Yup - thats an intro. movie - no in-game screenshots there at all. The only original in-game screenshots so far are those on the German website and in the posts above by Yas Terazawa and Seljuksinan
hmm not sure like I said. But I think they are in game at the moment, subject to review when PC Gamer comes out. Can any of the Swede PC Gamers scan and post some pictures please ?

Hey guys
I am new to the forum and I really enjoy the discussions here. Here are a few points from the 6 page long article in PC Gamer Sweden:
New engine called the Total-War2 engine (very original) that according to CA has a better framerate than the releaseversion of MTW in this early build. Sounds too good be true?
More than 5000 soldiers on screen.
Siegeoptions such as: ladders, catapults, siege towers, rams, ballistae, boiling oil, tunnel digging, fire arrows can set fire to certain buildings inside the city, fight can take place on the walls.
Soldiers can now hide in buildings for better protection.
Races include: Romans, barbarians, Cartago, Egypt, “Easterners”.
New units such as elephants (screenshots shows both unarmoured and armoured ones), dogs of war, battle wagons drawn by horses with knives on the wheels, spartans, “headhurlers” that apparently throws decapitated heads at the enemy, there is also a mentioning of burning pigs whatever that means.
Landscapes as large as 32x32km.
Buildings erected in the strategic map will be depicted on the tactical map.
Historical campaigns will include amongst others: Hannibal, Spartacus and Julius Caesar.
No official release yet, PC gamer Sweden guesses around summer 2004.
Battles can be fought during night.
Swe Gamer Welcome to the org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif .
Thx very much for the details.
Wud it be possible to scan and post some of the screenies. I have some webspace if u need it. Pop me a mail on katsujin_ken@hotmail.com and i d be happy to help. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ns/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif

Yaaay - siege towers at last there's a whole load of em up against the walls of that city. Looks like a nice model of an amphitheatre in the city too

Pardon the interruption folks, but I must take the opportunity to welcome swe_gamer, Bizz and Bubbafett to the Org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...icons/wave.gif Thanks for dropping by and joining us.
Taken from that same website...
Clearly, the elephant had the ability to provoke fear in the enemy even if in reality the beast was an unpredictable weapon. Hannibal knew of this psychological effect as Pliny relates an account which declares that “Hannibal pitted a Roman prisoner against an elephant, and this man, having secured a promise of his freedom if he killed the animal, met it single-handed in the arena and much to the chagrin of the Carthaginians dispatched it. Hannibal realized that reports of this encounter would bring the animals into contempt, so he sent horsemen to kill the man as he was departing (VIII, I.16).” Obviously Hannibal was trying to protect the gruesome reputation of his living weapons.
What a D|CK Hannibal was That poor POW fought off an elephant only to have some assassin lop his head off as he began on the long road home. Regardless of his tactical and strategic prowess Hannibal obviously wasn't very familiar with the dynamics of human psychology. Who the hell would believe a Roman POW's story about killing an elephant in the arena?
Can you imagine if that POW survived to tell the tale?
Fibbicus: Thank Jupiter I was able to bring the beast down by my own hands
Doubticus: Right...
Fibbicus: No really, I did
Doubticus: Sure...
Gossipicus: Hmmm, I know an Athenian merchant who told me that his brother's best friend's mother in-law's gardener heard a story about a Roman captive killing an elephant in one of Carthage's arena.
Fibbicus: Yes, yes That was ME
Doubticus: Bah
Fibbicus: You calling me a liar?
Doubticus: Gah
Gossipicus: Oh dear...
Fibbicus: Oh yeah? You want a piece of me? I will BURY you
Doubticus: Bring it
The movie trailer of this game reminds me of Kingdom Under Fire 2 by phantagram for the xbox.
Although Total War is much larger in scope.
Looking forward to both late this year http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif
Whoops, I forgot to comment on the game info...
The new engine may sound too good to be true but I see no reason why it shouldn't have a better framerate than its predecessor. As far as I know the thousands of sprites on the screen in STW and MTW are NOT being accelerated via the hardware on your 3D card. The only 3D objects being rendered on screen in MTW are those comprising the terrain, wildlife (birds) and the trees, implying that many 3D cards' capabilities are going unused. I believe Rome TW will be the first TW game to take complete advantage of any and all 3D horsepower your 3D card can muster. I also have no doubt that the TW2 engine will aggressively scale the number of polygons on the screen to allow for epic struggles consisting of thousands of men. If I am wrong then I sincerely hope someone from CA can clarify this.Quote:

Since everything about Rome TW seems bigger and better I sincerely hope they increased the number of units you can command on the battlefield above 16. It would be nice to see them increase the limit to 20. I also hope they got rid of the 959 man stacking limit.
If the Rome TW engine is as kick ass as everyone hopes it will be then it would be a crying shame not to have a few ambitious and intrepid modders attempt to bring Medieval over to the new engine.
Summer 2004?? SUMMER 2004?? They must be joking, right? Didn't the German site say sometime in 3rd Quarter 2003?
Yeah that is what it said. I was wondering how they could crank this out so fast. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/joker.gifQuote:

Thanks for the offer SeljukSinan, unfortunately I don´t have a scanner available, but most of the pics from the mag have already been posted. If there is any other Swedish member who could post these I think a lot of people would appreciate it.
The mapsize 32x32km might be correct, some of the pics look HUGE. Another note from the article in PC Gamer Sweden: there will be two ways of controlling your troops on the battlefield. One is more like in a normal strategy game (probably like in AOK and similar games) and the other is based on the controlmethod from MTW.
I think it's time for a small refresher considering the questions asked in the lobby and emails. here is a list of everything in one page.
This is how this thread started, thx to Shurakin

The Next TW Game will be Rome TW as i saw it today in the new issue of GameStar, a german PC Journal
On the DVD is a Trailer of the Game where some Romans fighting some Celts or other Barbarians.
The Battles seem to be complete 3D all Warriors are motion captured Polgons.
In the Journal is a short Preview (1 Page), with 3 screenshots, 1. fleeing light armored Romans, after them a Warelephant, 2. some roman cohorts marching on a plain, 3. some Romans attack a castle with leaders.

couple answers in the video im almost positive those are celts well Picts more likely. Terrain(just a guess) is in calodian(present day souther scotland) and there picts obviously and not germanics because they have the woad painted bodys on which celts and picts were famous for. If picts the land in the intro movie would make sense.....highlands:)
Not sure if germanics wore torcs or not bbut celts forsure did(torcs are the neckalce type ritual things on there necks)
the formation people call turtle is calles 'Testudo' but who gives a s**t.

A few notes:
The testudo was not used this way (mostly to storm a stronghold, or to shelter for serious missile fire)
The legionaires always had 1 or 2 javelins (pilum) to throw at their enemy before close combat.
The Ben Hur like tribune or legate would never be in front of the army.
The auxiliary archers didn't wear the steel legionairy helmet (a cheaper bronze helmet instead)

BURNING PIGS
These are excerps from the manual of Hannibal great battles series. Hope they help to explain what burning pigs where used for.
Elephants where anti-cavalry units. Horses disliked elephants intensely; getting one to go near an elephant was a task requiring much skill and patience (...)
(...) By this time(3rd c. BC), the sight of elephants on a battlefield was fairly common – to everybody, that is, except the Romans. Alexander’s descendants – the diadochi – had fallen in love with them, and trained elephant corps were standard throughout the wars of Ptolemy, Seleucus, etc. The Romans, however, had not yet encountered them when Pyrrhus arrived with his 20+ behemoths at Heraclea. The result was typical: the Roman cavalry had a collective coronary and the Roman infantry didn’t wait around long enough to see their EKG’s. By the time of Hannibal, however, the Romans were pretty much used to them and had devised some ingenious methods of negating their abilities(...)
(...) War Elephants were pretty much impervious to anything – except sharp, pointy objects and loud, strange noises. They also tended to have a mind of their own when annoyed, which often happened when confronted with those same sharp, pointy objects and strange sounds (...)
(...) also the flexibility of the Roman legion system eventually negated their advantages, leaving them with a host of disadvantages, which doomed them as relics.

Hmm.
Sounds a lot like the game the company I work for has been working on.
We're still going to use 2d sprites for our units though (although we're using motion capture for animation too), and our world goes all the way out to india and china. Competing with CA will certainly be a challenge

I'm also a fan of the Total War series, and I have Shogun and Medieval (not Mongol Invasion)
And when we're talkin about games, I've been waiting for Roman warfare games for ages. I've already got Legion and the leaked Praetorians demo (which Eidos released and pulled back when Pyro said it was leaked and unfinished)... so far Praetorians has been the only game I've played which let's me to the Testudo.
btw that Strength and Honor game looks awesome http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif.. can't wait, tell you're publishers to sell it cheap
Hello there, I´ve been reading the forums for somme time, but now I want to post my own oppinion. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...icons/wave.gif
@SeljukSinan: Why do you want fog of war? In my oppinion it would ruin the great view you have over the whole battlefield. One of the best aspects of the Total war games is that they are close to realism and this includes the unlimited field of view.
@all the ones who can´t use the link to the video:this one could be an alternative: http://www.gamestar.hu/downloads.php3?op=visit&lid=2053 .
My 2 cents as of now:
The AI needs to be superb. Because now, in the campaign, there will be no Golden Horde that comes from the east and destroys with it's greater numbers. Instead, it will be Hannibal, who in order to be fearsome to the Roman player, must be the most tactically sound AI general in the game. He's gotta be smart.
I personally would have loved TW look at the Napoleonic era for great battles. Hope they get around to it. American Civil War wouldn't be bad either.
Fast, when i clicked on that link,it showed a blank page and automatically started 2 download some files on to my hard, can those for who the link work tell me what are those files? and why are they automatically startin the download to my hdd??Quote:

You could start by shooting him in the foot. That won't get you a 100Mb demo, but it will teach him not to spread rumours, as long as you explain up front that you're only doing it for that reason.Quote:

Well, although I doubt it exists, if it DOES, you ought to be able to find it on Direct Connect. I tried searching on some of my hubs that I usually head to (they typically have most available files on the internet), but couldn't find ANYTHING called Rome Total War, or anything outside of Medieval or Shogun in Total War. Unless you see real proof of such a demo, don't believe what they tell you.Quote:

Eh, Cossacks wouldn't be competition as it is a different type of game. In Cossacks (as other RTSes), you build up resources, then build units, then conquer your enemies. In MTW, you collect money... then build... then conq... ah, nevermind. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/joker.gif
But seriously, they are different types of games that appeal to different play styles. (And who says you can't have both?)
Area 51 i think u mean...... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...ons/smokin.gif
Cossacks... cossacks engine is old, everyone plays American Conquest now (based on cossacks engine, developed by same people)
Yes, but as already said it plays very different.
But perhaps Gil can tell us if/when there will be a Demo of RTW?
I cant wait for the demo but since the demo for MTW didnt come out till June 26. So if what they say comes true and the game comes out lets say in August then we are goin to have to wait at least 3 months till a rlease of a demo of some kind.
They (CA) are evil for creating such a beautiful game, this game looks to fine to run on any of my computers and I have gotten three new last year all over 2,0 GHZ and GE 3-4 ti graphics, this looks like somthing that will need 3GHZ and GEFX cards and probably like a GB of RAM. Does any of theese papers or websites state anything about what kind of computer that is needed to run the game?
Cossacks was a terrible game. It's good at pumping out units, but just like any other AOE clone, the units become dissorganized and requires to much micro. Plus the sound sucks and the graphics are bland, units dont stay in formation, etc.
I stopped playing that game the day I got it.
I think your comps would run it just fine... besides, we're talking at least nine months ahead in time.. maybe it'll even be released in 2004.Quote:

Wagons with blades???
Boadecea( probably spelt wrong ) was the first to use those wasn't she??... love those barbarians... they were complete bastards. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cg...cons/smile.gif
The screenshots seem to indicate that you can orientate your camera closer to the warriors and at better angles than we have been able to up to now.
32*32 square kilometre maps...either a routing enemy will run a LONG way or the time frame required for a battle will need to be lengthened...could CA be going for a longer battle duration???...imagine the time required to sack a city? where the enemy can hide in buildings and to wipe out the defenders?
Somewhere in the posts, boiling oil was mentioned...definatly a defensive measure...can we, as defenders, have men manning the walls of a castle?.
...I will try to contain my anticipation until Creative Assembly confirm that Rome is the next game to be developed and released...not that I am a sceptic(...just a bastard.)
Another thought...if Gil is not working on the Rome project then what is he working on??? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Doubt it. I reckon this game should be able to run fine on something like 1 GHZ, 64MB graphix GEFORCE4 generation. Most games I have seen always stay behind the industry curve so as to maximise the number of people who can play at current PC standards.
