First time I've ever peeked into this thread. Just had to say, music for me is funny. When I find a new band that really clicks, its like falling in love. Really. And like falling in love, you can forget what it feels like when it hasn't happend for a long time.
Anyway, I bought Icky Thump (the album, not the song) on I-tunes this morning and I can't stop listening to it. The White Stripes kick ass. I hadn't really been this into a band in probably 10 years.
Wow, just wow. They're great.
Warriors - Freedom Call

Paranoid - Black Sabbath
In the late 80's a period when the more prominent new wave bands had slipped into being a permanent bore (Echo and the Bunnymen, New Order) or even worse, had finally "matured" (U2) (doing mass sell outs in the process), amidst Madonna's and Michael Jackson's most commercial releases (Bad and Like a prayer) in their recording history, Michael Stipe's ever-annoying murmuring lyrics stretching over a series of ever same-sounding REM records and Morrisey's last (thank God) self emancipating posings with the Smiths, there was a band that was not only playing almost manic, straight rock'n'roll with such wide influences ranging from punk, Bowie and the Beatles to folk, but that also turned their nonesensical and controversial lyrics into works of dramatic excellence through their instinctive almost prime-ordeal approach and delivered song structures that literally brought about the "indie" explosion that was heralded at the time in the name of such insignificant phoneys as for example Nirvana, Radiohead and Blur among others that have admitted openly ripping off their songs.
Ironic how the inevitable and tragicomic "reunion" (as it tends to happen in these cases) was introduced through articles and documentaries starting with Kurt Cobain's or Tom York's "homage" to them - the very people that copied them only to take all the benefit. And yet, everytime they played, they still put that fire into it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avV1266d9k0
