Re: EB Unit Development Art
You really should incorporate some of Caratacos' art into some loading screens because I've learned the Calawre, Cingetos and Cohors Reformata ones by heart. And I think these types of loading screens, the ones describing the units and their equipment in depth are the best. Not that I have something against the ones made up of maps
And more quotes would also be great, the Celtic ones from the "Cycles" are just awesome.

Re: EB Unit Development Art
Meanwhile...
Someone asked to see my sketches aways back... so here's a progression of how things work... sort of...
Saka Elite/Heavy Cataphract:
https://img340.imageshack.us/img340/...ycatxx7.th.jpghttps://img85.imageshack.us/img85/23...cataen0.th.jpghttps://img340.imageshack.us/img340/...ractwe5.th.jpg... and then colour (abviously)
As you can see there were a few changes-- mainly to the horse armour.
Hayasdan General:
https://img85.imageshack.us/img85/62...etchsu7.th.jpghttps://img227.imageshack.us/img227/...albwmk7.th.jpg
I wasn't vey happy with the horse in this one. I still aren't but it does look a helluva lot better than the orignal (as you can no doubt see).... ughhhh
Pontos General:
https://img89.imageshack.us/img89/66...ral2oe5.th.jpghttps://img81.imageshack.us/img81/42...eralff7.th.jpg
This one actually had pretty much been designed (after a very lengthy discussion) and didn't require any real changes in design-- Thanks again, Dave :wink2:.
Unfortunately as I have other commitments and do this in my spare time they were a little bit too rushed for my liking. If I could redo them I'd definitely tidy up the scale armour a bit (particularly the Pontos Gen.).
So yeah... they start off really ugly and then I sort of hammer out most (not all) of the ugly bits until i'm happy (though never totally happy) with them.

Re: EB Unit Development Art
Excellent work - all of the immages.
Have you ever thought about making some faction based wallpapers using these? The wallpapers I tried to do aren't much more than bad jokes ^^
But I got a question: Were do I find a complete immage of that Gaestatae holding the head of a former enemy in his left?
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
That image was removed and is no longer available.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Censorship, y'know, for those who can't take a guy waving a piece of flesh. And I don't mean the head.
...Well, maybe I do, just a different sort, wot?
Too bad there's no modesty patch for this, I would've liked that Gaesatae on my desktop.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
What a pity - and it is really not aviable anymore? Not even on sides the EB-Team isn't responsible for and couldn't be harmed for a picture showing a naked "Barbarian"? ^^
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
OK
Whats the difference between the unit art....and michael angelos david. Both are unashamed, art, historical, not in anyway pornographic or 'silly'. Next thing we'll have to cover up any naked knees shown in the unit art!
Sorry but this type of pithyness is a load of bollocks....in both senses :).
I vote for his reinstatement.....bollocks to the prissy brigade!!
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
What does a knee have to do with a willy? I agree with you in terms of historical accuracy since these warriors fought in the nude or close to it. The original way the EB team posted the picture was in a spoiler so anybody could choose whether they wanted to see the picture or not. I think that this way was fair.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Not going to happen.
The spoiler didn't work on the TWC, we knew we were taking a risk in putting it up, there were complaints, so we, as a courtesy, withdrew the image. Perhaps, and I'm not sure about this, we could give the image by pm to someone who requested it.
We'll see.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Guys, this mattered has been considered by the team, and decided upon. No use talking about it. If you dislike us for acting this way, it is too bad. I DO believe there are other marvelous things both EB, and Caratacos have shown throughout the time Caratacos has joined our ranks. Absolutely no use talking about this issue because nothing is going to happen.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Besides, there's no real reason for it not to appear on the official EB site in the future.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
But the audience demands fan service ! :biker:

It won't be being released to the public. Whilst EB does contain naked fanatics, its not something that we wish to advertise with. Regardless of our own feelings on the matter we must be aware that others do find such images offensive. We won't be changing things on the inside, we assume people have agreed to the past in all its nakedness when playing, but when we advertise EB we must be aware of the public's sentiment when confronted with such pictures.
This is a decision that the entire EB team came to after much deliberation. Comments and complaints had been made, and we decided that it was better to remove the picture than to alienate valued fans. Thats all really. Besides, Caractacos never really liked the anatomy of that figure, it was never supposed to be released to the public.

Re: EB Unit Development Art
It's a slightly weird commentary on current values that normal, inert male genetalia are regarded as more shocking - and deserving of censorship - than the bleeding, severed head of a recently-killed man.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
I don't understand what the deal is...
The EB team had to deal with the Political Correctnes without getting into trouble so they took out the full Gaestae. Good decition.
Sure, we are all pissed, but thats the way things are and we got to deal with them. EB does not have any political agenda with regards to social constrains, so it does well with steering clear of them.
It would be kind of cool if the whole picture where posted with a long back area covering the genitalia and with the words CENSORED printed in white. THAT WOULD BE FUNNY AS HELL!!!!...:laugh4: maybe put it out as an inside joke for EB memebers and fans.
Anywho... food for thought fellas.....

Re: EB Unit Development Art
Nate posted some great insights above into how he makes the images, and one person responded, and someone brings up that we took down one image a few weeks ago and suddenly there is a flood here? Bah. Drop it. The thing that disappoints me more is that this is more response than his art itself usually gets on this public forum.

Indeed, I'd thought the last "preview" would get more response as well... Apparently not. (*Grins realising the possibility there'll be fans searching everywhere but the right place for it*)

We are using his work as concept art for new units, so he hasn't really drawn any pre-existing units (except when they were to be used solely for sig banners). He won't be drawing a pezhetairoi anytime soon, and I don't think there are any macedonian units on the cards at the moment.

Re: EB Unit Development Art
Badass looking! I especially like the expression on his face, that really breathes life to the picture. But what is this unit, some kind of iranic hillman? Obviously a light skirmisher type.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Yay, more angry hillmen with axes ! I like those units.
Since the ones around the Iranian plateau and Hindu Kush are already covered (with the Kavkaza and Verkhana Kofyaren), are these guys from somewhere more to the west ? I recall the Pontic opening text referring to "axes of the interior" or something along those lines...
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
That is undoubtedly the first axe i've seen in the artwork so far. It chills my blood. :) Swords and spears are getting a bit boring just now...
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Cool!!!!! Nice work!
How I would like to be able to draw like that!

I would like to see them at Pontus, I've played an little with them an I felt the lack of hillmens...
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
The name in any case has a rather "Persian" or "Median" ring to it - tabar being the type of battleaxe mentioned with the Mada Asabara, and "eranshahr" also featuring in the Eranshahr Arshtabara spearman-archers. I'm guessing the unit name would translate to something along the lines of "tabar-wielding light infantry".
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Yay another Iranian infantry unit! I hope these guys have good moral cuse I'll be using lots of them!:laugh4: I also love the expression on his face and the way his hair kinda seeps out of his....whats it called? Burnoose?:embarassed:
@Watchman:In case you were wondering, Eranshahr means "Kingdom/Realm of I/Eran". Though I'm sure that was obvious I just thought I'd mention it.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Right, "shah" as in "king". Duh me. Although in the context wouldn't that be more of "XYZ of the Kingdom", these being terms related to soldiers and warriors ?
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Actually while you were close a few times Watchman, you are not entirely correct, though it's always pleasant as well as interesting to see how other people reason around foreign names. Like The Celt says (Well, I expect no less from one of the developers of Rise of Persia) Êrânshahr means dominion of the Iranians where Êr or Êrânagî means "noble" or "descended from the nobles - Iranian). Today, Iran does mean "Home of the Aryans", and it is derived from Êrânshahr, in which Shahr means city, or more ambiguously land. Shahrdâr, is the "lord of the land", and is therefore quite synonymous with Shâh which means king, and of course, Shâhanshâh, King of Kings, is the Iranian equivalent to emperor. Tabargânê Êrânshahr (Which can be typed Tabargân î Êrânshahr as well) means "Axe-bearers of Êrânshahr" - Iranian axemen. These are meant to be axemen available throughout the entire Iranian plataeu, or at least where there are mountains.
Unlike Verkhânâ Kofyaren, which is meant to be a pretty unique specialist light infantry unit available for recruit from the Elburz mountains only (The prototype of the dreaded Dailamite heavy infantry of the Sassanid fame), this is a declining form of light infantry, still wearing kyrbasia, along with the traditional Iranian highlander garb. The shield motif for instance is a clan standard, signifying that this man is a Bandegân or Bandakâ, a bondsman, under the service of a noble, who has provided him with this equipment. He therefore reminds the avid eye of the classical Achaemenid Takabara infantry. Unfortunately, except for this tough-looking guy, these will not be high-end troops; They are perfect for highland combat and ambushes, however they will rot against Hellenic and Roman infantry types, so this is no core infantry. Parthian usage of infantry points at only special moments and/or garrison utility.
One pat on the shoulder, the name does indeed have an Iranian ring to it; It's Pahlavî. Historically, the area around Hyrcania was traditionally called Tapuria, something that evolved into Tabaristân during the end of the Sassanid dynasty. This guy, excepting the technicalities, may be the very forefather of the Dailamites who held off the muslims from the Elburz mountains :egypt:

Re: EB Unit Development Art
Eranshahr - Iranian... yeah, I can see the connection now that you've pointed it out.
I am humbled and now that much better informed. I did occasionally wonder what that word actually meant.
While we're at it, what's the "-bara" in for example Arshtabara and Asabara mean ? A generic term for soldier/warrior ?
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
I think it means bearer, as the translation of Sparabara is "Shieldbearer".

@TPC
Why we don't use "Dar" instead of "Bar" (bara) for some units? I mean for example We say "Neizeh dar"(Spearman) Not "Separbar" (Shiealbearer) in nowadays Parsi. I know old Parsi is different in some aspects from nowadays Parsi ,But the basics are still the same I think. In my opinion ,"Sparabara" comes from the direct translation of english word shieldbearer while I think we don't use and say ShieldBearer in Prasi. So I think "Neizeh-dar" is more appropriate and acceptable for at least we Iranians instead of "Sparabara" (Or 'Separbar' in present time Parsi).
Thanks
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Ok, Kambiz you don't need to rub it in; Watchman is in essence correct, as when Êrânshahr is used as a suffix to designate origin (Of Iran or Êrân-Vâëg) it will mean "Iranian", so no need for absolutism.

It is used in the same manner as -dâr and -gân ownership suffixes. It designates physical load, possession or bearing. To be honest, I wasn't around when Sharrukin, gave the name to the cheap Iraian light infantry - Êrânshahr Arshtibarâ; This is actually a very regal designation and means spear-bearer (In Achaemenid terms one of the Shâhanshâh's closest companions). Asabarâ, or Asâvarân (Evolving to Savârân) means "Keeper of the horse" and subsequently "rider" or "horseman".
Soldier is however a different designation; Arteshtdâr, Lashkarîg, Payâhdag (Foot-soldier).

I must digress; We speak of a transitional period between the Achaemenid and Sassanid dynasties, and as such, we'd much rather witness a lingual bridge, a gradual change between Old Persian and Middle Persian, and since the mod starts quite early into Seleucid Iran, I think we have been very consistent with naming our units. Of course, diversity plays a role as well. We may rename some units in the close future, but not out of lingual, but designatory reasons.
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
I didn't (As you indicated) rub it in. I just wanted to make it clear. It is true that Êrânshahr as a suffix could be meant Iranian as well ,But the word alone means Iran as you specified before.
Ok I forgot the mod begins at 272 (At the reign of seleucids). Thanks for Clarification TPC.

How very sad...
So we will never see some elite assault troops like Dismounted Late Cataphracts? =)
-
Re: EB Unit Development Art
Well, if there was a practical means of dismounting them in the midst of combat, the tactical flexibility of cataphracts could be increased, but a single unit of dismounted cataphracts? No, I'm afraid not. The only period in Iranian history where we hear of heavily armoured infantry is during the age of Sassanid emperor Chosroës I, where he fields Soghdian heavy infantry, and some sort of a Byzantine legion copy, which reminds more of a Sassanid light clibanarius, such as among the "Waralz" (Wild boars, a regiment formed by late Sassanid period). Now these troops were tactically flexible; They carried bows, shields, spears, swords and possibly even mace making them very versatile. Some even dare to claim that late Sassanid infantry was heavier than the Maurikian Byzantine counterpart. Personally, I've never favoured infantry.
However, that will by no means dismiss the possibility of Parthians getting strong auxiliary foot that may serve as a strong garrison. Perhaps even two? Just be patient

Re: EB Unit Development Art
I have just realized that that wonderfull drawing of Pontic general was finally moddeled into the game. (as it is presented in the June preview).
And the word "wow" Is the one that comes to my mind. Really amazing work, thumbs up. It looks great and it is the exact copy of this wonderfull picture from this therad even those tiny details, I am really amazed by the work of both - artist and moddeler.
I cant wait for the nex built. To play for a Pontic Kingdom.

Re: EB Unit Development Art
You'll see in the next build that Caratacos' drawing of the Pontic general was incorporated another way too - as the image of the statue of the Pontic king that Pontos can build in its cities.

Re: EB Unit Development Art
Whoa, I didn't say on the battlemap. It's a 2D drawing - it is turned into a statue for the 2D constructed image (the big rectangular one) for the Pontic King's Statue building - we still have very little ability to do anything on the battlemap in terms of modelling. It's still cool, cooler than the default roman barracks image for sure, but not as cool as having real battlemap statues would be.

Re: EB Unit Development Art
They're North African fellows, and therefore a Qarthadasht regional unit. While nowadays it's all desert there, back in 272 BCE Garama/Germa and its environs was actually pretty well-off, agriculturally speaking, due to cunning Garamantae irrigation systems which, unfortunately, drew on fossil water tables. This meant that there was no rejuvenation of the water table, and sometime around 500-700 CE they ran out of water, which combined with climate change to make the land quite inhospitable.

Depends on when they get done. We have a lot of cool units that haven't been drawn out since we have enough information on them. There was a particular one that Paullus showed us based on a grave stele. We thought it was so cool that we gave it immediate priority to be completed. In fact, it's already done.
The Indo-Greek Noble Hoplite is being worked on, but there are some tricky things coming up with the model that we're using. I think they have been resolved though so that is good news.
