Thanks. Now we can judge.
Hmm, noticed a small problem - people with neither a url or a system avatar (like my account now) don't show up perfectly. "therother's Avatar" is shown, although the problem is slightly different in IE & Opera than it is in Firefox, but it seems to be the url avatar code in both cases.
Just wondering that instead of having no avatar when you turn off your system avatar, if it would be better to get a basic avatar instead (somewhat similar to what you suggest above, but for system avatars this time)? Perhaps just the border of the current avatars but with no picture inside? We could even have some text to encourage curmudgeons like me to pick an avatar and be done with it, e.g. "This spoilsport has chosen not to select an avatar". ~;)
if i select display url avatars i get to see two avatars for most people,
thus i have to travel with it off - it's annoying :-(
That was my concern also. But Tosa has fixed it so that if you travel with system avatars off, you will only see one - the url avatar if available, or the system avatar if not. So you will see a custom avatar for Tosa and Uesugi Kenshin. For everyone else you should just see the system avatar.
Edit: With the exception of people with no avatar. There seems to be a little problem with those, although perhaps only on my side.
ah - so i see, thanks therother
by the way,
becasue Ichi and Uesugi had images i either had better copies of, or that i could work with,
here are some custom avatars that they can either beg tosa to add to the collection or copy to a url/image host somewhere and use for url avatars (if they want)
IF you can talk Tosa into adding them Pick One ONLY

This is a template edit, already done with RTW but not changed the others yet.Quote:

Uesugi has posted a one-liner, even though many posts contain more lines, do we feel 200 pixels high is too much for the avatar? Or do we allow this upper boundary?
The proposal for 15 kb has merit indeed.
I personally feel that anyone should be able to use this, but, as there are no software checks and this system relies on the goodwill of its users, new members should get a fair chance to learn about the ifs and buts. Any suggestions there?
Ah, yes, it works fine in RTW. ~:)Quote:

15 kb for the avatar alone, or for avatar + sig pic? I'm not really bothered either way for myself, but I think the latter would be better for narrowbanders.
As there are currently no software checks and this system relies on the goodwill of its users, this could be a pretty large security hole. There's nothing really to stop people putting in nasties. So I think, and I know this is going to make me very popular, that it should be Members only until we can secure it a little. After all, it only takes a few minutes for a malicious hacker to register and become a Junior Member.
As for securing it a little, perhaps we could restrict all url avatars to those hosted on the totalwar.org server, meaning the Staff would have a much greater degree of control over what people are putting on. It would mean a short delay, but I think most patrons would be all right with that.
Also, i think it might be possible to reuse the IMG tag security code checks in hacks, but it's a long time since I did any vBulletin modding. Perhaps there is something in the unfinished hack above that could be useful (unlicensed users don't get to see code)?

Please please please
It would make me very happy to have
http://www.totalwar.org/barocca/avatar/Ichi_10.gif
as my system avatar
Arigatou Barocca it was difficult to choose between them
ichi
Tosa could you switch my avatar with the bottom right one that Barocca made.
Thanks Barocca it looks better, not cut of and all.
Yes, that one sseems to be the clearest, non-cutoff picture that encompasses the whole horse (mostly or all) and some of the smoke. i like it a lot.
< ====== Is that cool or what?
I'm unique again!!!!
Thanks guys
ichi
So what, are we getting custom avatars now?
If so then tell me as soon as possible. I have some kewl ideas for my mine.
PS. That's a great avatar Ichi(the Killer ~;) ).

Hi
Just a clarification based on the above. There already seems to be a system for custom avatars as ichi now has one. So can we have both a URL avatar and a custom board one?

ichi ~
Tosa,
Part of stepping back means revealing my face once again. So could you please give me this avatar,http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfold...8/dukejohn.gif, so that I can keep my pet skeleton?
Thanks,
Duke John
HEHE, that pet skeleton is so cool. I wish I had thought of that. :balloon2:
Yes, that's correct Morat. The url avatar system isn't activated yet though, as there are still some issues to discuss, like byte size.Quote:

The skin on Ikonboard (18 months ago) allowed 10 kb for the avatar and 10 kb for the signature picture(s). The 10 kb worked well then, but we can talk about less/more.
A 10KB/10KB limit for sig/avatar works fine for me, if others are happy with it. I guess if people are having troubles, they could always go back to the board avatars only without losing too much. Be a bit of a shame though.
I think perhaps we need to poll a wider audience. This thread is pretty cluttered with stuff, so perhaps we need a new thread to just focus on the issues relating to the url avatar system itself?
A poll would be a good idea.
I think that it would be good if custom avatars followed a similar style to the portraits already used...
I dunno, I just think its good that way, give the boards a unique feel.
Its great to see DJ's skeleton again, I was worrying it might die, not that it can die
Well,
I agree with having a Theme, a Theme is important it symbolizes that which represents the community and its Role or Goal, in this Case, a Community about Total War series of Games, and the big package that comes with it (History, Friendship, Modding etc).
I personally do not really care of a system however, and I am not about to start posting to raise count, I simply do not post if I have nothing to say that can contribute in one way or another.
So I would tend to say give people variety of choice, make this a livelly place to be not a competition of who has the highest post count and associated "reward".
Thank you
