The church people have the All Saints day here too, but most people don´t really care. Biggest change I really noticed, 6an (TV channel) featured lots of horror movies.

ye we're told by our cultural related teachers that we should celebrate our own celebrations, not those from other countries like USA... that we should be happy and proud with what we have.
I live in México btw :smash:
and ye here most of the peopl think that disguising is for children hehe
Wow, from reading this thread Americans are really hated all over the world aren't they? Anyway, isn't dressing up in costumes in the spring the same thing as dressing up in costumes in the Fall (Halloween)? What is all saints day,and I doubt any holiday can be considered serious nowadays...
It's a ong story.
short version: It truns out the custom known to American (and the Isles) poeple as holloween, dates back IIRC to an ancient Irish ceremony, that got taking over by the catholics as a kind of all-saints day.
the reason why Orthodox christians celebrate in spring is due to cannonnical differences w/catholics (again, IIRC). all saints day is for all the saints who don't have a special day (plus those who do).
as to why anyone would celebrate a holiday in a serious manner, because most poeple have a need to party and celebrate the good things in an ordered manner (not to ber confused with partying). from your post, I see a severe shortage in that department on your end:clown:
I haven't read this whole thread but from what I have read it looks like it has little to do with EB and has been at times spam... Though it is not really bad enough to warrent closing... just a warning...
Our spring festival has nothing (or very little) to do with dead or saint people, the costumes are brighter and there are less ghost or similar motives even those are popular too, it is only about having fun and enjoying oneself as much as possible. It is like Venetian or Rio carnival. Ends at Ash wednesday and 40-days long lent comes after that. (Roman-catholic, perhaps your statement about Orthodox is true, just if your post has something to do with my previous one.)
By serious celebration I meant that partying is not part of the celebration, people visit tombs of their relatives, light candles on cemetaries. Perhaps that is the reason why many people don't like Halloween, it disturbs the piety of these days.
Why spam and offtopic? Discussion about roots of our culture, especially if they originate from customs in EB timeframe (Samhain) could be allowed.
I wasn't serious too, just pretend that I was telling it with a slight grin on my face.
