Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
I basically did what Oleo said:Made a copy of Rome Data\EB\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign and renamed it barbarian_invasion
Made a copy of Rome Data\EB\Data\text\imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt and renamed it barbarian_invasion_regions_and_settlement_names.txt
Deleted Rome Data\EB\Data\world\maps\base\map.rwm
Loaded the EB mod through Barbarian Invasion. The campaign seems to work fine but the historical battles screen is still empty.
I'm using a direct download version of RTW. Not the CD. Don't know if that's important. Many thanks to Edwin, Feral and all the moders![/QUOTE]
Hey there,
I was getting the 'select from list' error, and I followed this through except deleting the map.rwm, and as a result was able to get into the faction chooser menu, however, when i clicked the continue arrow, the game crashed to desktop. I then deleted the map.rwm, and this solved my crashing problem, but now when I click 'continue' the game boots me back to the single player menu, which says 'main campaign', 'custom battle' etc.
Any thoughts on how to solve this issue?
Cheers

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hey guys, I installed the EB mod ok after dropping it into the RomeData file. However the campaign wasnt working, so i did as quoted here:
"
"
I get through to the selection of a faction, but when i click proceed to campaign it brings me back to the Single Player / New Game menu (with options "Start EB campaign, custom battle, historic battle" etc.
Has anybody else had this problem?

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hello.
I had the same problem with the script as many other people here. When I ran the script, all I got was this:
/Volumes/RomeModSetup/Files/RomeModSetup.command ; exit;
localhost:~ samuelminick1$ /Volumes/RomeModSetup/Files/RomeModSetup.command ; exit;
************************************************
** Checking Rome is installed in Applications **
************************************************
***********************************************
** Check if RomeData is already Read Write **
***********************************************
/dev/disk4 Apple_partition_scheme
/dev/disk4s1 Apple_partition_map
/dev/disk4s2 Apple_HFS /Volumes/RomeData
logout
[Process completed]
However... I found a solution. I can't guarantee it will work for everyone(although I see no reason for it not to). What I figured was that the RomeData.dmg disc image was set to 'read', while it should have been 'read-write'.
Here is what I did:
1. Download & install following program, DMGConverter(ww w.macupdate.com/app/mac/24630/dmgconverter).
2. Backup RomeData.dmg found in the Application folder under the Rome Total War folder in some place not Desktop(if you copy it to the desktop, there will be duplicates).
3. Launch DMGConverter and open the Rome Total War folder in Applications.
4. Drag RomeData.dmg from the Rome Total War folder over into DMGConverter and let it work its magic. A new RomeData.dmg file with brand new 'read-write' capabilities will now appear on your desktop.
5. Now simply delete the RomeData.dmg found in the Rome Total War folder, and replace it with the RomeData.dmg created by DMGConverter.
6. Launch, and you should now be good to go.
I got the 'missing from list' error after I had done this, but if you get the same error, just follow the previous instruction mentioned by the other folks here.
I hope this helps anyone with the same problem:)

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
EDWIN! Please come back! Someone please help or I will have a mental breakdown haha
I used to play all the time on my 2007 Macbook Aluminum when I had OS Leopard 10.5. I now have the same one, upgraded to Lion 10.7, and EB just won't work!
PROBLEM: Everything is fine until I start campaign as any faction, and 5 seconds into the campaign (the map is loaded and things are moving), it freezes and then CTD. I have tried everything from disabling movies, switching to launching from BI, setting the graphics to low, to crazy high, to turning off the sound, etc etc.
Here is the factory crash report, dunno if this is what you're looking for:

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
I did it! I fixed my problem with CTD!
Turns out the culprit was..... the RAM! I forgot that I had not played EB since last year, and half a year ago I had upgraded the RAM from 2GB apple generic 1067mhz ddr3 to 8GB G-Skill 1333mhz ddr3. I guess EB just doesn't seem to want to be friends with the new RAM, so I swapped out the 8GB for the 2GB and BOOM. flawless performance.
Perhaps a couple of seconds slower than before, but I will sacrifice speed for ability to play EB.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Just as a postscript from the previous two posts: I figured, why waste the two dimms of 4GB each? So I combined one of the stock 1GB 1067mhz ddr3 with one of the 4GB G-Skill 1333mhz ddr3...... and it works as well! It's not that visible of a jump between 5 and 8GB of RAM (for a basic laptop with no graphic/movie/music editing requirements), but between 2 and 5- you better believe it is!
The 8GB 1333mhz simply and automatically adjust its clock speed to the slower 1GB 1067mhz, so they're both running at a total of 5GB 1067mhz, with all my applications (word, excel, interwebs, itunes) running as if I had 8GB; but with EB being functional!! Praise the Lord!
For everyone who needs to troubleshoot problems with EB on mac: Edwin put a lot of effort to ensure the game runs well, so the problem will most likely lie in your comp's configurations and hardware. The biggest indication for me that the problem may lie outside the software was that after seeing EB crash upon the campaign map loading, I fired up the plain-jane vanilla Rome Total War and it crashed in the exact same fashion. It appeared that either the whole RTW game was somehow corrupt (which didn't seem like it because the same disk image had worked for me before on an older comp), or it was my comp's configurations that needed to be changed.
I subsequently googled portions of my long-ass error report (two posts above) and some forum mentioned that "it can be a lot of things, but it may be your RAM." So I googled how to check your Mac's RAM, and did a Memcheck through the Terminal application, and everything came out as ok, good to go.
So I figured I might just switch out the two sticks back to 2GB and see what happens. The rest you know.
good luck to everyone!

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hey, I'm having a pretty big problem installing EB, or actually just modifying my Rome game at all. I did everything successfully before, when I had a normal CD Mac version of Rome, but my CD drive broke and I've been unable to insert any disc into it or for it to read it. I tried to find a way to run Rome without a disc but eventually gave up, not finding a crack. Anyway, I rebought Rome from Feral as a download, the one you don't need a CD for. The problem is that the same method of changing the image to read/write through the full-download script doesn't seem to work, nor have my attempts to make a new image file with the same information. Is there any work around for this?
A billion thanks
bold is so that you'll PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!!!

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Having similar problems to some others on here....
Managed to install EB and get past the 'please select from list' problem, but now when I try to start a campaign, I choose my faction and click next and it returns me to the menu. I can't start a campaign.
Does anyone know how to solve this?

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hey, here's what I did to try and fix things for EB on my mac, it appears to have worked ;
Firstly, I couldn't get the installer for mac to work, so I used disk utility convert the RomeData disk image to read/write. If you do this and the image doesn't have enough free space on it use disk utility to make a new disk with the same name, "RomeData", and put the original in another location as a back up.
So, now you have a read/write disk image with the original data on. Mount the EB disk image and copy the folder in that into RomeData. Make sure your new RomeData with EB and the original data files on is in the same folder as the RTW application.
Then I followed these instructions from jobbysucks ;
"
I basically did what Oleo said:Made a copy of Rome Data\EB\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign and renamed it barbarian_invasion
Made a copy of Rome Data\EB\Data\text\imperial_campaign_regions_and_se ttlement_names.txt and renamed it barbarian_invasion_regions_and_settlement_names.tx t
Deleted Rome Data\EB\Data\world\maps\base\map.rwm
Loaded the EB mod through Barbarian Invasion. The campaign seems to work fine but the historical battles screen is still empty."
Then I downloaded the 1.2 fixes which you can find in this forum, and copied them over to where they need to be in the RomeData data files, EB folder.
I'm launching the mod using RTW, not BI, but I think you can do either, and in the advanced option you have to put "-mod:EB" without quotes.
This worked, and I could play the campaign, but I was experiencing a large amount of CTDs, especially in battles. After looking at various forums I noticed a few people suggesting that running an older game such as this one on a multiple core system could lead to CTDs as the programme found it difficult to work between cores. On windows you can switch a core off on a per application basis, but not so on a mac, we don't have task manager. So I downloaded the CHUD developer tools. You can get them for free online, check google. They're kinda fun and have a bunch of stuff in them, but also come with a processor preference tool, which you can use to switch your processors off. So I did, I turned one off to play EB with (I only have dual core). Although I've had to turn my graphics down slightly I haven't had a CTD for a while. The processor comes on again straight away after you restart your computer (you can switch it on in with the app, but I always forget to...)
So, that's what I've done, and it seems to work! Hope it helps, and I'll report back any changes.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hi, I have the "Gold version" of RTW, got through App Store and am having problems installing EB. I am also quite new to using Macintosh which might explain some of the confusion. I've downloaded the Mac-version of EB, the "Mod setup pack", through the EB-website and followed the video instruction.
The problem:
After I started the installation through the mod setup, the Terminal popped-up and I let it work for the recommended 15 mins. I then start RTW, but it crashes instantly, before the window ,where I'm supposed to write "-mod:EB", comes up. I then read the Terminal and it says something about that the installation wasn't successful - more than that I don't remember.
Now, as I open the RomeData.dmg there sure is an EB-map, together with the Data-map and BI-map. But it is only a few kB:s big, confirming the unsuccessful installation. So, now I want to try to make an install again, but now that I start the mod setup it only gives me the option to Enable mods for RTW in difference to the option of Installing the EB-mod. In other words there's something that stopping the setup from installing the game. What could it be?
Afterwards I happened to restart my computer ,and when I tried launching R:TW after the restart it didn't crash like it did before. So I wrote "-mod:EB" and tried starting the game, but it was the vanilla R:TW that launched anyway (well not entirely vanilla - I couldn't launch the campaign or load previous games).
Even after downloading another copy of the mod setup pack, the copy only gives me the option to Enable mods.
I have also tried downloading the "Europa Barbarorum Data files" from the EB website but it didn't succeed - I'm unable to download it.
I've read above comments about a Read & Write-problem, but I'm not sure that I have that problem since both the RomeData.dmg and the RomeModSetup.dmg are Read & Write for my user - though not for "staff" or "everyone".
I wonder what I should do - to make the mod setup pack work, to add the mod manually? I feel I need some (perhaps very) easily comprehensible instructions on installation.
Appreciate your time.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
I've now understood I got a few things wrong - one need both the EB-files and the Mod-setup (if one doesn't know how to install through the EB-files alone). I thought the files were included in the setup. Anyway I actually got the Mod-setup working after having reinstalled RTW and (which I think was what made it work) convert all files in the context to read & write. Now the problem is that I can't actually get the EB-files to download completely. Is there any alternate site I could download it from?

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
After having made some progress with help from Garouza's (among others) post (#139) in this thread. Now I am experiencing this problem:

it's telling me that there is an invalid installation and the file "data:fmv:rome_title.mov" is missing and that I need to re-install the game. I tried that, and it repeated the problem.

What should I do about that? Please note that my RomeData from Rome Total War.app is read only when it is mounted (is that the problem? How do I make it read/write?), though the Rome Total War.app itself is supposed to be read/write.
I've also tried adding "-nm" to the command, so that it says "-nm-mod:EB" with no luck.
-
Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
I should add that I have a RomeData with original files and a RomeData with EB (and a readwritecheck) in the same "Rome Total War"-folder in Applications. Then I've followed formaldehyde's information but I'm stuck at the problem mentioned in above post.
Sigh...I really think there should be an extensive guide on this. It's disappointing not being able to access a mod such as this.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Thank Internet! I finally actually got to the opening screen. The problem was that I was unable to add the EB-folder to the RomeData.dmg, inside the RTW.app (game is Gold Edition), because the dmg was read only.
So I created a new RomeData.dmg with help from DropDMG (Preferences -> Configurations -> read/write DMG 9 gb), where I put the Data-folder and the BI-folder, from the original RomeData.dmg, together with the EB-folder and bam! It worked.
Then, when trying to start the campaign, I got the problem with "please choose an item from the list". I solved it through jobbysucks's guiding post #91 in this thread.
Thanks everyone, I have been using tips from a lot of posters on several forums to solve this puzzle.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi Everyone,
I am in the process of fixing the scripts for installing mods in Rome so they work with the Mac AppStore and the DVD / Digital Releases. One of our servers HD's died so the mods are currently down but they will be back up again shortly with a new url. Will post here once that is up and running again.
-
Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
OK, thanks for the heads-up ~:thumb: .

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi All,
I have fixed the issues reported with the Mac App Store and the uploads have completed. Please note the links are now all in new locations.
http://downloads.feralinteractive.co...meModSetup.dmg - Sets up and installs mods
http://downloads.feralinteractive.co...talRealism.dmg - EB Data this has not been updated just a new url location.
If you have the mod data you have no need to redownload all the fixes are in the Setup mod link.
Cheers,
Edwin

Hi, I used a App Store version. I might have done it in the same time Edwin updated the installer, so I would have either old issue or remaining ones.
Here is the issues and how I fixed them
- App Store installed files are owned by root. The installer script write error in the terminal in the beginning (and continue..)
so I'll have to stop it (spamming Ctrl-C in the terminal) and fix the permissions with
Code:
sudo chown $(id -u) /Applications/Rome\ Total\ War.app
(and typing my password)
Maybe a more elegant fix would do the job as well.
- Then whatever I did, it crashed after the first red screen. I eventually figured it works only in English (my RTW is localised in French). I then switched the language from "Automatic" to "English". Maybe you can add something in the video about this.
- Lastly, It refused to start a new campaign. Reading the forum, I mounted the data image, then created links to allow it to run with BI, with this terminal commands:
Code:
ln -s imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt /Volumes/RomeData/EB/Data/text/barbarian_invasion_regions_and_settlement_names.txt
ln -s imperial_campaign /Volumes/RomeData/EB/Data/world/maps/campaign/barbarian_invasion
Finally it's working. Thank you very much for the setup image; it was very helpful.

I was sure all the commands that needed sudo were already are covered in the script but I could have missed one. I have updated the script to request sudo as soon as it starts the Mac App Store conversion just in case so you no longer need to do this. For those interested I just embedded the above command into the script at the correct place.

There is now a warning in the script on launch for this as well.

You don't need to do this, in fact it will likely cause side effects in your Rome games. You just need to go to the about panel and select "Barbarian Invasion" as the game before launching, this causes the mod to load in BI mode without needing to damage your data files.
I also added a warning about this in the install script.
The new version of the ModSetup dmg is uploading now (1.2.1) and will be available to download in the next few hours.
Thanks for the feedback.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
I edwin, after infinite failures i downloaded your latest version of mode setup. i was very pleased because the installation was ok, all the messages was positive (EB succeffully installed and so on). then i followed your instructions, english, BI, -mod:EB and then... the same result i've experienced before!
no EB loading screen, no imperial campaign (message: select an item), imperial campaign starting with provincial campaign... nothing more than Vanilla.
i play with appstore version.
any suggestion?

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
I followed all of jobbysucks's instructions, but when I try to access the campaign map it links it back to the Main page. What should I do?

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi All,
I have a new 1.2.2 beta of Rome in testing, would anyone like to help test it? I have also gotten the mod to work 100% reliably using this new beta thanks to some feedback from the users in this thread.
Interested people should email terry.ester@feralinteractive.com, bonus points if people get the joke.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi, am using your EB version for mac, I did everything, but when I double click the RomeData Script, the Terminal window opens and this text appears:
************************************************
** Checking Rome is installed in Applications **
************************************************
***********************************************
** Check if RomeData is already Read Write **

/dev/disk4 Apple_partition_scheme
/dev/disk4s1 Apple_partition_map
/dev/disk4s2 Apple_HFS /Volumes/RomeData 1
touch: readwritecheck: Read-only file system

[Opération terminée]
What should I do? Thank you very much for your help!!

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
A few things changed with the OS so if you want an installer you wil have to wait for the new patch for the game (and the updated script). Else you can attempt a manual installation in the meantime.
We do have some spaces left on the Rome beta if you are interested.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
I've been trying to install EB for the past day. I have RTW Gold Edition with just one game icon that has both RTW and BI and romedata.
Does anyone have a step by step guide for installing it? I tried using the script but when it gets to installing EB it says it can't copy the files do to the directory not being there.
-
Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
What version do you have?
What script are you trying to use?
Where did you dowmload it from?
Also finally EB has some issues which will be fixed in a patch, I am handing out public beta access to the patches if anyone would like to test.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
I figured it out and I can confirm that I am able to play EB through BI and can save the game etc. here is what I did:
Step 1:
- Mount RomeData found in your Rome Total War folder under Applications.
- Copy both folders(Data and BI) from the mounted RomeData on to your desktop(this step is just copying the contents of the mounted RomeData into the Desktop
-Unmount RomeData once the steps above are done.
Step 2
- Create a new IMG by going to disk utility and clicking the icon "new img", you should have a screen as follows:
http://i49.tinypic.com/qs2sms.jpg
-use the same settings as above but for "colume size" I used 10gb enough room for EB and RTRE. Make sure that the name of the new img and volume name are both RomeData.
-click create and wait for it to finish
-No take the new RomeData IMG that you just made and copy it into the Rome Total War applications folder. This should replace the old one.
- Mount the NEW RomeData IMG
- Copy both Data and BI from your desktop into RomeData
Step 3:
- Mount your EB dmg
- Copy EB folder into your New RomeData IMG(same place you just copied Data and BI folders)
After you do that follow these steps:
Quote:
-Make a copy of Rome Data\EB\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign and renamed it barbarian_invasion
-Make a copy of Rome Data\EB\Data\text\imperial_campaign_regions_and_se ttlement_names.txt and renamed it barbarian_invasion_regions_and_settlement_names.tx t
-Delete Rome Data\EB\Data\world\maps\base\map.rwm
- Also go to RomeData/EB/Data/world/maps/campaign/barbarian_invasion/descr_strat.txt and open it with textedit
at the top it will say "Campaign Imperial_Campaign"
change "Imperial_Campaign" to "Barbarian_Invasion" without the quotes. Save it.
Step 4
- Launch the game; remember to go to the "advanced option tab" and put in -mod:EB
it takes a minute or two for the whole game to load (atleast it did for me) if you get the splash screen that says Europa Barbarorum just wait.
-
Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Thank you immensely, that procedure worked. The game still has a few issues, like the missing voices, but I hope the next patch will resolve that.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hello Edwin
I'm also trying to install EB on my MacBook 2010. I downloaded the game from the Apple app store and downloaded the romemodsetup and EB.dmg files from the EB site. Tried to follow the instructions but came unstuck when the video appeared different to what I have on my screen. Do you have a link for specifically app store downloaded games? Thanks

Won't Load Campaign or Battles
Hello Total War players,
This is my first post on the site, though I have been a frequent reader and a guest for a while and a player for many years. I've always been quite happy with Vanilla RTW, but recently decided to try something new. I'm using the Gold Edition version of RTW published by Feral Interactive for Mac, and while my laptop is 4-5 years old it runs the game perfectly well. I decided to try the Mac version of Europa Barbarorum and followed the video and readme instructions as best I could (the script didn't do anything for me so I had to make a read-write copy myself with Disk Utility). I got it to load and everything absolutely fine, but when I click on "EB Main Campaign" I get the "Choose an Item from the List" box and can't go forward. I left the game and deleted the map.rwm file-- same problem. To make things more confusing, the game wouldn't launch custom battles either-- I could select armies, but when I clicked the enter game button, it sent me back to the panel where the player chooses the factions. I deleted the whole mod setup, created a new read-write RomeData, redownloaded EB, reinstalled it-- same problem. Can anyone help me?!
Thanks so much!
(PS-- same exact problem when I tried modding with Mundus Magnus instead)

Unusual launch crash...
Ok, so I'm running Mac OSX 10.6.8, and have just downloaded Rome Total Realism and E. Barbarorum mods, both for mac.
The version of Rome I have is the gold edition off the App Store, and it is entirely up to date.
I ran the script to allow Rome to run mods, and it went completely to plan. My account is an admin account and I had more than enough space. The only unexpected thing was having to enter my password to allow the script to continue operating. Apart from that, smooth as silk.
So I did as the instruction asked and simply typed -mod:EB into the 'advanced' window, whereupon it refused to start and cited the following reason:
'RTW could not be run because the file "data:fmv:rome_title.mov" is missing from the installation.
I took that to mean the intro video which always plays when the game is booted up. I then discovered it also refuses to play the original game, as well as BI, and Realism. It also has 'locked' my video preferences and does not allow me to choose anything other that 640x400 resolution for the battles and campaign map.
I then tried to do so manually, i.e. move the EB and TR files into the RomeData directory, but again, same issue, and no joy.
Help?

Re: Unusual launch crash...
The problem with Apple is they think they know what is better for you than you do.
This is fine for the tech ignorant masses who are in awe of the touch screen IPod, IPhone, and IPad even though Xerox copiers had touch screen technology since 1979. But it sucks for anyone else, including you apparently.
I wish I could help, but my only suggestion is to install Windows and play EB.
-
Re: Unusual launch crash...
Oh trust me, I'm not a Mac fan anymore. I used to be, when I first got this thing a few years ago. Now I hate it. First thing I'm doing at the end of summer is shifting straight to a fairly powerful Windows laptop running 7 64bit.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi Edwin,
I've downloaded 1.3 and Managed to add EB to the bundle, but I can't successfully save a game...I've changed the bundle permissions to read/write....but I still can't save. It says "Save Failed - Can't Write Save File to Disk" -- Any ideas anyone? FYI, Vanilla saves fine, maybe it has to do with where EB saves files? Please help. thanks

Don't use the Finder to alter permissions it will not alter the files inside the bundle which are the ones you need to modify.
1. Open Terminal (in Utilities)
2. Type the following (without quotes but with the extra space at the end).
"sudo chmod -R 777 "
3. Then drag the Rome application into the window and release. It should look something like this.
sudo chmod -R 777 /Applications/Rome\ Total\ War.app
4. Press enter then enter your admin password, it will not appear when you type, once done press enter.
5. Once it completes try the game again.

Are you using the Mac App Store sandboxed version of the game? Apple have loads of wonderful anti modding restrictions in the AppStore. :(

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi Edwin.
Firstly, I'd like to say thanks for taking the time to port this wonderful mod to the mac. Truly made my day.
However, I'm having trouble getting it to install. I just got the latest version of RTW for the mac (1.3, I believe). This version does not have a RomeData.dmg anywhere that I can see. It only has one application called R:TW - Gold Edition. Because of this the RomeData script cant find the proper files that it needs to. Is there a way that you know of to manually install EB, or am I just missing something?

Is this Mac App Store or download/DVD?
Mac App Store version cannot save progress due to Apple rules on Sandbox security even if you install the current mod. If the mod is altered from a mod: switch to a standard mod it will likely allow saving as the save files will be inside the game container folder as per Apple rules not inside the game data.
None App Store copies don't have any of these issues as we don't need to strictly follow Apple's rules for the Mac App Store.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi all, and especially Edwin
Hats off to Feral for releasing such an extensive update to a game they've already had out for so long! It's great work and really appreciated.
Unfortunately it's screwed my Europa Barbarorum use, though - I can't save anymore! No matter what I try (and I think I've tried all the old fixes for the problem) I still just get 'Failed to Write to Disk' when I try to save the game. Autosave doesn't work either.
It makes playing the game impossible. I'd really love some help from you or anyone on how to fix this - Europa Barbarorum is the reason I still play Rome Total War!

Hi Edwin, thanks very much for above and I understand you're busy (sorry).
Being something of a doofus, I dont really understand what you mean. How do I switch to a 'standard mod', and how can I know if my mod is an 'altered' mod? All I have done is downloaded Europa Barbarorum and tried to install it.
Sorry to be dumb, but I'm 31 years old and much as I used to be computer literate when I was younger I feel technology gradually running away from me.

Currently all of EB is contained in a folder called EB. If you look inside you will find it is just a collection of files in folders laid out exactly like the main game data folder. If you move all the EB files into the correct location inside the main game data folder if you start up the standard game it will load EB not Rome.
As the game thinks it is running Rome not EB it will use the (Apple allowed) Rome save game location allowing you to save your progress. However this will take a little trial and error to get right.
The Mac App Store runs by Apple's rules and modding is tricky with all the codesigning and security rules Apple demand for MAS releases. I will see if I can get an Apple store compatible version in the future so you don't have to do all this manually.

Thanks for all the work porting EB. It really makes an excellent game out of the RTW engine.
I've been tinkering and figuring out how to do what you describe above. So far, I merged the EB directory into the original data one, overwriting the original files. (Really merged, not mac-replaced).
I opened the preference folder from the startup dialogue and found that many of the EB subfolders that are not in the "data" directory are there... Those that were not I put there anyway for lack of a better option.
I got to the screen where you choose your faction, making the computer think EB is the original... and then CTD.
Any advice would be very welcome.

I don't have anything concrete just need to work through the errors, I am sure the CTD is a missing/incorrect file path issue that might need some minor data tweaking.
http://rtw.heavengames.com/rtw/mods/...ne/index.shtml
This page is handy specifically enable the -show_err command so you can see what errors happen before CTD and fix them. With the Empire patch and Napoleon coming I am pretty busy but...
For NONE Mac App Store players I have updated EB to install and run without errors and hosted it on the Feral modding area. I have also written an update script that will convert any users with the older RomeData.dmg to start using the Data folder inside the Application instead which makes modding a lot easier.
I also fixed the Rome Total Realism Mac mod and added a new mod "Fourth Age". All three mods have issues with saving progress in MAS versions. The none playable factions mod is compatible with the MAS release unlike the other mods.

Thanks for responding and for all that great work bringing these games to mac users.
I tried running the -show_err command from the "advanced" tab on the start-up menu, but no message displayed after the CTD. Just to double check I was in the right place, I used -nm, which did work.
Does -show_err not work on a mac? Is it possible to generate a log some other way?
Understand you are very busy. No hurries.
If I manage to save an EB game, I will post the solution here.

So I downloaded EB from the directory you have listed there and I tried to install using the installer and got this:
*******************************************
* Europa Barbarorum Mod *

** Checking Rome is installed in Applications **
************************************************
***********************************************
** Please upgrade to Rome v1.3 or later **
** This script only works with v1.3+ **

I have never even had any other versions of RTW on this mac besides 1.3 so why is it not recognizing it? It does the same thing when I run any of the mod installers including the RomeModSetup. And, no, I do not have the app store version, I have the direct downloaded version that I got off of feral's website.

Run the conversion script on the site then re-run the mod installer. It sounds very much like you have an older version of the data (RomeData.dmg) that has not been converted for modding yet.
You need to run the script in the new "RomeModSetup" installer to convert your game over to using the new Data packs. Please note all these scripts insist you have installed the game into the Applications folder and you have not used any sub folders or renamed anything.
In your case you should have a folder called Rome Total War and inside the folder the Rome applications and the RomeData.dmg data file. The important script to test is the RomeModSetup without running that your data will not be ready for modding.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
ARGH frustrating. I had just finished explaining my progress getting EB to save games on the app store version when my post got lost. All I got back were a couple of lines.
Let me briefly recap:
Presently, the problem is that the App store version only lets you save in the designated "saves" folder in the RTW preferences folder. EB, however, has a different notion and has its own save folder. The app store version just won't let you save there.
Following Edwin, I am trying to make RTW run EB as if it were vanilla. This has meant merging the data folder in EB into the vanilla data folder. Then moving the custom/preferences/presets/saves folders from EB into the RTW preferences folders accessed from the startup menu.
This gets me as far as the faction selection screen, but as soon as I select and press the arrow, CTD. It is interesting that it crashes before you even hear the "steel upon steel" sound when you press the arrow... Could it mean that the problem is related to sound files?
Edwin suggested it might be missing files or incorrect paths, so I took some time to make sure things in the merged EB/data folder were where they should be, as far as I can tell. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to make -show_err run on a mac.
I am a bit stumped now, and my illiterate thinking is that:
a) EB is asking RTW to look for some files where they would be if we were running from the EB folder - are there "master files" that tell EB where to look for resources?
b) RTW does not bother to look for certain files/folders unless it is running with -mod. When running with -mod, it evidently gives priority to the preferences/presets/saves/custom files in the mod folder rather than those in the preferences folder.
Two items continue to intrigue me: what does ebignoreList.txt in EB/Validation do? What about "sp game edu backup"? Why are those files there?
Anyone's wisdom and ideas would be very welcome. I know the Ferals are busy.

-show_err just needs to be added to the advanced options as written here. If a file is missing or cannot be found a dialog will appear with the details of what file cannot be found and where it was looking for it.
a) That's likely, it could be one of the modding files has hard coded links in it, I would perhaps use EasyFind (handy application) to look through all the text files for any file patches with EB in them.
b) On the PC all save games are saved in the game data folder! For the Mac we modified the main game (in the code) to save in the preferences folder however mods still use the other location, if you could get the game to use the containers folder this would be solved, however that's proving tricky to do without patching.
That said I just had a sneaky idea, I will try it later today if I have time.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
SOLVED IT FOR MAC APP STORE!!!!
Hi All,
If you have the Mac App Store version do the following:
1. Install EB mod as usual and check it loads correctly etc.
2. Quit Rome and open the Rome preferences container folder using the button in the pre game about tab.
3. Copy (not a Shortcut it has to be copy) Rome (with the mod installed) into the Rome preferences folder in the top level.
4. Launch the game from inside the Preferences folder.
5. You can now save successfully with mods.
I will try and get this all cleaned up into the installer scripts but for now this method works. For those interested Apple sandboxing states you can only have Read/Write permissions for your application inside your application specific containers folder inside the Library folder. This folder is usually used for save games, preferences etc. By placing the entire game inside the folder as well it means the game has Read/Write permissions on itself which is required for some mods to work.
Simples ;)

Brilliant. Technically, we are saving the game in the preferences folder. Thanks so much! Can't wait to get some of your other ports.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi Edwin. Just wanted to drop in and thank you for working so hard on a really niche issue. Also, general thanks to Feral for having great CS. I sent you guys an email asking about the phalanx bug and you were kind enough to shoot back a very specific answer, and even update me when the patch was ready. Top notch stuff.
quick question though: when you say "install EB as usual", under 1.3 MAS version, does that mean merging all the EB files into the Rome data folders etc? What further steps need to be done to get EB working like this, seeing as the MAS version now lacks the data.dmg?

Mac EB mod download on the feral site comes with instructions inside the "Read Me FIRST!!!" document ;)
"Manual Install
Place the EB folder inside the in the following location "Rome Total War.app/Contents/Resources/Data/data/ folder and then use the "-mod:EB" (no quotes) in the advanced tab to enable the mod in the game. "
After you have done that move the entire application inside the containers as I described above. I have a working updated script here that does all this automatically but i have yet to package it and upload to the modding area as I have been busy on Napoleon Total War and other projects this week. Will try and get the upload done before the weekend if I get a chance.
Edwin
p.s. Thanks for all the kind words.

Ah, I was looking at the pre 1.3 version of the mod! Thanks, that clears everything up.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
From what I've seen on this thread, I haven't run across a solution to this issue:
Before R:TW was updated via the MAS in May, EB was working perfectly fine for me -- however, after the update, the game will not launch EB at all.
I've looked through the files and everything is still in the right place. Even with "-mod:EB" entered into the Advanced tab, it still launches straight to vanilla R:TW. Barbarian Invasion will not even launch when selected.
I've toyed around with it a bit but I'm hoping there may be some other solution out there before I have to wipe everything and reinstall it. Any ideas?

Have you read the posts? :p The last 5 or 6 posts if not the last few pages are all related to instructions on how to play on the MAS version (1.3) with step by step instructions. I have linked you to the posts and instructions below to save your fingers from scrolling :)

If you have been "toying with it" I recommend you delete and reinstall even a single file out of place can cause a crash so to avoid issues caused by incorrect data a reinstall is prudent. Before deleting Rome I would backup any EB saves you have inside the EB folder. Once you have backed up your EB saves and deleted both EB and Rome follow the steps below to install.
Install Rome.
Download the latest EB mod from the Rome modding area on the Feral website.
Follow the manual install instructions from this post just above this one.
Follow the MAS specific steps you need to take in this post further up the page

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Alright -- thank you. Am I just copying "Rome Total War.app" to the Preferences folder after I've installed EB?

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Success! I guess I didn't realize there was an updated version of the mod on Feral's website but not on the EB site.
Thank you so much for the help. Looking forward to Napoleon!

I guess I need to remind them of the new location when I updated it for 1.3 :)
Enjoy!

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi edwin,
First off thanks for all your great work on this. You really have helped (unknowingly) a computer fool like me to get the most out of the game. Just a could of queries.
Firstly for multiplayer. I have the cd version of the game but in games ranger I can participate in games but cannot host. The gamesranger for app doesn't work for me, is there something else I need to download?
Secondly viz. The fourth age mod. It immediately ctd after the load up screen when I run it. i have downloaded loads of other mods and many of them have done this and only a couple of them (e.g the greek wars) worked. Is there something specific I need to do? I just unpack them and slot them into the rtw data file at present and away it goes?
Thanks for your time.

That is a port forwarding issue with your router and GameRanger. Let me try to explain.
A host (server) need to be contactable directly by the client players. Being a client only requires you to be able to send out messages to the server (and get reply messages). To be a host (server) you need to not only be able to get reply messages but also accept direct messages. If you are behind a home router these messages need to be forwarded to the right local machine.
For replies that easy as it has the sendersID on the packet but accepting direct messages no sender ID is listed so your modem does not know what Machine on your network to pass the messages onto. Port forwarding rules or more modern modems with automatic port forwarding have made this less likely to happen but depending on your setup and other machines on the network it can occur.
Forwarding port 16000 to your Mac using router settings will usually allow you to host. If you are interested here is some extra reading :)

I ported Fourth Age mod and the hosted version on our mods area works perfectly in Rome 1.3. Remember Fourth Age is a Barbarian Invasion mod as I recall so make sure you Rome set to Barbarian Invasion mode before trying to play.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi Edwin,
First of all sorry for my bad english,
I own the MAS version of the game and I'd like to tell you that you and Feral did an amazing work on this game to make it playable on Mac.
I'd like to install EB so I followed your last instructions, installed EB in Rome Total War.app/Contents/Resources/Data/data/ and then I have to copy the application in the preferences folder, but I didn't understand if you mean the one that opens when I hit the "Open Preferences Folder" button (which is called "Rome Total War") or the one that is called "preferences" and which is inside the "Rome Total War" folder, or another folder. I tried to copy the app in the two folders but it didn't work in the two cases.
Thanks once again

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Greetings,
I'm running into a rather unusual problem when starting up the latest EB game. The game starts up normally and gets me to the main menu and allows me to click single player. But whenever I click on the EB campaign button (i.e. to send me to the faction selection screen) a notice pops up saying "Please select an option from the menu" Basically it seems like this button is not working as all the other buttons (custom battles, load saved game, etc...) work fine. Please help so I can get back to playing the wonder that is EB for Mac!!!
Best,
Nathaniel

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi
I downloaded the installer but whenever I click on EB main campaign it says "please select an item from the list"
I have tried multiple things to get it fixed but it won't work
please help.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi Edwin
First of all, I like to thank you so much for your support and CS that has allowed me to play EB on the mac in the past. Also, congrats on the successful release of Napoleon TW for mac. I was hoping that I might ask for a minute of your time to fix a EB mac issue that many people still seem to be having (based on my own experiences and several numerous posts in this thread). I am referring to my previous post where I mentioned that I was able to get the EB mod started but was unable to start a new campaign as the phrase "please select an item from the list" would pop up. I have looked through this entire thread and tried each and every solution to no avail (including reinstillation, replacing imperial_campaign files with barbarian_invasion) etc. . . I am running a digital download copy of the game downloaded from feral although I was having this problem with my CD copy as well. Please Help if you can!!!
Thanks!

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Are you using the new mod link from here?
I fixed that a while ago as I recall.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
My RTW vanilla stopped working for a bit but I think I fixed it
-
Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi Edwin,
Ok I figured out why the vanilla wasn't working, i still had -mod:EB in the advanced options but not EB mod installed. Woops! So I got the vanilla Rome Total War to work at version 1.3! The problem I am still encountering however is whenever I run the rome_mod_setup.command (downloaded from your link) or the rome total realism setup.command or even the EB setup command, I get this message
*******************************************
* Welcome to the Rome Mod Installer *
*********** 1.3.0 ***********

************************************************
** Checking Rome is installed in Applications **
************************************************
***********************************************
** Please upgrade to Rome v1.3 or later **
** This script only works with v1.3+ **
***********************************************
So basically although my RTW version is 1.3 (information obtained through right-clicking on RTW and clicking "get info" although when i go in the game, it does not show a version in the bottom corner, but in the options menu it shows "ver 1.6" in the upper right corner. Therefore, I have no clue what the problem is! I cannot initiate any of the mod installations since they claim that I haven't updated, but I cannot update because the game seems to think that my version is 1.3 already! Please help!
Let me know if you need any screenshots or my computer specifics and Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Greetings all. First off, thanks to Edwin for working on this. Second, I'm a computer moron so please speak to me as such. Third, apologies if my question has been answered elsewhere. I can't get EB to launch. I've tried to run the mod setup, and I didn't get any error messages, but the process took about 15 seconds instead of the 15 minutes the video suggests.

I've tried to do a fresh install of RTW with no effect. I've tried manually copying the EB files into RomeData, but it acts like the folder is write protected, and I'm not sure how to change that. I've tried rebuilding my data image, nada. I have RomeData, EB, and RomeModSetup all mounted. I'm using the "-mod:EB" command in the advanced options and I have RomeShell enabled. No matter what I do, the game starts up in vanilla. Am I missing something? Like I said, I'm a moron, so I'm sure it's something obvious. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
EDIT: Yes, this is a problem. The mounted RomeData image is read only. How can I change that, or am I SOL?

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi,
Thanks for all the work put in on trying to make this work. Unfortunately, I cannot make EB work. I am using MAS and have followed the instructions closely. I
o deleted everything—including preferences and the application
o downloaded and installed a fresh copy of RTW from MAS
o downloaded a fresh copy of EB from the Feral site linked above
o made sure RTW runs correctly
o copied the EB folder from the dmg into Rome Total War.app/Contents/Resources/Data/data
o attempted to run EB by opening RTW and placing -mod:EB into the advanced box (with the check)
After all that, everything loads as if I'm running RTW normally except that clicking on "Imperial Campaign" gives me the error that I need to select an item from the list and a new "Provincial Campaign" option appears, which contains a working version of the vanilla RTW campaign.
I tried to fix the problem myself by trying some things in response to what I've read but don't completely understand:
o used chmod to set permissions on everything inside of Contents folder to 777 (sudo chmod -r 777 Contents) (did nothing)
o went ahead and copied the .app folder into the Preferences folder, which I accessed from the "Open preferences folder" button on the launcher (did nothing)
So, what am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.
I can make screenshots if desired.

+1 to everything euknemarchon said. Did a fresh install of RTW from MAS and got the fresh copy of EB from Edwin's link above, pasted EB into Rome Total War.app/Contents/Resources/Data/data/ and I got the same vanilla loadout and same Imperial Campaign error.

EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hello Edwin@Feral. Thanks in advance for all of the help and good info in this thread. I've been trying to get the mods working on my mac for two days now, and nothing. Tried all the old stuff and new stuff. Not sure if I have failed too many times, and have just gone braindead by now. It looks like everything loaded correctly (although it only took two seconds to load) but when i go to the preference folder I dont see anything. What am I missing? I appreciate the help.
