I'm completely done with the backroom. I highly applaud any changes to the backroom that would elevate the discussion, reduce the occurrence of redundant threads, and hopefully cut down on the cut and paste odysseys that violate copyrights.

I don't see how closing that thread was the kick off to any beneficial changes to the backroom. Harping on that thread being closed has come across as nitpicking to alot of people here, and although I can see why, the thread didn't bother me very much at first. I was only asking why the thread was closed and why banning was being threatened.

Then this thread went on for a few pages and there was never one explanation on why the thread was closed, which made it all the more curious. This is where we discuss org policy, no?

Apparently making special olympic jokes is an old org tradition and ignorantly I reported an offensive (to me) post. Please don't make the same mistake if you value your current warning level.

I'd like to say thanks to the people that put some thought into what they posted here, even if the target of the thread never did. I'm looking forward to a new and improved backroom but if this is what the transition period is going to be like, then I'll just take an extended vacation. (yes, I can hear all of your applause)

A shame. As I said you are one of the few posters that always behaved in a respectful manner, often making an effort to keep debates civil. Your input on topics was valuable and will be missed.

Shame Proly. You gave the Backroom a very warm and civil atmosphere.

And I still don't get it. What's the use of the warning?! ~:confused: What has she done?!

Couldn't the video that soly showed be construed as knowingly false? It was evidently fake and fixed and with that material he said it reminded him of some people he saw online (also possibly implying that it reminded him of people here).

I mean all those 'hey, you should've spelled out for me that it was a joke because I can't figure anything out myself' replies.

Granted though, that, being a mod, Soly should've shown a bit more restraint in his replies.

Fun whining from everyone, I'd like more diversity, but it might become a running joke... I can only wait for Kukri to make a photoshop of a ban stick (various ideas: armpit stick, or Luke whoever vs Dark Soly with a big lightstick claiming he's your daddy).

Why does the stuff always hit the fan when I'm out of my office? I agree with everyone else that my lady's contributions to the Backroom will be sorely missed, that is, if she decides to call it a holiday. Proletariat, please don't? :bow:

As for Solypsist, he used to be great during his previous stint as a moderator. Often the fun would start when he woke up, not the other way round. Maybe he has to feel his way back into his role as a moderator; I am fully prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. After his experience of Japanese etiquette I guess that being among us, unwashed Backroomists, once again can be a bit confrontational. We should be grateful that some people are willing to clean up the mess after us every now and then.

after reading the thread i would have to say that solypsist, though a good moderator, might be a tad too biased to moderate the back room. different tasks require different kinds of people, and i think it's fairly safe to say that very few people are capable of moderating a forum like the back room without a strong bias. moderators, like other patrons of the .org, are only human. The best thing to do IMO is to also have a number of more conservative moderators.

Am i the only one who finds the following odd to say the least?(Note:this is only my understanding of what happened. Feel free to correct anything wrong with it....)

It's just flat-out bad policy for moderators to intervene in anything that personally concerns them. It should not be allowed, period.

The phrase solipsist was referring to, for those of you who don't get it, runs along the lines of "Arguing on the Internet is like being in the Special Olympics: even if you win, you're still a retard." In other words, he was calling everyone who posted in the Backroom a retard (including himself, of course, except that as I gather he was dropping out).

Anyway, I don't even go to the Backroom, but that a moderator could call people retarded, not show the slightest sign of regret, and then warn someone for reporting their post and remarking on what they said, does not bode well.

So, is it right to bring out the old retarded joke? We haven't really seen an answer, and I'd like to know the Org's policy on this. Is it acceptable, or not?

It seems to me that Proles warning was unneccessarily harsh. That is unless the Mod saw or knew something hidden to the rest of us on this thread. What started as a low key complaint about a so-called banstick has escalated

I'd presumed that the .orgs rules appied to everyone equally? or perhaps not. The .org is'n't a free and democratic state, it is someones property and as such we should endeavor to conduct ourselves in a manner that befits such a position. Ultimately we are guests here, at the discreation of the owner/s.

I still think this could have been handled better though. Perhaps some moves out of sight (PM) might be in order to restore some decorum.

Also, is it 'bad form' to post a PM unless both parties agree to it?

Perhaps a period of reflection is called for.

Surely there ought to be a trade off between how insulting something is and how amusing it is before a warning is given? After all, we could spend all our time patiently trying to correct the misconceptions of our fellow posters, not that it ever works. Or we could make the point by reference to Soldier of Fortune magazine and the sin of Onanism, a vivid, even poetic, imagine, if I may say so.

I know which Jonathan Swift would have chosen.

As for issuing a warning for reporting a post that you yourself made, that is clearly wrong, although I guess we don't know if the warning was discussed behind the scenes. If it was it would have been sensible for the warning to come from another mod IMHO.
