councillor Gottfried of the Templars has taken a page out of our own book of strategy, and marches with just his bodyguard on Adana, which the Turks have taken this year.
Sea
The Aegean fleet, now 6 ships in strength, destroyed a pair of pirate ships off the coast Euboea.
Civilian
The Venetians and the Germans are now at war. The German crusade has been spotted, it is just north of the Danube.
Kosmas Mavrozomis has been married!
New construction this year was stables in Smyrna and a church in Dyrrakhion, the last settlement not to have a church at all. There was some recruitment.
The minor nobles of the Empire feel we should establish diplomatic contact with the Germans if they will be heading through our lands on crusade. A diplomat is positioned to do that soon enough.
500 florins had to be drawn from the treasury reserve this year.

Military
Pontic Frontier
There have been reports of skirmishing between Roman and Turkish troops at Trebizond. It hasn't been skirmishing so much as that the Turks have not been allowed to leave Trebizond by Pavlos Chrysovergos. I will write to the Turkish Sultan to clear up this little matter.
Danubian Fronter
The commanders on the Danube are now watching the German crusade. Currently, they have conspired to leave the passage by Belgrade impassible, and the crusade will probably be forced through Transylvania and Wallachia into Bulgaria.
Syria
The Order has moved their army north of Antioch. It is completely out of supplies.
Eastern Frontier
The two armies continue towards Turkish lands. The northern is a Nicaea, and the southern has left Smyrna this year.
Civilian
Ioannis Kalameteros has had a daughter.
The only construction this year has been knight's stables in Sofia, which will allow us to train moderately heavy skirmishing cavalry. There was some recruitment.
Most disturbingly, the Germans have declared war on us. Their crusade disappeared out of sight, and I have been informed that there was a declaration of war. Though we have not been attacked anywhere that I can see, we are very clearly indicated to be at war presently. I will seek diplomatic contact with them.
