can you run viking invasion and MTW 1.1 side by side on one hard drive, if so how?
Yes, I believe you can. Just re-install M:TW to another directory. That should do it. If not, you can try uninstalling, reinstalling, making a copy of M:TW v1.1, then installing Vikings on one of the copies, but I don't know if that would work, although I seem to remember doing something like that so I could have a M:TW and Patrician mod both installed at the same time...Quote:

METW for VIKING
I managed to mod the game a little to get the Factions into Viking
Just download the most recent troop mod and all. Then with the troop thing, rename it METW_UNIT_PROD_11 and then play. Its got quite a few bugs and it's not perfect, but you could just expand on this and all and work out the bugs. Just a thing I did. Also just back up the files for it. It may not help but it worked for me. Its got serious bugs but i'm sure you can work it out.

Thanks for the compliments to the METW team.
The map teasers you saw were done by hand in Photoshop using 100's of layers to enable easy shiftings and manipulations of every feature of the "world". As well, about every "straight" PS technique (transparencies, masks, lighting and coloring) we used to make it all look and fit together.
I started with about 200 "panorama map" images as a foundation or "quarry" to build the geographic features. I then clothed the bare rocks with my texture library (foresty greens, mossy browns, rocky plains, sandy deserts, wavy beaches, etc).
All of these starting images were taken from personal photos or photos and paintings online, then cut apart or clone-stamped (in PS) into the relevant M.E. terrain.
I strictly followed the proportions and topography from the maps drawn and published by Christopher Tolkien to keep as close to JRR's intended geography as possible.
However, do not hold your breath. The map may not look like the teasers AT ALL, in the end. In fact there may be a much simpler MTW-style look instead. We'll see.

Hobbits are 99.99% out. We have 8 factions budgeted, and Hobbits are not one of them. There was discussion, and argumentation, however.
The reason is that some of the team members feel that the tactical power of hobbits would be null in the large-scale battles that MTW is designed to simulate.
All is not lost to the shire;) : YOU could always start practicing your modding now and make a hobbit unit or two. If I were to do this, I would use standard archers and just fiddle with modding the "scale" to about 1/2 of what it is now.

Wouldn't it be more sensible to include Hobbits as a token unit for Gondorians or humans, like 'volunteer archers' or 'spies' or some shit. Just to include the idea on the larger scale? -as a playable faction the idea is ludicrous, of course...
Here's some Q & A from the dev's forum, it answeres the Hobbit question as well as a few others.
Answers:
1. Where are we at this point in the mod (units, camp map)?
Current focus is on: Gondor units & animations, Mordor animations, Campaign map & graphics, tech trees/buildings. Things are going well.
2. Will the Haradrim in fact be an included faction? If so, will Oliphaunts be in?
The Haradrim will almost certainly be the 8th faction. (The game requires 8 major factions, otherwise we would stick to just 7, with the Haradrim as part of Mordor). We hope to have Mûmakil (regardless of whether the Haradrim are their own playable faction), but like with the Nazgûl, it will depend if we can get them to work and balance reasonably.
3. Will the Swan Knights be more powerful than Rohan's Royal Mounted Guard?

4. Trolls? For the most part, most people know that they will be included, but they just want to know more about them.
Mordor will have Olog-hai. They're big and nasty.

Already answered: No.
7. How are the Orc animations going?
Slowly but surely. You can't rush a good thing.
8. Will Hobbit units be in?
Already answered: No.
9. Will the Uruk-Hai Scouts be in the final release for Isengard?
Already answered: No.
10. What will the Elvish banner look like?
You'll have to wait and see. The Elves will be the last faction to be done.
11. What faction will be done after Mordor?
Already answered: Dwarves.
12. Are Gondor's units done? If so, some screens of Swan Knights and Winged Guards?
No. We will post when we have something substantial to post about.
Can I find a list anywhere of the units and factions that will be included? Or are the untis still to be decided?

Small News Flash
DJ and PYJ have created a workable camp. map of middle earth as seen in the screenshots of the early days of development.
Now, the interface isn't completed. SO right now, Dj is working away on units graphics as well as the map inteface; which will eventually be totally Middle Earth. From the unit pieces to the general interface itself. We have a concept artist, Hoggy, working away on the unit images. His Haradrim pieces have been posted all over the dev's forum.
So things are looking up. A lot better than that depression we fell into a few months ago (particularly after the holidays). But still, a final version is months away, so stick with us guys

Also, to answer your questions, the moddists working on this fantastic mod are all skilled, gaining there knowledge here like I am currently before attempting anything big like a new mod I think we should all apreciate the modders working on this mod and the community. They have donated hours of there time to make this possibe, and we can only expect to keep things getting better and better. Meanwhile I'm interested getting into computer graphics and programming for a career.

I just want to applaud you guys for taking the effort to do this.
I am a big fan of the LOTR books and PJ movie series. I love the big battles - esp the ones in Two Towers. (I was the only one a bit disappointed with ROTK I think :) And I just can't wait to play a good working version of your mod.
Is there a good ftp site to download your mod?
And have you talked to Newline or Peter Jackson about your version.

The developers are very very clear that the films are NOTHING to do with the mod. And no,they won't be talking to new line.
And btw, it's a Middle Earth mod, not a 'historical' LotR mod.
Don't want to be snippy, but it's all there and I know the developers sometimes tire of hearing this stuff.
Having said that, how excited am I? About as excited as you. this seems to be the most ambitious mod ever...

Recently i herd of the mod for it called ME:TW this was very good news to here because i am a big LOTR's fan and mixing it with M:TW is a great idea. He's saying hes heard rumors that the mod works with VI, and wants to know if they are true. Simple enough to get even through his broken English.
Ok... I assume it will be made for VI, as it's easier to mod in that version, if it's not necessary anyway. VI gives more room for modding things, so most mods are for VI.
ME:TW is for Viking Invasion.
Correction: the released beta-files are for MTW1.1. But the development for the final version is made for VI.

Howdy folks, We're currently looking for someone to join the METW dev team. We need someone with alot of enthusiasm and free time and a reasonable understanding of modding for MTW.
The job is very specific, several units including the dwarves, orcs, snaga and olog-hai have been built in 3D, animated and rendered ready to become BIFs. What we need is someone to take the frames of animation and, using Unitmaker, turn them into BIFs usable in game. It would also mean weapon placement and creating all the files neccesary to assimilate these units into the build of METW. The job would also involve creating BIFs for new units as they are created.
It is a big and labourious job so please don't apply unless you are sure and have a good idea of what the job entails.

Bif placement is not a thing for me, so I'm afraid I cannot help. However, since this thread is no longer stickied, it's easy to ignore, and there those who think this mod dead. Think you could prove it not so if some screenshots of the models were shown to generate interest. Surprise is one thing - but I think excitement is more worth it.
Anyone who wants more info on the mod should head to the METW Forum, that's where we post updates & screenshots, answer questions, etc.
Glad you lads are still working on this mod I love the book and from a child dreamed of playing war games which covered this topic
