Liege wasn't at all happy last year.
Edit:
Van der Saar surprised me very much with his saves. I never considered him to be a high quality GK. I was not surprised by Lampard's miss; having never had the rare privalige of seeing him actually score a penalty myself. I think he missed 8 penalties in a row last season.
Van der Sar was ALWAYS a high quality GK.
Nice move by Salford Red Sox. (:laugh4:...what a name)
I'd agree with edyz on van der Sar. Only last season were people beginning to
question whether he still had the necessary ability to play at the top level, and
even then he still pulled off excellent saves at critical moments in games.
Lampard scored a nice one from around the penalty spot in the Portugal game 3
years ago, but that was a miskick. Clearly since then whenever he's attempted
to take a kick properly it nearly always results in miserable failure.
Van Der Sar said that Helmuth Duckadam (the famous Romanian goalkeeper who guarded 4 penalties in a row at the CL final ) is better than him. "I can't compare myself with Duckadam."

Manchester United play two matches in two different countries tonight but Sir Alex Ferguson will not be at either of them, having cried off with the kind of excuse it is difficult to imagine he would accept from one of his players - he is moving house and his wife, Lady Cathy, will not let him go.
"I told Cathy I had a match," he explained last night, "but she wasn't having any of it. She said it was a friendly and that I had to help her."
So the 'Hairdrier' gets the treatment. :2thumbsup: :laugh4:
Indeed. Deal worth an eventual £9 million.Quote:

Mido. Yes, Mido. What a waste. Craigy boy'll have his work cut out.
On the domestic front, Kaunas were outclassed by Hibs at home, and the ned

dubbing new striker Ričardas Beniušis [no medals] "Bennyuseless".
Oh and Rythmic, big fan of the A-League at all? Not that I'd gauge footballing
ability by adverts, oh no, but I just found something which I thought slightly
amusing. Rooney cashed in on a Nike advert where he volleys a ball into a
camera*, and... the superstars down your way did their best. Well,
Adelaide United. They're only what, a few hundred miles off? Fine for away
support, I'm sure!
*How many takes? You can see the faded target on the camera at the start.
Edit:
Anyone like to watch those Nike Joga Bonita commercials? I find them awesome. :2thumbsup:
Well, quite a few leagues across Europe started today, including the English
Premier League. Interesting results include Sunderland's last-minute win over
Spurs and Svennis' Man City team putting in a very polished first half
performance against West Ham, and manage to score despite being
up against it in the second.*
Oh, and of course, Bolton got tanked by Big Sam. ~
*I thought it was a nice touch that down in the fizzy pop league
Sheffield United had the West Ham scoreline announced to them
at Bramall Lane just to cheer them up.
bugger.
:embarassed:
Edit:
Spurs were away, though. Mind, when they're at home they do seem to develop
something almost resembling a backbone. Elano looks very good for the wee
Mancs, and I think once Petrov learns to pass they could be even more
dangerous going forward.
Unfortunately I'm obliged to care about the Boro, though I won't worry yet, as
they do tend to throw away leads on the opening day. As for Arsenal, I think
anything less than an absolute mauling of Fulham will leave me pessimistic in the
extreme. Sanchez is the giant-killer, remember.
He did manage to miss a relatively good chance, didn't he? Hopefully he'llQuote:

Healy scored after 50 seconds? And still they're trailing.
:wall:
How many corners do you need to get the delivery right?!
David Pleat needs a kicking. Diabo?
Yaaas, Klebuhuhlebaklub! 'ave it.
Ajax Amsterdam has won the Dutch Supercup, the Johan Cruyff Schaal, after beating PSV with 1-0. :beam:
And the infinitely more important first division (AKA the division formerly known as the third division) . And Gillingham lost, one nil, away, to Cheltenham.Quote:

So, that's another nine months of misery starting, and a narrow escape from the drop at the end of it. I hate football.
We're all masochists, really. And I do believe I've already found one of my favourite
images of the season.
Bordeaux Pts6 P2 W2 D0 L0 GF3 GA0 GD3
That's how to start a season, kids. :beam:
Edit:
The pieshop probably. :laugh4:
[Perhaps I shouldn't post while the games are on.] :embarassed:
Arsenal are after Artur Boruc again, if the rumours are to be believed. I think he
would be just what's needed when Jans Lymen [David Pleat's words!] is playing
as he is. At the start of the season you need a reliable keeper at the back to
organise the defence and show enough concentration to at least allow the team
to take more than two points from the first few games. Jans needs to sit out a
few.
As for the Scouse, you want to see Crouch? That's a bit drastic. Never liked him
as a player, myself, and would definitely agree on Kuyt. Unless Gerrard scores a
good share of dodgy freekicks/penalties, and Torres plays an absolute blinder of
a season, I would say Liverpool are going to be well off the leaders; especially
when Benitez continues that ridiculous rotation.
Contrary to some suggestions, Voronin came from Bayer Neverkusen.
Does anybody follow the Bundesliga here? With the Duke gone it looks like we
need a German substitute. Why on earth is Klose at Bayern Munich now? I was
hoping for another unpredictable season in one of the leagues in Europe, but
now it looks like there's no hope of that. Unless Bordeaux can do the business. I
want to see what it looks like when Lyon lose again. [Lost out on making the
group stages to who?] Caught the tailend of some highlights the other night,
but it was some standard looking win over Auxerre.
Edit:
:laugh4: The Calling, wasn't it? Never heard that one on a youtube video before.
The boy looks like a Polish Gordon, in terms of reactions. They seem to have a
knack for churning out uncommonly good goalkeepers.
Fair enough about Crouch. His record doesn't lie, but I still think a man that tall
should be capable of heading a ball. Yet he can't jump, he has to climb! I'd
guess Babel will be classy, though I think Torres should have stayed in Madrid.
Best Slovenian team of modern times, and nobody knows it. :laugh4: Got to the groupQuote:

the second leg, though the videos have been removed.
Edit: Elvish? :inquisitive: And just another thought, as I see it looks like related disputes
have already started in the comments for that video: why was Poom never
given a chance? I know he had a lengthy injury spell, but he didn't even get
Carling Cup games, did he? He had that one game at the end, which was
little more than a token gesture.
Well I dont have to remind everyone Miami beat Jacksonville right?
~D Miami get better every year~D
Indeed, very good, Cossack.
Should have said, Spurs and Darren Bent were made to look average by a fairly
solid Everton side at White Hart Lane.
Rangers scraped past their first leg against Crvena Zvezda with a 90th minute
goal in a game where nobody was keen on going forward. The highlight of the
match for me was switching onto the BBC website and turning on the online
stream at the start. Because the English BBC wasn't showing the match, Holby
City [Rubbish hospital soap] came on instead. Cue someone frantically looking
through the Sky channel listings to try and figure out how to change it to
BBC Scotland. :laugh4:
Other first leg results:
Edit:
Apparently Voronin scored a spectacular goal, and Celtic managed a 1-1 draw in
Moscow; both things I didn't see coming.
