I think this depends a lot on whether you are also working on smithing and enchanting. I have 100 smithing and about 90 enchanting, and it's incredibly rare for me to find pieces of armor that are better than what I can make myself. I'm a light armor mage and I wear a full suit of custom-enchanted glass armor. I also have a full set of legendary dragonscale, but it's not enchanted yet because I'm waiting to hit 100 before I do so. I used to wear Dark Brotherhood stuff, but it just couldn't keep up with the vastly superior protection that my legendary glass armor has. With high enchanting, you can also make sure you get exactly the enchantments you want, instead of having to decide between less optimal protection for more preferable enchantments.
The only exception I've found to this are a certain set of masks that I won't discuss further due to spoilers. Those things, with smithing improvements, are absolutely superb.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Well, I'm lvl 30 now, my smithing is at around 65, and enchanting at a pathetic 35, but I use some gloves I found me that raise smithing an extra 17%, so I don't do too badly. Besides, I skipped Orcish and Dwarven on the development cycle. Still not sure if that will allow me to unlock further levels...

Yeah but with a flying dragon around its alot easier to maintain stealth and backstab people who are all looking up at the big dragon and anyone that is too weak to be worth killing usually gets killed in the first pass. Unrelenting force has its ups but I find when fighting outdoors all it does is make it harder for me to find lootable bodies as anyone killed by unrelenting force has an annoying habit of getting chucked into a really hard to get area.

I doubt people watch his reviews for fair judgement of the games. His reviews are funny though, and that is why I always watch them.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
But the kind of trolling he did for that one I find to be quite vulgar, and not funny.

Yatzee plays a caricature of himself in those vids. He often likes the games he is taking the mickey out of. However, his point is that there is no perfect game, and he points out the flaws accordingly.

Yep, just punching holes in a very immature medium with comedy. If I'd been around and paying attention at the start of cinema or literature I'm sure there were folks doing the same thing.
These aren't game reviews he's doing people. ;)

I'm guessing they were trying to keep a balance between the old and new.
Daedric armour has traditionally been the strongest in all TES games to date, AFAIK. To nerf that in favour of dragon armour wouldn't have made much sense.
But on the other hand Dragon Armour is nearly as good, and has a different look to it (one I don't much like BTW...the helmet's cool, but everything is else is too boney).
Anyway none of it matters. With enough points in smithing and a few well chosen items with smithing-fortifying enchantments on them you can eaisly reach the armour level cap, even with Orcish or Steel plate.
Personally I wish that they should've made the Draugr armour look cooler. It's got a really nice looking helmet and everything else looks like leather and fur.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Skyrim HD textures change your game a lot.
However if you ever decide to give that a go, do not forget to use Skyrim 4GB so that 4GB of a virtual memory could be allocated to your Skyrim as well as -afterwards- adding iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=3000000000 under [Papyrus] in your Skyrim.ini file that is located at My Games\Skyrim.

Other than being lighter, Dragon Armour is far easier to get the mats for.

I do enjoy genres wherein making suits out of my enemies is considered socially acceptable.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Oh in addition to Skyrim HD Textures, these complement best:
Vurt's Flora
Lush Trees
I should reiterate that in case you use these mods Skyrim 4GB is a must to evade crashes and purple textures problems.
ATI users are advised to turn off AA and AF from the game and use ATI CCC to apply such settings. It indeed allows a drastic FPS incrase especially after patching the game with the Hi-Res texture packs above.
Nvidia users (I'm not one) are told to tweak to certain configurations via a tool called Nvidia Inspector as instructed here.
The game is over-dull with its original textures. No wonder why we were amazed at the smoothness of the graphics maxed out. Textures are too light to create any burden on a good rig although top notch is switched.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Those HD textures look great. But, my machine is just barely doing the job with the graphics as they currently are. And my machine is pretty decent... so I think I'll give those a miss for now... =P
TBH, the game runs like poop on my machine. No idea why. Every other game I have runs fine. (AMD Phenom II x6 OC 3.5Ghz [down-clocking to default specs doesn't help], HD5870, 8gb RAM) I consistently get about 25fps on anything above medium settings.
Hmmm. OCing down and back up to 3.5Ghz seems to have done the trick. Runs beautifully. I knew it was CPU bound, but didn't realise how much so.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
For those looking to push their monster rig further and enhance Skyrim visuals even further should try out ENBSeries.
Make sure you have a top notch gfx card though.
-

TBH. CPU is more important for Skyrim. It is bound to 2 cores, performance on anything below an solid i5 or heavily oced AMD rig is not great.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I've read that the game is heavily CPU-bound however I doubt it's the same about post-processing injections, e.g. SSAO, like ENBSeries do. Are you sure, matey ?

Depends on how you're defining "not great"; I've been playing on a lightly OCed Core 2 Duo E6600, and I'm doing just fine. I was chuffed when one of the Skyrim team's patch notes talked about optimizing for Core 2 Duo performance. They like me! They really, really like me!

My definition of "not great" is ultra settings at 1080p running at a stuttery 25fps. Which, yes, is a little different from many other's definitions. However, if a game is pretty, I want it at it's prettiest.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Please report back about (non-existent) benefits, Psychonaut.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Ok. Tested.
Settings:
1080p
AAx8
AFx8
Textures=High
Radial Blur=low (personal preference, I hate radial and motion blur in any and every game)
Shadows=High (ultra has minimal improvement for the fps hit)
Decals=Ultra
FXAA=On
Reflect=All
View Distance=Max
Distant Objects=Medium
Testing Area:
Markarth, probably the most visually demanding area in the game. A good combination of NPCs, ambient activity, water and distant objects. Starting from the entrance, looping to the left, up to Understone Keep, to the Guard Tower, round to Vlindrell and back to the entrance. A place where my fps was always average at best.
Without Tweak:
Max fps: 43
Avg fps: ~35
Min fps: 19
Minimum was reached at the entrance to Vlindrell, with the view of the valley, the city and three waterfalls dropping fps.
With Tweak:
Max fps: 45
Avg fps: ~35
Min fps: 21
Overall, it made a minor difference. The minimum occurred in the same spot, and a 2fps gain there. It seems to make a difference, but it would probably be more pronounced on a weaker rig.

Sneak overpowered? Meh.
How bout an Orc with a 100 in smithing, conjuration, heavy armor, and one-handed?
A tank like that with full legendary Daedric Armor is tough to kill, as is the two storm Atronachs I can summon at once!

sneak friendly classes but maybe redguard overall.

Its a pity the max armour rating makes any armour more advanced than ebony pretty redundant.

big glitch lost an hours worth of gameplay because in the way of the voice ive encountered a game breaker. cannot get master einkrah (spelling is off sorry) to teach me the second word the symbol just sits on the ground. DAMN
Edit; and then i kid you not i turned back to the game after typing this and it immediately froze on me.

When you're playing I think it's a good idea to save often and have multiple saves in case you get a bug like that or you encounter an unbeatable enemy you can't run away from.

There's a ton of stuff to love about this game. I especially like the Radiant Quest system. It's perhaps the most seemless and enjoyable RPG experience i've had in a long while.
its true about role play. i am playing a two handed nord and it just feels so..... right.
also as an aside easily the best main quest in any elder scrolls game so far (just got horn of jurgen)
Edit2: seriously though the glitches and bugs are horrible in the 360 version. yet again unable to complete the quest to learnt he final word of unrelenting force. this time the dragon writing doesnt even show up when he says it on the ground and it just sort of ends; luckily i have saves available.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
It's too bad that due to some thing I can't get well rested or sick anymore :P
Anyways, I suggest to notch the difficulty up to expert (not master! that's just masochism) it makes it IMHO more enjoyable if you beat someone/something.

It's the not knowing whether or not each loading screen is going to crash the game that's killing me. Shoulda spent the extra money on an Xbox 360 with a harddrive, so I could install it and see if that fixes it a bit.
The HDD ability to install games makes it well worth the cash outlay. I bought it separately for my 360 2.0 and have not regrets. My Skyrim game does hang a bit on loading, but has yet to lock-up.

That said, this game is amazing. After trying a few characters just to get the hang of it, I finally settled on a Redgaurd Fighter-Mage guy. I'm now level 13, and I've got a badass suit of enchanted Elven Armor. Also, the Mage College quest line is fantastic--absolutely worth checking out, even if you don't like the Magic aspect. In fact, the whole story feels very Wheel of Time-ish, and I like it.
Also, Bound Blades are awesome if you get the Perks.. especially if mixed with some magic, dual wielding, and one-handed perks.
I haven't done anything but the main quest (and 1 side quest) yet. I'm gonna break off when I get the Dragonrend shout. Then I can deal with random dragon encounters better.

Oh yes, I love it, though I dont really like the fur pelt they stuck on the groin area.
Fortunately if you can upgrade it to legendary the whole max armour rating thing makes it as strong as daedric.

Ebony is sexy as well, but Daedric is too much for my aesthetics. My Nord looks like something from a hair metal band or a Gwar concert.
From what I've heard, though, you hit some sort of max armor level or something like that, so you can take your steel plate all the way to level 50. Can somebody explain that to me?
