A messenger entered the Curia and spoke with a guard. After being pointed in the direction of the most senior law maker, he rushed forward with a letter in hand, either ignorant or uncaring of the protocols of the chamber. The senator he interrupted on the floor stopped speaking and looked on in irritated curiosity. Brief words were exchanged between the courier and the senior senator who took the letter and read it several times over just to be sure his eyes were not playing tricks on him. His mouth hanging open, he looked to the courier who nodded repeatedly in answer to the unasked question.
"Fellow senatores, honored sons of Roma.........," his voice began to fail him and he stopped to gather his wits.
"Senator.....Legatus Tiberius Claudius Marcellus has passed into the afterlife. He struck his head after being thrown from a spooked horse and succumbed a fortnight ago after suffering three days in a delirium. Let us pray that he journeys well with Kharon."
The silence was nearly suffocating for those who heard this most unexpected news. What would this mean for the Res Publica?
"The death of a senator of Rome, always is a tragedy.", Lvcvllvs said. "My thoughts are with his family"
Norbanus spoke in accordance
"The forum will never be the same without his presence, may pluto guard his soul"
A small Senator on one of the back benchers rose slowly and slipped out of the Curia whilst the mourning commenced. Titvs Labinivs strode over to one of the Senates messengers awaiting orders outside the Curia, and spoke to him for a short while.
"Take the news of his death to the Praetor, Servivs. Ride quickly; I am sure Caivs Avrelivs and Avlvs Aemilivs will be anxious to hear the news."
The messenger nodded, and quickly saddled his horse, galloping off down the early morning street.
Manius Claudius entered the Curia and went to his seat
apparently informed of the situation, Manius Claudius spoke.
"It is a tragedy, and a pity that a fellow senator has lost his life. his death would demoralise the soldiers of Legio III, who have known their Legate for a long time; I would hope that it does not effect them when their other commanders order them to attack Syracuse."
"however, I bring good news. The city of Messana has fallen into our republic's control with the help of the consular Legion. some of the rowdy population has been expelled, and we have gained a foothold near Carthaginian territory. let us pray to the gods that the campaign to capture Sicilia is a success."
While Tiberius Claudius' death was unforeseen, Appius Claudius could see that the gods were on his side - he had just gained the 5th Legio, and already a (in)famous politician had died, leaving a major power vacuum. Additionally, the spot waiting to be filled required a firm enemy of Caius Aurelius and his military adventurisms. Nero's astronomical rise to power had begun.
He sent Quintus Sertorius off to deliver a message to certain Senators regarding a possible invasion of Africa.

this is quite a dark day, Tiberivs was a good man who didnt deserve death.....
I propose that we build a magnificent life-size statue of him here in the curia. So while his titan like presence was felt during his life, his human sized presence well be felt during his afterlife.
(We RP that there is a statue SOMEWHERE in the curia, could be fun you never know)
"Though I gladly condone a statue to be made, the Curia Hostilia bears statues and so it should remain. On the Forum, we can designate a nice spot for it though."
Lvcvllvs arose and said: "Tiberivs Clavdivs was an honourable man, but we haven't even built a statue when our great Asina heroically fell in battle! We can't just build a statue of every dead man here in the Curia. Let's mourn, let's make a great feast with a few smaller games for the people to honour him. I agree with Qvintvs. Maybe a Statue on the Forum or near his family's residence, ok. But a Statue in the Curia? Come on, calm down. Ye Gods, he was not Apollo!"
Decimvs rose and spoke, "I second Lvcvllvs. If we truly seek to honor Tiberivs Clavdivs with a statue, it should be placed where all can see and remember what Tiberivs Clavdivs has done for Roma."
Nay, Tiberivs Clavdivs himself would most certainly be opposed to the idea of a statue!
"Right you are. And besides, he was not even commander of a Legion nor has he won many elections and votings", Lvcvllvs said. "Therefore a Statue would be more than exaggerated, especially in the Curia. Again I propose to make a small feast with some Gladiator-fights in his honour. After all he was a very charismatic man."
It is well and good that Syrakousai has accepted our generous and well-intentioned offer of an alliance. The city has a long and rich history of men who know how to maintain power and order, even if they are Greek, and their obedience--pardon me, their cooperation will create an unstoppable force against the foul likes of the Carthaginians.
Fine, no such statue in the curia. But I will build another statue, and put it up in the future house of Licentia Proletair.
Cornelius Blasio walks into the curia...
"Ave good senatores, my condolences to our fallen friends family. Forgive my lateness, but my plans to establish Taras as part of our regional provinces has been much work, as well as much stress. I will spend some time in Roma for a while until I return. Perhaps visit the home of Senator Tiberius Marcellus. I would like to also extend my congratulations to Consul Manius Cicero on his victories in the field, and to Dux Seruius Longus for finely executing diplomacy in Syrikousai. I hope when this conflict is over, our Republic may return to peace and prosperity."
Cornelius takes a seat and calls to a scribe to be brought up to date...
Hail senators and fellow knights! I am Marcvs Clavdivs Marcellvs. I have recently achieved the rank of tribune, but have not been given a legion to serve with. I wish to make my way to the side of a General. Would there be one willing to sponsor me as an addition to their army?
Ave Tribune Marcvs Marcellvs, head over to the Campvs Martivs and enlist yourself into an open legio. I recommend serving with the newly commissioned Legio V Itala under Legate Appivs Nero. They have no tribunes yet and are on their way to Sicilia to help defeat the Carthaginians.
At the same time, a messenger arrives bearing a miniature Legio V standard paid for by Nero.
Quote:
Legio V is currently accepting any number of tribuni who deem themselves worthy of serving Roma under the esteemed and honorable Senator Appius Claudius.
Thank you messenger, Cornelius nods , also inform good Appivs that it would be best for his army to join the siege at Lilibeo if he can make it in time for their walls to crumble.
(OOC: desert, ive been moving legio v for you, will you be able to handle that now?)
A letter from Epeiros arrived.
Quote:
Senatores
I hereby report to you the actual state of affairs. The borders of Epeiros are save. No unnecessary bloodshed has been done. According to reports of the frontier guard in the south, who's patrolling along the border between Epeiros and Aitolia under the command of Qvintvs Aemilivs, the Koinon Hellenon and Makedonia are struggling for these lands. Currently Thermon is besieged by a Makedonian force. It might be about time that we considered closer relationship to these peoples, in order to clarify each ones possessions and their associated borderlines.
Furthermore, since the war in Sicily is going well as I hear, and since we cannot reform all legions at once, I propose to start with one after another as soon as possible. Therefore, due to the currently calm situation in Epeiros, I request consideration of the immediate retraining and re-equipping of Legio II and the honourable discharge of its veterans, planned and done within half a year.
Respectfully
Avlvs Aemilivs Mamercvs, Legatvs Leg. II
(OOC: If your ask yourself how I know about the situation in Thermon, I used my cavalry as a spy)
Senatores, I suggest that we begin discussion as to the terms we should demand upon the Epirotes.
I too think we should start discussing peace with the Epirorites. Our focus should be on our much more dangerous enemy, Carthrage.
Also, I think we should send a few agents over to see what is going on in Central Greece.
(Decimus Aurelius is speaking here; refer to my SOT to see who he is)
We have a spy, Spurius Papirius Carbo, stationed in northern Macedon to monitor Epirote activity; as of this season; the Epirotes seem to be weakened, maintaining only small garrisons in Tylis and Pella; with no field armies within range of both cities.
As for Greece, our merchants say that there seems to be a stalemate between the Antigonid kings and the Greek City-states. (OOC: did this by holding the right mouse button and hovering the cursor over Greece, nothing seems to have changed)
The Curia doors open and in marches Caivs Avrelivs Cotta with a small entourage. He walks quickly and purposefully to his seat, and waits for the Senate to acknowledge him before rising to speak.
Gentlemen of the Senate, I am on a visit to Roma from Ambrakia to personally bring forth my plans for the peace talks with Eperios, as I believe the Senate has not yet decided upon a final message.
As the Roman official in charge of the former Epirite homelands, and having fought against them for much of my career, I am sure you agree I am in a prime position to express my opinion as to what the limits of our diplomatic talks should be. My ideas are split into four main areas, as follows:-
-The country of Epeiros and the kingdoms of Illyria will remain under Roman control and influence. The Kingdom formally known as Epeiros will no longer have any claim to their former homeland, as is the right of the victor to impose upon the defeated. The former Epirites will relinguish all hold and influence over the Epirite and Illyrian population, leaving them entirely under the sole protection of the SPQR. I suggest also to solidify this to our enemies, we refuse to acknowledge these people as Epirites anymore.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
-The former kingdom of the Epirites will be forced to pay war indemities in return for the damage caused to Roman lands and military power, and to compensate the families whose suffering has increased due to the war with Roma.
-The former kingdom of the Epirites will also have to dismantle their forces that comprise of soldiers heralding from lands now no longer under Epirite domination. This will include all native Epirite troops, all Illyrian troops, all Italian mercenaries, and indeed all mercenaries from the lands of Greece or the surrounding kingdoms. In return, Roma will provide the protection of the lands and people still under their control.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
-And finally, the former kingdom of the Epirites will need to relinguish any hold they have on the country and kingdom of Makedonia, including the cities of Pella, Thessalonika, Pydna and Olynthe. This kingdom will then be returned to the former and rightful rulers, the Antigonids. Roma will then extract an alliance with Antigonids and Makedonia, and these two powers will keep the peace in Greece, and keep the former Epirites from ever interfering in our affairs again.
I thank you, Senators, and ask that you discuss my proposals carefully and considerably. We must bring a final document to the Epirites as soon as possible.
"Seconded, seconded and seconded again!", Lvcvllvs said.
Norbanus rose
"I agree that current Roman territory should remain Roman territory. However, that's as far as my agreement goes." Norbanus paused to refold his toga.
"Why should the Epiroteans be forbidden to call themselves what they are? Why should we inflict such a thing upon them? They have been deprived of the bulk of their lands and the bulk of their men."
Norbanus gazed around the Curia. "How would you feel when someone told you you were no longer allowed to call yourself a Roman? Besides, What shall the venerable Caivs Avrelivs have the Epeiros call themselves from now on? Romans? Ridiculous! We don't even condone calling our Italian allies Romans.. Why should we give that privilege to a band of pirates from across the Adriatic?
QUIRINUS WOULD TURN IN HIS GRAVE! I shall not have it" Norbanus thundered.
"Agreed a heft tribute should be paid. But why foist ourselves with the additional burden of having to look after the remnant of Epeiros? Let them fend for themselves against the Macedonians and Greeks. Let us preserve the status quo in Greece, so that none of the 3 factions becomes a menace to us.
Either we conquer the remaining Epeiros cities and make a worthy Roman Province out of them, or we don't. Protectorates means we actually have to protect them, take care of them, pay attention to them.
Why should we do that? I see no reason. And I hope you fellow senators do not see it either."
So I am willing to second a tribute to be paid and ther conquered lands as to remain Roman. Everything else is a nay." Norbanus concluded.
