Ok. Up till now I have:
Uninstalled Rome Total War, Barbarian Invasion, Chivalry Total War, Rome Total Realism, 4turns/year meni-mod, the map fix, and all their registry keys.
Re-installed Rome Total War 1.0, patched it to 1.3, then installed Barbarian Invasion 1.4, then installed patch 1.6, then installed Rome Total Realism Platinum version, then patched it to 1.5, then the mod switcher, and now I tested it and it works.
Though, the tricky part is the 4turns/year meni-mod, it keeps making the folder Rome Total War wherever it installs, and since it is another mod, it keeps replacing some RTR files, and leaving some, making it 'not' work.
So, any thoughts about that?
I've never used the mod-switcher, but can't you just install the Metropolis Naval mod on top of RTR Platinum, so the mod-switcher thinks they are a single mod (which they are for its purposes, I suspect).Quote:

When I do that, Simon, it creates ../RTR/ROme Total War/Metropolis mod data classified in the same folder structure: Data folder, UI folder, etc..
You see what I mean?
Maybe I am missing something here - not knowing about what the mod swapper does - but why not just overwrite the RTR data folder with that which you've extracted from Metropolis/Naval and so on for any other folders? If you can't stop it creating its own folders on extraction, just use windows explorer to cut and paste them on top of those for RTR stuff.Quote:

I do not see any such report.
I've been continuously adding to my post in the First Consul Reports thread through edits as the campaign went on. I've made the final edits now, and the complete report is in that thread.
I will give you an example:Quote:

If I paste the Metro mod one over the RTR one, it won't work. If I do the other, it also won't work.
So, what is the way to join in the different files from the two, and replace the smaller ones, with the bigger ones (Edited ones)?
The LRP way of “getting into trouble and causing wars”:
1) Your diplomat is very undiplomatic in his negotiations and really ticks your intended “victim” off! Gets himself killed (assassinated). Vola! One excuse “they murdered Lexus, the barbarians! They must die.”
2) Assassination failure. Take one inept or otherwise disposable “assassin/scout” and give him a mission he’s sure to fail on. Vola! One excuse, “They murdered Decius, the barbarians! They must die.” – obviously there is no hint of any wrong doing from your side.
3) The “we’re the biggest dogs in the yard and we have to prove it” method. Pick your “target”, make a diplomatic demand (in RTR’s case land) with an “Or we’ll attack”. In LRP it would be IC money. If they cave then you’re certainly the biggest dog, if they fail to comply……Vola! One excuse “we made a reasonable demand for the return of our historic/sovereign lands, who’s people are of our blood and they spat in our face! The barbarians! They must die”.
How do those sound?
No idea why it won't work - that's what you should do. The Metro mod files overwrite some in RTR Platinum.Quote:

Updated Influence table for voting:
[i]SA's EDIT: NB Gnaeus Hordeonius is assigned to Silver Rusher and Secundus Salvidienus is assigned to Ignoramus, in lieu of Sextus Antio.
No, what's this! An influence drop! ~:mecry:
Anyway, my thanks for this TinCow. You've been one of the most helpful members of this PBM
EDIT: you've not put in Tiberius Coruncanius/FLYdude's name into the Senate Library as current consul.
Just a note to say that, as previously discussed, Gnaeus Hordeonius is assigned to Silver Rusher. And in view of Ignoramus's request for a general, I am assigning him Secundus Salvidienus in lieu of Sextus Antio.
Thanks for the influence update TinCow's. :2thumbsup: I've edited it to reflect the above.
Thanks Tiberius and econ21, the mentioned changes/corrections have been made to the Library.
Ironically, I am striving for an offensive against Iberia in this campaign, while in my own campaign I am allied with the Iberians and we are fighting the Cartheginians together. :laugh4:
Braden, I would be interested if you could dig up some historical (Roman) examples of your ideas.
I'm currently reading Livy and so I remembered the following passage. It's not quite the same, but similar.Quote:

Chapter XXII
So, thinking that the nation was growing decrept from inaction, [Tullus Hostilius] everywhere sought excuses for stirring up war. It happened that the Roman rustics were driving off cattle from Alban territory, while the Albans were treating the Romans in the same way. The man who was then in power in Alba was Gaius Cluilius. Each side, at about the same time, sent envoys to demand restitution. Tullus had commanded his envoys to do nothing else till they had carried out his orders; he felt convinced that the Albans would refuse his demands, in which case he could declare war with a good conscience. The Alban representatives proceeded rather laxly. Received by Tullus with gracious and kindly hospitality, they attended in a friendly spirit the banquet which he gave in their honour. Meanwhile the Romans had been beforehand with them in seeking redress, and, being denied it by the Alban leader, had made a declaration of war, to take effect in thirty days. Returning, they reported these things to Tullus, who thereupon invited the Alban envoys to inform him of the object of their mission. They, knowing nothing of what had happened, at first spent some time in apologies. They said they should be sorry to utter anything which might give offence to Tullus, but that they were compelled to do so by their orders; they had come to seek restitution; if it should be denied them they were commanded to declare war. To this Tullus replied: "Tell your king the Roman king calls the gods to witness which people first spurned the other's demand for redress and dismissed its envoys, that they may call down upon the guilty nation all the disasters of this war."
Also, the Third Punic War started because the Romans made some crippling demands to the subdued Carthaginians, in fear that they might grow strong again, to threaten Rome's dominance over the Western Mediterranean.
Ok. SO:
I copied whole Rome Total War directory without the BI one to the D. Then installed RTR on it, patched it, and then the stupid part (What is it's matter 0-o): Metro mod. Again it made it's own structure, but anyway I took the troubple and copy-pasted each file. Then I tried to lunch after deleting map.rwm files.. And again, CRASH!
Now what is going on here !!!!
You think you've got it bad, I'm still stuck at Inf 0 ~:(Quote:

That's a very good argument GeneralHankerchief, but I think that we should begin to take a more populous stance on our affairs, by which I mean concerning ourselves with the welfare of our own people. IMO this is far more realistic than simply expansionism.
The real reason for my resignation is that I just can't stand the thought of yet another bridge battle :laugh4: . I expect Silver Rusher (Senator Gnaeus Hordeonius, a tribune in my legion) might be up for some battle experience. I'm quite interested in trying to develop my avatar as a brilliant administrator instead. Nothing of interest will happen on the western front the next few years anyway. I also feel it will be in-character for Lucius Aemilius to resign now all his plans have been voted down.
And it sure seemed to bring some activity to the debate :2thumbsup:
Oh, it will. Over the first half of my term, I found we had fewer active lower house members than the ideal number of independent armies I'd like to have had. So, I'm not letting you resign without a fight! :laugh4:Quote:

Started commanding an army again, got a Field Army banner, but did not get a new rank trait. Another strange (and perhaps related) thing is that while he gained a Field Army banner, he never lost his II Legion banner. Something seems amiss.
Field Army is given when a character is eligible for Praetor. It doesn't matter if a Legion banner is present nor will it remove a Legion banner.
As for him not getting Praetor... do we already have two of them? A quick count shows that we have 26 provinces, which would give us a max of 2 Praetors. If we already have two, then no character can get a third. If this is the case, perhaps Praetor rank should only be given by Senatorial vote.
On a side note, does anyone know how to use scripts/console commands to change diplomacy? I've searched the Org and RTR forums and none of the stuff I've found works. force_diplomacy and diplomatic_stance both seem like they could do the job, but I can't get them to actually work. I want to force a ceasefire between my faction and two others in a SP game I have going. The other two factions share no border with me and never attack me, but since they are in perpetual war with me, they don't go after anyone else, effectively removing them from the game since they don't do anything. I think making them neutral to me would make them re-analyze their position and move against their neighbors.
We have no Praetors at this time.
My only advice then would be to make sure everything is being done properly. Make sure the character is a Former Legate and does not have an active rank. Put him in the field in command of an army that includes infantry. Make sure that he has more command stars than any other general in that stack. In that situation, if he has 20 years of service, he should be promoted to Praetor as long as he has a banner of some kind on him (Legion, Field, Consular). To check, save and click through a few turns quickly to see if he gets it.
If he doesn't... ~
double post
force_diplomacy_accept?
Most of the cheats don't seem to work, though.
I have begun to realise that we are winning our battles far too easily. It is unrealistic for us to have such a huge advantage simply because we have human commanders. Come on people, think about it! If the odds on us to win battles are any less than 4-1 we win them! If we give the AI a chance in these battles then I believe it will make this PBeM far, far, far more fun to play.
And so I propose that we change the battle difficulty to either H or VH. Sure, it doesn't improve the command ability of the AI but it will force us to think much more carefully about our actions if their armies are a bit souped up. The increase in morale of Ai armies makes up fine for the lack of command strength. At the next interrim session I will propose this as an OOC motion.
Thoughts?
Bad bad idea Silver.. Just now, it takes a lot to rout a hoplite unit, and believe me, fighting it all that period with it having +9 attack, +6 defence is absurd.. It is easy in vanilla, because units rout there, but here in RTR no no bad idea..
So you would rather play a game where we have only ever lost a single battle?Quote:

I find these easy victories detract from the real spirit of the game, where we actually have to be very careful about our invasions etc. etc.
It's the only way we can deal with their stacks, which are almost as numerous as TS's spam posts.

As far as I understood it you do not get the Praetor trait, just the field army banner. Not 100 % sure about this.Quote:

If people want harder battles, I think we should fight with Praetorian armies (half stacks) except for those with the Consular army banner (only one such banner right now, two max). Maybe Field Army banners could be 3/4 stacks (Praetorian + some local troops?).
When I fought a full stack of Carthaginians in Sardinia with half a stack of my own, it was a very tense battle. The casualty figures don't really reveal it, but it could easily have gone the other way. Ditto at Apollonia - we did actually lose that, I only "won" with a timer exploit.
On VH campaigns, if we are fighting away from home, it is easy for our stacks to get whittled down by repeated full stacks of AI troops. Marching a Praetorian army into southern Greece would be very risky, for example.
I think Silver Rusher is still in the Upper House - when he installs the mod, I'm happy to move him down. The Massila ford sounds a perfect posting for a budding Tribune. Mount Suribachi and x-DANGEr fit the bill. Quintus or his successor would be up for it too.Quote:

Are you after recomendations for Roman themed entertainment?
Read: The 6 books in Colleen McCulloughs Masters of Rome series. She's a bit too much of a Julius Caeser fanboy, but I thoroughly enjoyed the books.
Watch: The recent BBC/HBO series "Rome", don't think its out on DVD yet though. Very good (once you get past the first episode which is more like a porn flick with all the gratuitous sex).
I'll check into the Masters of Rome. Thanks !Quote:

Hi everyone, DL'ed RTR.
How do I add the traits to Quintus and co.? I can only find the 'notConsul' trait in the export_descr traits file.
Which traits do you mean and why ?Quote:

I think econ found a way to add them in, but I can't find those traits in the export_descr_character_traits file.
EDIT: btw, the link to the Parthian/Bactrian and African landblocks mods is out of date/broken.
The traits are not from RTR, they are from the 4TPY mod, which you have to install after RTR.
Okay, thanks a lot TinCow.
The 4TPY mod is included in the M&N mod, so no need to add it if you arre going to install that also.
A good thread on cavalry charges in RTR. Perhaps good to include in the FAQ :

For those upper house senators who want to become lower house senators :
The new (and probably final) version of RTR, 1.6, has come out. Unfortunately this means that the original links to RTR 1.4 and the upgrade to 1.5 are down. I've requested the links will be reinstated in some way or other and will keep you informed. We will not be using the new RTR 1.6 as I am not confident it is savegame compatible.
If getting the old files becomes a big problem for anyone, let me know and I will investigate whether the Org can host them. But let's try DDW's way - getting the providers to keep them up - first.
If we can't get an alternate download source, I will upload my copies to Rapidshare for people to use.
nice to see such civic-minded people around :~)
I found an interesting comment on the settings for rebel spawn value.
Quote 1 :
To the original question, it's in data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\descr_strat.txt. However, this value appears to do NOTHING in 1.2-based mods, so if you're using RTR Gold it will not have any effect on your game whatsoever. It is fixed with the 1.5 patch, however, but note that you need to increase the value in order to lower the chances of brigands/pirates spawning. It's a bit backwards I know, but that's the RTW engine for you...
Quote 2 :
The higher the number, the less rebels. I put mine to 1000. No more brigands or pirates.
So it seems I was wrong and it does have an effect after all. It was just my mistake to decrease the spawn value, thereby increasing the amount of rebels :wall: :laugh4:
It seems I'm spamming like crazy
Umm... I'm confused.
So we're upgrading to 1.5, with the Metropolis, Naval, 4TPY and Landblock mods right?
I can't find the landblock, the link is broken.
Hey guys, I didn't get to play the campaign over the weekend, but it's underway now. First report probably tomorrow.
As far as the discussion about difficulty on the last page goes, I'd agree with econ's assessment that we should stay away from numerous full-stack armies. I've done some reogranization, and by the time I'm done, Legions should be strictly half-stack, and I reckon I won't activate the Consular Army unless there's a really major offensive. In any case, don't be surprised if you fight your next battle with half the troops you fought your previous battle with.
1. Install RTR 1.4Quote:

4. Install the landblock
5. Delete all map.rwm files in the Total War folder (and its subfolders)
The 4TPY mod, latest EDU's, Command Bonus mod and whatnot is already included in the M&N mod, so you do not need to install it seperately.
The moderators were not about to host 600MB of outdated files on their machines and I can't blame them.
I think it might be best if we uploaded all the files to RapidShare so we have stable access and links to the correct files. I have everything on my machine so I will start uploading tonight after I figure out how it works :)
The 1.6 download thread states the following:
I am going to make a duplicate of my 1.5 directory and install 1.6 and the sub-mod updates over it. I will then play through the current save for a while and report the results.Quote:
RTR Platinum v1.6 should be savegame compatible with campaigns started with the v1.5 patch. To get full use of all the updates/fixes though, especially the CTD fixes, it is highly recommended that you start a new campaign.
Here is a short list of the updates/fixes that will require a new campaign to be seen in-game. You can use this list to decide if you wish to update at this time and start a new campaign, or finish your current campaign, then update to the new v1.6 release.
a. The campaign map fixes for positioning of the city garrisons for Aleria (Corsica), Antioch (Syria), Flaviobrigia (Cantabria), and Astorga (Gallaecia) within their city.
b. The addition of Gigantus' Harbour Fix and Asia Minor/African Land Blocks Compilation to RTR Platinum.
c. The AI Building/Unit Construction Biases Tweaks that were added to the new descr_strat.txt file.
d. The correction to the town of Arse's (Edetanus) defenses from "stone walls" to "wooden palisades", like all other barbarian culture towns
e. Enabling the "night_battles_enabled" in the descr_strat.txt file. This will allow the AI to conduct night battles once its characters gain the night-fighting ability, like the player characters will.
I found this posted in the 4TPY thread as well. A rather useful reference tool.

Nice, but incorrect. The banners of a legion and a field army are swapped. The consul army description should read : Start with one Consular Army. Is this perhaps the 1.9.3 version instead of the 1.9.1 version we are using of the 4TPY mod ? I've yet to read up on the improvements.
EDIT : Forgot to upload to Rapidshare as it is SF week on one of the local channels and Sigourney Weaver has been keeping me captivated. Aliens must the best diety-of-choice-damned SF action movie ever made. Argh, they're showing a ton of good movies this week. Another week without sleep :laugh4:
1.9.3 improvements from the readme:
Quote:
Release of v1.9.3 of this mod updates it to be compatible with the RTR Platinum v1.6 release. It also implements a few new trigger conditions, for several traits, that should hopefully correct the "Coming of Age" duplicate traits problem from previous versions. Its not fully tested, but so far they have not appeared. Further extended campaign testing will be needed to verify this. I have also included copies of RepMan's awesome reference documents concerning my Roman Leadership System. I highly recommend reading through them to better understand the system involved. They include in document form my own current Roman Leadership System Notes. Many thanks to RepMan (RTR Forums) for this much appreciated assistance! You will find these informative documents in the "Rome - Total War\Docs\Marcus Camillus' 4tpy Mod ReadMe\Roman Leadership System Info" sub-folder of your RTR Platinum install.
So what about the landblock?
Also, when I deleted map.rwm, I couldn't launch the game, I could only do so when I restored it.
You know, I'll just stay upper house for now.. it's too confusing.
:sweatdrop:
EDIT: by the way, how do you delete 'Former Legate' and 'Military Service - 8 Years' from the 16 year olds who come of age? They (2/3 of them) have both got it in my campaign.
By the way, this one's very interesting. Macedon has practicaly wiped out lllyria apart from one city, which was besieged by a full stack until I diverted their attention. The Greeks were gone long ago, and the Balkans practically belong to the Macedonians. The Selucids have destroyed Parthia in the east. I'm struggling to defend myself in the Northern forts, being attacked in three of them: two by Gauls, one by a Macedonian stack. :scared:
The Macedonians should be our next target, fighting stack after stack of hoplites is not fun at all, so we should deal with them quickly.
Ok, it looks like 1.6 won't work. I tried installing 1.6 directly over the current install and that made the game CTD when I tried to load the save. Loading the save from a fresh installation made the game hang at the loading screen and required a reboot. Thus, updating to 1.6 doesn't seem to work with 1.5 save games, or at least with our save games.
However, I also tried installing the 4TPY mod version 1.9.3 over the top of our existing 1.5 installation. I then clicked through until characters came of age and they no longer spawned with the buggy traits. When I did the same with the 1.9.2 version (what we currently run) the buggy traits were present. I noticed no errors when installing 1.9.3 over the top of RTRPE 1.5. Since we will be having a large number of family members coming of age in the second half of this consulship and in the next few consulships, I highly recommend that all Lower House players update the 4TPY mod to version 1.9.3. If we do not, the buggy trait family members will continue to spawn.
Instructions to install 4TPY 1.9.3:
1) Download 1.9.3 from here.
2) Extract the files.
3) Install the mod into your RTRPE 1.5 folder.
Easy!
As a side note, in my game (clicking through about 8-10 turns) things got very interesting. I'm sure things won't proceed in our save exactly the same way, but if they do we may have to re-evaluate our Macedonian, Illyrian, Carthaginian and Iberian policies!
can i still join upper house?
We'll get something reorganized this week and then things will become easier and everything will be downloaded from a stable link at Rapidshare or something. I'll make a bundle of all the relevant files and zip it in one monster file so we will have one link with all you need. It will be 500-600 MB or so I think.Quote:
