What do dogs and pigs do? How do they help in a war?
they don't help, just look awesome, and they are good weapons against Cavalry and Elephants. Pigs=Scare Elephants Dogs=Scare Horses
I found Wardogs to be generally useful against most troop types (although heavy infantry generally held up fairly well against them.) Those puppies are simply a canine "fire-and-forget" missile -- just sic 'em on the enemy and let them do their thing. Yes, they're a fantasy unit, but even I have to admit they were fun to watch. ~D
For MTW/VI:
Some of mine have already been mentioned. Namely:
Swabian Swordsmen
Heavy Steppe Cavalry
Armenian Cavalry
Some others I didn't see yet:
1) Viking Landsmen (upgraded vikings, cheap and easy to build in Scandinavia by any faction.)
2) Avar Nobles (Disciplined, early era heavy cavalry with great armour and defense. Only made in Moldavia.)
3) Lithuanian Cavalry (Not really worth the building requirements, but an often over-looked feature is being able to dismount as archers. Which is great if you don't want to drag around a unit of archers, just in case you might need them).
4) Woodsmen (use them in the woods, or send them around the flanks and deliver one of the best (and cheapest) armor piercing charges in the game. All at a production cost of 75 florins, plus a valour bonus in Lithuania. I love these guys.)
1. Kerns: How I love to see Husacerls armed to the teeth die under a hail of missiles from barefooted peasants
OA
Does anyone know why Janisary Heavy Inf. are as good as they are? There states are comical but that didn't stop them from mopping the floor with Spanish Conquistadors in my custom battle tests.
In actually history, war-dogs were used to tear out the throats of the enemy etc. Such a pleasant way to go, don't you think?Quote:

I was really surprised, if you build in Defnas the best horse breeding building, you have valour 3 Medium Cav. I don't know if there is a place which produce +1 valour Mounted nobles... And If I'm correct, the Medium Cav is 6/3/0/4 (Charge, atk, def, morale) and nobles 6/4/2/8, but the 3 valour med cav are 6/6/3/10!!!! So if there is no way to start the mounted noble with +1valour, they are surpassed by those cav!!! (and actually, with the +1, they're equalled...)
And another piece of candy: there is iron in Defnas....
And you are more than correct: as for every cavalry unit in VI, charging head-on is very dangerous :smash: I remember my first game with VI, I unleashed royal bodyguards on an infantry unit, and was taking care of something else, thinking the bodyguards a bit like those in normal MTW. A few moments later, I stood corrected: only 2 guys remained of the unit, and they were loosing. A shock when you're used to those "invincible" knights...
The Janissary Corps were the elite of the Ottoman Empire, arguably the most powerful single nation/empire of the time period, and the Janissary Heavy Infantry represent some of the most heavily armed and highly trained soldiers of this Corps. If you're talking about MTWII I can't say anything about the specific unit, but in MTW they were one of the best if not the best infantry unit in the game, and they certainly deserved to be one of the best infantry units.Quote:

So those guy could probably kill a lot of horses...
Oh, that's what they did against the french knights in Nicopoli, 1396 AD.
Well, I play MTW: VI, my favorite units include JHI and JI, Armenian Heavy cavalry, Avar Nobles, Szekely, Nizaris, and Swiss halberdiers. Also, I love to use naptha throwers on occasion, those guys can be a blast to use(literally!)

I’m predominately playing Medieval II nowadays, and usually as the Byzantine Empire, so I found the Vardariotai (a combination of cavalry and missile unit) to be a nice compliment to any army. I’ve used them frequently to draw out the enemy when they are entrenched, or to move behind the enemy lines to where they can fire on the enemy general’s bodyguard, or on his artillery units, and later charge them.
The fact that Vardariotai have dual offensive skills comes in handy, because you can use them as missile units early on and then later rely on them for melee combat. They are relatively cheap and can be recruited early in a campaign, so overall they are a decent unit to possess.
ok you guys now we are all doing really well in this thread so lets try and get to 8 pages! ay wat do ya say huh? tell all ya friends to come over here and tell us theres awesome you guys keep at it.
P.S. i would also recommend 'Call Of Duty2 which has great graphics and is preety cheap now, and aslo has a good multiplayer system!

Gotta be Noble Scythian Horse Archers. Mobility, firepower, good morale, powerful melee.
My favorite unit is the Clibinarii from the Sassanids (BI). They are good quality bowmen, heavily armoured and mounted on heavily armoured horses. Thus they can outshoot pretty much everybody. Then, when you want to charge, use their "alt" attack for clubs, and rout the enemy!
Ok, I suppose I'll elaborate on my choices previous:
JHI: Really, do I have to say? Pure, utter domination.
Janissary Infantry: Archers who are equivalent to CMAA in hand to hand, but w/ less armor.
Armenian Heavy Cavalry: Easy to start pumping them out w/ extra 2 valor, makes them awesome, especially in early. Also, they have a great charge.
Avar Nobles: Khwarzmian Cavalry, but available much earlier and are out of the desert. Plus they're disciplined.
Szekely: HA w/ good morale, good melee, a good charge(for a HA), available VERY early, and extremely fast. In combination w/ AN, Hungarians can field all cav armies until the high period w/ good success.
Nizaris: Bow w/ shield makes them good duelers. Crazy high attack with an insane charge bonus(it's even better than ghazis), so you can use them as great flankers once you're done firing arrow.
Swiss Halberdiers: Pretty much everything about them is good, except for the charge bonus, but they get bonuses against armor and cav, making them extremely versatile. Much more useful for a regular army than ordinary halberdiers.
And a recent addition, Gothic Knights: An unbelievable sledgehammer, everything just seems to bounce off them. Did a test run of lancers vs GK and the lancers just bounced off, even though they went to a wedge.
I would have to say that Cataparhcts (sorry for the spelling error) horse archers, elephanhts and chairiots are the best becasue in terms of sheer damage they can cause espally when it comes to killing spearmen.
Vanilla: Sacred Band. Look awesome and fight awesome too
EB: Gestate. Drugged up nudist killing machines. What's not to love.
M2: Retinue Longbowmen. Like a D&D Ranger on a medieval battlefield
ok on r:tw i say my top five (not in order) are:
1.Spartan hoplites... i tried them like in 300 exept i had 320 men and the enemy had like 3000 soldiers -hillmen/eastern infantry- i killed 83% of them lost 13 men V/H battle 9 expeirence/3weapon/3armor for all units spartan or other. then i sent them against 7 full selucid armys of elephants lost 298 men but still won with 78% of enemy dead same as before exp/wpn/armor face it they pwn ~:pimp:

My favourite are Cathaprchts, they look and sre great.Same goes for Praetorian Cavalry
buddhist monks
Good answer, Vlad! I should've thought of that one myself.
Mine would have to be a Spartan unit from a RTW mod called XGM or extended greek mod. The spartans just look so awsome and are obviously killing machines.
The spartan or Early legionary cohort, cant decide.
