Thank you all *bows* for your good words! As for your side-story satalexton, I would very much appreciate it if you could send in to me first through pm before posting it. The Synedrion will be called upon again soon, so be ready:wink:
Anyway, here is a little treat for you guys:

In the first one, you can see that Pergamon is doing good. They had a fullstack just standing outside Pergamon, but they recently attacked Nikaia and took control of it. This may turn out to be more interesting than I thought...
In the second one, you can see the new army the Karchedonioi have raised and shipped over to Italia, threatening Rome herself. If things get too ugly, I will probably teleport a good commander with a sizable army there to drive them out.
You can take this information as given when the Synedrion is called upon again:wink:

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
[This happens during the time of "A New Leader".]
"Sir, a messenger, from the heir of House Airetikos."
"Take him to the main hall. I'll be there shortly."
Alexandros stood up, glazed at his xiphos, as though a thought had poped into his head. Before the thought could formulate into anything coherant, he shook his head and lazily walked out of his room.
The messenger presented himself to the prince. "I am here to bring forth a message to your greatness, under the order of Ischryos Airetikos," the scales on his linothorax cringled as he bowed. The prince saw no haste in listening to whatever message the half-bred heir has brought to him. Resting his arms on his seat, he began, "What is your name, and what is the crest upon your greave?"
"Kalos, sire. The alpha and epsilon, sire."
"You saw the phalangitai stationed within here, what is on their shields?"
"The alpha and epsilon, sire."
The mark of those within the House of Airetikos. Men who swore fidelity to the basileus of Makedonia to the ends of terra.
"Honour to the house, Glory for Makedonia, For the Basileus to the ends of Terra is it not?" Alexandros narrowed his eyes. Straight-minded, Kalos promptly replied, "Yes, such is our House's mission and motto." He bowed slightly. *click*, the scales on his armour rubbed against one other. Slightly irritated by the messenger's blunt honesty, Alexandros went straight to the point.
"Your Heir marches his men upon Tylis, is he willing to go as far as killing his own clansmen, to apprehend me back to Pella? Or are you here to convince me with his message? Worse off, doust thou intend to stir the men of Airetikos within here, to bring me back in chains?" He remembered the thought from earlier. No messenger meant no message and no mutiny, and there's nothing wrong in rounding up a few renegade thraikioi clad in stolen Makedonian arms...
Clearly, oblivious to the danger he is in, Kalos gave his reply, "Master's message brings nothing on such topic, and bringing this message is my one and only mission." Bluntly, before Alexandros could even utter a word, he continued. "Ischryos Airetikos bring this message: If lord Alexandros wishes to live up to his name, he must take the appropiate actions. That is all, sire."
Alexandros, spoke nothing. Kalos, straight-minded he is, bows once more, "My purpose is fulfilled, I shall take my leave." His linothorax is clearly too big for him. Taking Alexandros' nod into deep thought as an acknowledgement, he makes for the door.
"Wait, Kalos."
"Yes Your Greatness?", bronze scales clicking again.
"Who do you serve?"
"The Basileus, to the ends of Terra." Kalos recited.
Alexandros closed his eyes.
"Tell your heir, I'll be coming back to Pella. Give the men time to pack the gold talants into carts."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"We're all ready sir"
"Excellent, Kalos."
"Strength and honour, sir."
The sky is clear, the grass rustling against the gentle breeze. Ischryos gazed towards the sun, a shadowy halo, he thought. It's going to get foggy soon.
"Save us a few trophies boy!" said a rhomphiaphoroi.
"Don't steal all the fun!" retorted a Hypaspistai.
"You only have one neck and 4 limbs, there's no need for that many torcs!" Antigonos added.
"FIVE limbs, boy...Five."
"-That- limb ain big enough for torcs!" Ischyros jested back. Everybody roared into laughter.
"Here they come men, prepare yourselves!" Alkyoneus' ambition is clearly reflected in his enthusiasm for battle. The Getai poured down, looking like an over grown brown bush.
"MAKEDONES NIKATOR!!!!" Ischyros bellowed, waving his own rhomphia in the air.
The pezhetairoi banged their cornel wood pikes against their shields, The hyaspitai followed with their swords.
ALL HAIL MAKEDONIA!!!

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
When Alkyoneus left Dardanoia for Pella, he knew something had to be done in order to control the region. As such, he left a sizable portion of his army along with adviser to rule the region, declaring Dardanoia a Nomos Symmachos Emphrouros.
http://img01.picoodle.com/img/img01/...1m_80e346a.png
In Tylis, things weren’t any better. While Alexandros did show much respect towards the barbaroi, they still preferred independence. For that, Alkyoneus decided to declare Odrysai an independent allied state with Tylis as it’s capital. The region’s control went over to a hellenized barbarian named Iolaos, who was under the direct control of Alkyoneus.
http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/...2m_317ed8f.png
Within the Basileion, news of the coming of age of Alkyoneus' firstborn son, Perseus, spread quickly. Unfortunately for Alkyoneus though, his son was not as great as he would hope. He was a rather dull man, without much interest in either wine nor the art of combat. Hardly a true Makedon, though he had a certain fondness for learning. As such, his father arranged his to be transported ti Athenai, where he would be taught by the best tutors. Hopefully he would turn out to be an able governor in the future at least.

In the outside world, the Seleukidai where once again acknowledged worldwide as the most advanced faction. It is a blessing from the gods indeed that we remain allied with our mighty brothers of the east.
http://img02.picoodle.com/img/img02/...4m_3f501bb.png
In the west, the Romaioi managed to successfully repel the Karchedonian strategos who had landed near Rome herself. The Roman strategos was a young and promising man named Servius, who was awarded much fame and riches after his victory. While the Karchedonioi still keep a foothold on Apoulia, their days in Italia are surely numbered.
http://img29.picoodle.com/img/img29/...5m_4e4be45.png
By the end of Theros of the 518th year after the First Olympiad (Summer, 258BC), Alkyoneus was triumphantly marching within Pella with his army. He, Ischyros, Antigonos Aiginios and Stratokles where the first to march within the Makedonian capital, with the rest of the army following behind and Alexandros being escorted by a handful of Hypaspistai. Most of the people where cheering for Alkyoneus, welcoming him back as a conquering hero.
Antigonos Gonatas himself was present on his throne moved near the Agora of the polis, where the parading army halted after a walk through the streets. When Alkyoneus neared Antigonos, his father stood up gave him his scepter in a symbolic deed that in truth meant that he was already passing over his rule to his son.
Before the season was over, Alkyoneus had to face new problems. Two rebellious figures had risen to power against the Basileion, both of them openly questioning rightful Makedonian rule. The first and strongest was a Hellen named Pythion, from a polis in Thessalia. The other was a man named Genuos from shores of Epeiros. Both obtained power by gathering followers, but clearly the boldest o the two was Pythion. He was the one to openly challenge Alkyoneus, while Genuos' army was a mare raiding army.
http://img29.picoodle.com/img/img29/...6m_0d57d17.png
Alkyoneus, while still hiding behind his father’s figure, wanted to make it clear that he would not tolerate any such behavior. Having all his forces gathered within Pella, he decided to personally lead 13.140 Makedones against Pythion and his 5.535. Furthermore, he sent one of his commanders, Eulandros, along with 5.385 men in order to deal with Genuos. Before the season was over, every rebellion was drowned with brutal efficiency.

Both Pythion and Genuos where captured and, after publicly being humiliated in the streets of Pella, finally executed. When the first snowflakes started falling on the earth, Alkyoneus called upon the next Synedrion...

Gosh! Perseus' face really does look dull. :laugh4:

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Ha, yes doesn't it? It's a shame indeed, as I've had at least a decent Perseus in my previous campaigns, while this time he's almost utterly useless... Must have been (maybe even still in our days) a real shame to have such a son at that time!

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Beginning of the Synedrion, 258BC
There was a lot of murmur and general uneasiness within the marble walls of the Synedrion, with many of the Synedroi having loud discussion with each other, as well the occasional shouts. Doubtlessly, the source of this uneasiness was caused by the prescence of the mail-clad and heavily armored tall men who stood in the perimeter of the chamber - clearly part of the Hypaspistai squadron – as almost every Synedros was taking occasional glimpses at them.
http://img33.picoodle.com/img/img33/...sm_826533b.gif
One of the few Synedroi who remained almost completely silent, where Diophantos and Alkyoneus, who was sitting to his left. The latter seemed almost as though he was pleased with the whole situation, constantly bearing a faint smile and sinister glow in his eyes. Only when the situation seemed to begin getting out of hand, did Alkyoneus raise his right hand and the Hypaspistai started bashing their aspis with their their dory's.
Silence returned once again to the Synedrion and only when no one was talking anymore, did Diophantos rise up and address the Synedroi:
“Noble sympatriotai, it pleases me most to see you all here today. As you may know, our beloved Basileus has once again called upon the Synedrion in order to discuss the current affairs of the Basileion.”
Before he could continue, a medium-sized man with a stubby posture and clean-shaved face stood up and shouted:
“Basileus? Maybe you mean your lord, Alkyoeneus? Or maybe you already think of him as our Basileus without Antigonos even formally having declared his heir?”
Many of the Synedroi stood up and shouted in approval of the person who just spoke. Diophantos, showing slight signs of irritation, lifted his right arm and once again the Hypaspistai caused the chamber to fall silent. He then continued:
“Noble Menelaos, once again your tongue goes ahead of your mind. You should check that, or...”
“Are you threatening me, Diophantos? Cause if you are, I assure you that...” Menelaos replied with renewed fury, but was soon silenced by the Hypaspistai who moved closer to the center.
“Good, Menelaos. I see you are beggining to get the point. Try and control you anger next time, you surely don’t want to say something you will regret, now do you?”
Menelaos remained silent, thought his scarlet face clearly showed that he had much more to say, though he knew his adversary was right.
“Now then”, Diophantos continued.
“Seeing that we finally have peace in the chamber, I would like to continue what I started. As I said, the Synedrion has been called upon again to discuss the affairs of the Basileion. I will give you some basic information about our current situation, as well as happenings in the outside world that are of our interest.”
He then paused, took a deep breath, eyed the Synedroi once again one by one and continued: “First of all, as you may already know, the northern regions of Dardanoia and Odrysai have been brought under our rule in addition to the land we already control. Small garrisons have been left behind in order to deal with any possible future attack by the Thraikioi, though this does not guarantee the safety of those regions. Apart from that, Dardanoia has been declared a garrisoned allied state, while Odrysai is currently being ruled by Iolaos, a hellenized Thraikian under our immediate control, as a free state. Secondly, our total forces are currently stationed within the barrackses of Pella, awaiting our next order. Our economy is going well, our cities are finally showing some signs of a significant population raise and the building projects throughout the Basileion that have been ordered by Antigonos are going well. That, fellow Makedones, is the good news...”
Taking another short pause, he continued:
“The bad news is, that we have made even more enemies. Attacking the Getai north of Serdike wasn’t exactly a pleasing move and it didn’t only enrage the Getai. It is even rumored that several Thraikian tribes are currently planning to raise more hordes with intention of raiding and pillaging our lands. If that is not enough, it seems that the Romaioi are becoming less and less friendly with us, as we have rejected theirs pleads of military and naval help against the Kerchedonioi. While this may not sound very important, we know from our spy network in Megale Hellas that the Romaioi are soon going to drive the Karchedonioi away from Apoulia for good. After that, we may consider fortifying our western borders, as the Romaioi are both aggressive and unpredictable. They may just decide the want to ‘punish’ us for not helping them in their war. Also, a lot of tension seems to build lately in Anatolia, with the Seleukidai losing steady ground to the rest of the powers that threaten their rule. It seems that they may soon turn over to us, their loyal allies for many years, for help. So will will have to answer sooner or later, ot lose a very valuable and powerful ally.”
Diophantos waited for all this information to be properly absorbed by all Synedroi before he spoke again:
“Now, I would like to give word to Alkyoneus, who is here with us today to discuss his plans and ideas as to how the Basileion should moe next.”
Alkyoneus nodded, and after getting satisfactory nodding approvals by the Synedroi, he spoke in his loud, commanding voice:
“Fellow Makedones, I salute you. As you may know, my name is Alkyoneus Argeades, firstborn son of Antigonos and current leader of the forces of Makedonia by order of the Basileus himself. The first thing I would like to do, is make certain things clear to you all. I have not declared myself Basileus, nor do I see myself as one. Not until I know I have full support by you. The reason why I have taken the initiative in certain occasions, is because of my father’s inability to perform the way he did some years ago. I am acting on his own orders, as he too has realized some matters need fresh minds to attend them, matters that are too important for the well-being of the Basileion. You can verify everything I said by asking the Basileus himself, who unfortunately wasn’t able to attend the Synedrion today due to health problems.”
Alkyoneus waited patiently for any sings of opposition, which never came.
“Okay, now that I have made this clear, let us move on to what I was planning to tell you from the start. As you already heard from Diophantos, I have prepared a series of plans for the future of the Basileion, plans I believe will almost surely benefit us in all ways, politically, economically as well as military. Let me present you with a list I have prepared, a list which I will read out loudly.”
He then took a piece of pergamene which Diophantos handed over to him, opened it and read aloud:
“The first thing we should do, is attack the Aitolike Symmachia (Aetolian League) as fast as possible. Too long have they remained rebellious and too long have they meddled with our affairs. We can use the pretext of them inciting the rebellion in Demetrias led by Pythion in order to attack them. I, by your approval, will personally lead our full forces against them and take on their armies head-on in Aitolia. When Aitolia is captured and punished for their acts of rebelliousness, I believe it would be most rational to start the difficult process of fully hellenizing the northern barbaroi, as well as fortifying all major passages from Thraike to Hellas. When all this is done, we can move on by enforcing our naval and land forces. For the first we can further build more ships by timber from Makedonia herself, while we can strengthen our 2 standing armies by adding units of peltastai, hippotoxotai and better armored and trained hoplitai. We should also start a building project of a series of advanced barrackses all across Hellas, in order to provide more soldiers of better quality ready to serve the Basileion anytime. That, in liaison with lowered taxes for all those who join the ranks of the military at least part-time will also ensure more trustworthy troops. Lastly, I believe a series of more Katoikiai as well as other economic buildings will at least ensure that not more Hellenes are going to leave Hellas proper to the East.”
Alkyoneus took a deep breath and eyed every Synedros before speaking anew:
“So, Synedroi, you have heard my everything I had to say, not it is up to you to decide weather you agree or not, plus state any other ideas or opinions. The table, as usual, is open to everything...”

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
"Hear me out, my fellow kinsmen, oh Synedroi." Ischryos rose from his seat.
"Dear Menelaos, do not express your anger with such haste. For there's no need for heated words amongst fellow Makedonians. Save the words for our foes." He began, "On behalf of my friend Menelaos, I would like to express my deepest apologies to Diophantos. He is a straight-headed man, he knows little in the ways of decorating his words. Certainly you will not wish to paint Lord Alkyoneus a tyrant, by warranting punishment upon an honest man for a few brash words?"
Ischryos narrowed his eyes slightly, "Allow me to congratulate Lord Alkyoneus once again. He fought long and hard the campaigns, and he's fought even longer and harder for the Basileion he loves. He has endured sacrifices for Makedonia that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead."
"So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this barbaroi taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Arch while The Basileion suffers -- in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people."
He continues, "Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics and forces for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from OUR Makedonia who first carried the banner of Hellenism to the the corners of Terra -- a man with the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we should share, and while the Makedonia has gone through great progress inthe recent years, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our advancement. As Mega Alexandros said to a hellas far more divided than ours, 'A bad hellenes is as bad as a barbaroi, while a good barbaroi is as good as a poleis-krate.'"
"To those who would tear Makedonia down -- we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security -- we support you. And to all those who have wondered if Makedonia's beacon still burns as bright as the days of Mega Alexandros --today we shall prove once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: demokratia, honour, opportunity, and unyielding valour."
"For that is the true genius of Makedonia -- that Makedonia can change. Our union can be perfected. And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow. March on, Makedonia will be strong again. We shall rebuild what the decades of war have shredded, Arche Makedonia will rise once more. ALL HAIL MAKEDONIA!!!"

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Antigonos Aiginios is clearly one of the more worried members of the Synedrioi, yet not one of the shouting ones. He exchanges several worried whispers with nearby members of the Synedrioi about the wherabouts of the king and why the council chambers are being held under control by the Hypaspistai, of whom he himself is a part of. While he would rather kiss a Furies than pronounce the legitimate heir to the throne as a tyrant, he is indeed a little worried about the recent turn of events. His unwavering loyalty to the Arche, however, aswell as his loyalty to a man he has served under and greatly respects keeps him from doing anything he would later regret...
As the Synedrioi calms down and order is restored in the chamber, he speaks up;
Honoured Basileus, your descision is indeed wise, and quite frankly, I agree with it fully. I have nothing as of now that I can think of that would need altering. We should indeed focus on attacking the Aitolike Symmachia, seeing as recent political... events has played in our favour, enabling us to hold them responsible and thereby declare an honest war upon them. I fully support the proposition that we march against them with great force, swiftness and determination. Speaking about our brothers in the east, the Seleucids, I do think we should honour our friendship and alliance with them and send any help we can possibly spare to them. We should however, be careful if we enter Mikra Asia, seeing that we do not get ourselves mixed up in too much of the politics going on in the east. Atleast for now, seeing that we have more pressing concerns in Europe. We should also, as you said, reinforce our holdings to the north from further Thracian and Barbarioi attacks. I suggest that we create a series of forts on our northern border, stationing small forces of Makedonike troops there, along with support from local troops. This will serve several purposes. It will form a bond between our troops and the local troops of these regions, as they will live and fight side by side, thus hopefully strengthening the bonds between them and us, aswell as hopefully hellenize them to a certain extent. They will also learn to trust us in battle, and obey our orders without hesitation, seeing the superiority in our tactics. It will also show the locals that we care for them and wish to protect them, further strengthening their loyalty to the Arche. Ofcourse, it is also protecting our assets in the northern regions, the mines.
Now, if I may, I would like to present a brief strategic plan of how these fortresses would work. We would position fortresses in key strategical areas in our northern regions, such as near cities, strategic choke-points and so forth. These would be manned by rather small garrisons of soldiers, both local and from our core-provinces. The purpose of the fortresses would be not to repell an enemy attack all by itself, but rather, with a chain of fortresses with communicatins between them, they would be able to hold out and pin an invading enemy army into one place, untill several neighbouring fortresses have rallied at the beseiged fortress. They would then have enough strength to repell almost any threat that the northern barbarioi might be able to throw at us. It will, asides from strengthening the loyalty of the northern provinces, also give many of our new young recruits real battle experience and experince about how it is to live, fight, march and sleep in the field. I am also confident that many officers would find this solution to be beneficial, seeing as they would also recieve alot of experience from it. Besides, perhaps many new commanding talents are to be found?
What say the others of you, brothers, sympatrioi?

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
*Menelaos stands up and addresses Ischyros with renewed anger*
"The last person I would allow myself to be lectured about controlling my anger is you, Thraikian. You watch your tongue carefully, most of us - if not all - are at least 10 years older than you. This is gathering of true Makedones and do not forget that it is you who bring that dreadful rhomphaia with you all the time, waving with it like a child's toy and shouting! And let us not forget that it was you under the wing of Alkyoneus who battled against the barbaroi and enjoyed the spoils of conquest, while we were trembling just with the idea of Alexandros turning against us!"
*some Synedroi rise from both Menelaos' and Ischyros' side, ready to fight each other, but where stopped by the Hypaspistai who got in between them*
"HA! See, that is what I mean! Now we got this, for the first time in history! Armed men in our noble Synedrion, by Alkyoneus' order! And you tell me to control my anger? Shame on you!"
*Alkyoneus stands up and booms at the people embroiled in the ongoing fight*
"How dare you insult me with your words, the only thing I want and ever wanted is the best for the Basileion! I am a Makedon like you, an Argeades! I am a descendant of Megas Alexandros himself, how would I possibly wish to hurt a Makedon!? If you trully believe so, then I hereby offer you my place in the Basileion and I will banish myself from my homeland, for I will trully have failed my cause and I not longer wish to be called a Makedonian..."
*the Synedrion falls silent quickly, with every Synedros sitting back to his place. Even Menelaos falls silent*
"Very well, my lord. You may keep your position, I don't want it... Just do the right thing and I will follow you..."
-
Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Ischryos remain smiling...Still standing, he turned to face the Synedroi. The Makedonian sunburst engraved on his rhomphia glowed as sunlight reflected upon it. He gave his belt a slight adjustment and glanced at one of the hypaspitai's shield for half a second.
Alpha and Epsilon.
"We are all servants of Makedonia. Neither Alkyoneus nor Lord Alexandros are the Basileus of Makedonia at this moment. As always, regardless of head's blood, we Airetikos serve only the Basileus of Makedonia." He turns to face Alkyoneus, "Our Basileus is unavailable, are you the one carrying his duties in his stead?"
Alkyoneus gave a silent nod. "Then to the ends of Terra we shall follow, in the name of Antigonos." Ischyros bowed.
Turning to his seat, he winked to his Uncle, sitting at the back. Satalextos gave his nephew a curt nod of approval.

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Good writing there, satalexton. I was thinking of the forming of two political parties within the Basileion, one representing the Alkyoneus-followers and the other the Alexandros-followers. What do you think about that?
Maion
-
Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
thats a good idea =D
but the house of Airetikos only follows the Basileus, so they're 'neutral' =P
-
Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
I think starting two political parties sounds like a great idea. Perhaps make a mini-update about the different persons, their politics and current status (military and political might etc.) to make it easier for us to choose.:sweatdrop:
Oh, and yeah, staying neutral is one way of doing it... But that can come with it's own disadvantages. So staying neutral is surely not going to keep you out of trouble, as far as Macedonian politics go! :2thumbsup:

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
After having remained silent for some time, Machinoros rises from his chair. His movements are slightly slower and his stance is not as firm as they were a few years ago. His body clearly hints at his growing age, but his eyes show that he still is a keen thinker and focused political analyst. As he begins to speak, his voice is soothing and calm:
"My fellow Makedones... this is a time of change. The old men are retiring, a new generation takes the rudder of our Basileion. This brings changes, which is important. In a changing world, that which stands still, dies. Life is change. Change is vital. Some of us might not always like the way our world changes but that should not turn us into obdurate political die-hards. As the great philosopher Aristotle said, necessity determines the laws and how the laws may be enforeced. Certain necessities might force us to take actions ans measures one might not enjoy but must carry out for the grater good of the people and the Basileion.
Therefor, I welcome your keen actions against the barbaroi and the measures you carried out to prevent any confusion and irritation within our state. Inner peace and stability are our utmost priority."
Machinoros seems to be wanting to sit down again...
"However...!"
He stands up again. this time his movements and stance are firm again. So is his voice.
"Necessity may demand certain actions but it does not justify everything! You told this Synedrion that you have no ambition of taking the throne before your dear father would make you his rightful successor and believe you, since you are an honorable man. You said, that your only interests lie only in the best for Makedonia and we believe you, since you are an honorable man.
BUT... how justify you *THIS*?!"
Machinoros points at the armed and mailed men of the Hypaspistai.
"This Synedrion follows the ancient tradition of our people that the Basileus is a supreme ruler but not because his people are his property but instead because his people deem him worthiest. Every Makedonian Basileus has always respected the council. Even great Alexandros, who was considered reckless and stubborn, still respected his advisors as equal Makedonians. Only later in his life he was lead astray by the eastern barbarinas around him, turning him into a half-Persian tyrant.
Do you want to step into his footsteps? Do you want to force your will upon free Makedones? Or do you fear this council? Do you mistake us for greedy and insidious Romaioi who murder their rightful kings? You restrained your brother Alexandros in Thraikia because he became reckless with ambition. Yet you yourself plan to overthrow the Aitolians who may not have been our subjects, but who have never opposed us openly liek the Southern Greek alliance and who remained neutral, when their neighbour Epeiros waged war against us. It was the Aitolians that formed a landblock between Epeiros and the Southern Poleis, preventing them from uniting against us. And now you want to punish them and take away their freedom although they do not pose a threat? You told us that you do not seek to be a tyrant and we believe you since you are an honorable man. But what should the Hellenes all over the world think of you, Alkyoneus?! Do they know that your intentions are honorable? Or will they look upon your actions and make up their own opinion? The free poleis are a complicated matter, they are like a heap of sand. The firmer your grip, the more will run through your fingers. And if more and more run through your fingers, then more and more may turn to our enemies whoever they will be. You may dismiss my concerns and say that we will put them in line with our mighty army, but I tell you this, young Alkyoneus: The pen may not be mightier than the sword but at least equally important. Forgive me if I call a spade a spade, but propaganda is the essence of every greater campaign. Alexandros knew this and only through his propaganda was he able to unite all of Greece against the Persians.
I may have said too much, but it had to be said. I am old and I the day on which I may retire to my home is not that distant anymore. So I have nothing to lose and I do not fear disadvantages that come with the uttering of these words."
After a pause of few seconds he again continues in a calm voice:
"I second Antigonos advise to establish border forts against the Barbarian threat from the North. And if the tensions with the Romans become more urgent, we should think about bringing the war to "their" soil and liberate Taras. But only if war seems inevitable."
Then he sits down again.
--------
Two factions sounds good. I'd like a "presentation" of each faction (their position on political various matters etc.) though to better be able to chose. Election Campaign 270 BC!!! ;)
Btw, I'm sorry that my speeches are always that long. Seems like I get carried away easily. :/

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
*Alkyoneus, after hearing Machinoros speak, sits up calmly and addresses the man*
"Noble and wise Machinoros, your words have always been wise and rational. I see that you too seem to be worried of my intentions, but let me explain things to you. This does not only apply to Machinoros, but any other Synedros as well."
*Alkyoneus scans the Synedroi one by one before continuing*
"Those men here, the Hypaspistai, have been ordered by me to present here. While I have given this a lot of consideration, I finally decided to bring them with me. Not with intention of harming anyone, rather than make sure nothing would go wrong within the Synedrion. You already saw what happened before, plus I am certain that there are more than one who would wish me harm. I have done certain things that many don't like and much more have misunderstood. And believe me, I care too much for the Basileion as to be killed now and end everything forever. For, by the gods, if someone like Alexandros takes up the throne, our beloved Basileion will fall into the abyss."
*Alkyoneus waits for the murmur to subside by some of the Synedroi*
"As for the Aitolioi now, I believe there are more than enough reasons to wage war against them. While they have never openly defied us, they have supported others to do so, both economically as well as military. That, is a good reason enough to punish them for me. I do not forgive the enemies of Makedonia and I will not rest until they have payed the price. When I said we should wage war against them, I believed it would be obvious that we will first send embassies to order their surrender. But, since I know those southern Hellenes, there is very little chance that they will just surrender. Just think of all the benefits we will gain as well, with most important of all the control of the Delphoi. With that, we will control the southern Hellenes fully at last. That is me, but remember you can always refuse my proposals. It all depends on you, Synedroi, do not forget that."
*Alkyoneus finally sets his eyes upon Machinoros, whom he addresses with a smile*
"Wise Machinoros, I truly respect and admire you very much. Your words are very important to me, for it is through the guidance of the old and wise that the young and inexperienced can move on."
Good to see you with us again, Machinor! Thanks for the constant support also and as for the replies, I like them long:wink: Plus, they really show your level of interest in the AAR, something that deeply honors me. I will post a list of the two parties soon, also.

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Philadelphios sat silently as he always used to, then stood up and started to speak:
„ Fellow Makedones. I must admit that what I see now is something I could have only imagined in my worst nightmares, The Basileus is suffering from bad health, the Synedrion seems divided and I am sure the enemies of the Basileion are plotting against us as I speak
He takes a short break and continues:
"Alkyoneus! I believe I speak for every Synedros within these walls if I guaranty you our unquestionable loyalty to the royal house and the Basileion and of course to you since you are no doubt the one your father has destined to become the next Basileus and I can understand your worries but still I believe to have en entire squadron of Hypaspistai escort you within the halls of the Synedrion is not apropiate.”
“To you Machinoros I must say that your words are those of a wise man and your intentions are no doubt just and for the better of us all …. however I believe you misinterpret the deeds of the Aitolians. The only reason why they have not joined any side in the past war is because they wanted to see who comes out victorious. They would never accept a true Basileus as there lord, neither would they have accepted Pyrrhos nor Antigonos. They are like all the other Southern Poleis who see no further then there own coffers and will stab anyone in the back as soon as they see the opportunity for it. They use there Silver tongues to cause conflict between there rivals and side with anyone to reach there goal.
Who knows… maybe they will turn to the Romaioi or the Karchedonioi and promise that all of Hellas will rise against us just to convince them to wage war against our Basileion. In times such as these we can not allow any of the southern Hellenes to question the rule of the Basileus. We must strike as swift as possible and burn these foolish Aitolians of the face of the earth. I agree with Alkyoneus that they must be dealt with as soon as possible. My family has always supplied and trained some of the best Hetairoi Hellas has ever seen. I am sure they would gladly join an expedition against those Aitolians”
Philadelphios is about to sit down but then speaks again: … “and the northern borders must be secured against the Barbaroi and we need to be ready for war against the Romaioi if necessary. But still first of all we must secure Aitolia.”
He then sits down and waits for the reaction of the other Synedroi and Alkyoneus.
(I like the Idea of a "two party" system:beam: - could become a nice twist:2thumbsup:. I just hope it won't lead to civil war...:dizzy2:)

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
The Alkyoneidai (philo-Alkyoneus party)
Leader: Alkyoneys Argeades. A loyal Makedonian who takes after his father, Antigonos Argeades. While he is the likely heir to the throne, he still needs approval by the Synedrion as soon as his father passes away. He is a true Makedonian and very strict, as well as distrustful to foreigners and any non-Makedones in general. It is widely known that he uses his mad-going father as a tool in order to rule the Basileion, as he believes the love of the people for him would benefit him. His open conflict with Alexandros has led him into forcing the latter to return to Pella under constant watch of a number of Hypaspistai.
Oppinions of the Alkyoneidai: The Alkyoneidai are people who generally support the ideas of Alkyoneus, meaning they are strict, disciplined and very loyal. They distrust outsiders much and believe the Basileion needs only strict organization to survive and no big changes. Priorities are a strong and able military as well as strong economy, but prefer introversion. They also favor meddling with the western affairs, with interest in 'liberating' Megale Hellas in order to gain a foothold on Italian soil.
More or less, this party applies to very traditional Makedones, as well as those that have any position in the Makedonian military.
The Alexandreidai (philo-Alexandros party)
Leader: Alexandros Argeades. A loyal Makedonian and nephew of Antigonos Argeades. He has always been a candidate of the throne, something that quickly brought him in open conflict with Alkyoneus. As a man he is very friendly, optimistic and open-minded, as well as very smart. He believes the Basileion needs drastical changes in order to again become a dominant power, something not many Makedones agree with. It is publicly known that he spends large amount of his own income to supply the poor with food, as well as large sums for the upkeep of the Makedonian military. He is currently stationed in Pella, kept under close watch by Alkyoneus.
Oppinions of the Alexandreidai: The Alexandreidai are people who generally support the ideas of Alexandros, meaning they are loyal, open-minded and believe the Basileion needs change to move on. They are less interested in strictness and traditionalism and more on development of educational and economic buildings, rather than military ones. They also favor meddling in the eastern affairs, with a distant possibility of even a campaign to regain the lands that are rightfully Makedonian.
More or less, this party applies to more open-minded and educated Makedonians who want change for their Basileion.
So, this is a brief list of both parties and their opinions as you asked for. Let's see how this is going to evolve! Also, for the fun of it, you can compare this to the American elections. Basically, it's McCain (Alkyoneus) vs Obama (Alexandros) in an America without the crisis it's going through right now:laugh4:

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Antigonos stands up, joining in the discussion that seems to have been started by Machinoros.
Machinoros.. Friend, brother.
My family has never been known for our diplomatic nor political abilites, though I do think that you approach the matter with the Aitolioi in the wrong direction. Make no misstake about it, I, and when saying I, I speak for my entire house, hold you in great esteem and respect, so do not take this personally. But it is as our Basileus, Alkyoneus, says. They may not oppose us directly, but financially and indirectly, they have long been supporters of anti-Macedonian parties. While we have no direct proof of it, our network of spies and diplomats strongly hints at the fact that the recent rebel-leaders Pythion and Genuos were supported with gold, advisors and other benefits from the Aitolioi. It is, I consider, reason enough to declare a formal act of war upon them. However, as Alkyoneus also said, diplomatic negotiations will be made beforehand, as to hopefully evade bloodletting. It is true what you say Machinoros, while they may oppose us, they have also been beneficial to us in the past, and as such, I personally would not enjoy spilling their blood, could it be avoided. It is true aswell, that we must secure the propaganda of Alkyoneus as to not make distant Hellenic Poleis think of him as a tyrant. Not that he is Basileus just yet, mind you.
It makes me happy to see that so many of you, brothers, are agreed upon fortifying our northern borders. However, I would like to know more about what you think of my proposal? Lest it be totally forgotten in the discussion about politics, that is equally important, ofcourse, but should not be this councils only concern.
By the way, honourable Basileus, what are your intents about Alexandros, if I may boldly ask? We know that he is currently here in Pella, and that you fear your for your own security. It would seem as if you suspect him of hiring assassins against you, or even, that you fear some of us in the council, your equal brothers. To what extent does Alexandros holds power?
As we have all noticed, currently a group of Hypaspistai is guarding you within these chambers. I would like to announce my interest in having you entrusting me with the charge of these men. My family has always held esteemed position within this fine unit, a position my father had, and his father before him. I consider myself worthy, both physically, but also mentally, to lead them, tasked with the much important task of safeguarding your life, my Basileus. Not only in my ability as a loyal subject to the royal family, but also as the heir to a house which has always supported the true Basileus of the Macedones!
Out of character; As you may notice, I am a Alkyoneidai by heart. By the way, how should the Alexandreidai show their support? I would advice that anyone interested in joining that party should somehow declare it in an in-character response (Perhaps not outright, yet still) and that you, Maion, write a post where you take the role of Alexandros. Perhaps in some locale/estate in which a "secret meeting" is taking place for supporters of Alexandros. Then, we could have posters (members of the AAR first and foremost) choose wether they post in the Synedrioi, or the "hidden party locale" of Alexandros. Ofcourse, us in the Synedrioi that supports Alkyoneus will not know what the followers of Alexandros dicsusses in their hidden locale, and supporters of Alexandros can still post in the Synedrioi (As they are still council-members and would not want to arouse suspicion). That would also mean that they would know everything said in the Synedrioi, thus granting them a strategic edge, which would be fair considering Alexandros "underdog-position", not controlling the Synedrioi up front. What do you all think?

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
*Alkyomeus rises up from his seat and addresses Antigonos*
"Brave Antigonos, I hope that you understand if I'm not willing to discuss my further intentions in open public. If anyone wishes to have further information, he can find me after the Synedrion ends. For now the only thing I can say is that I have a certain plan in mind, a plan I do not wish to be known just yet for obvious reasons."
*Alkyoneus gets a more serious expression and continues*
"As for the leadership of my Hypaspistai guard, while I trust and honor you and your family much, I have to reject your offer. You will continue to lead your unit of Hypaspistai as usual, but the unit that protects me watches Alexandros will remain under my personal command."
I will try and think of something like you said, Socy and create different "conversation rooms". I have already tried to organize our meetings by announcing the beginning and ending of each Synedrion, but I will have to work this out and post my decision here.

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Antigonos is clearly a little offended by Alkyoenus answers, yet retains his cool manner (Cool as in "steady", just for clarification).
My Basileus.. If that is your.. Will. Then so be it. Know though, that should you require anything at all, the house of Aiginios will supply it in abundance. That is all, my Basileus.

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Ischryos quietly shifted to the back, next to his Uncle, Satalextos.
"They are begining to take sides, just as you predicted, Uncle"
"And so they have, good nephew...so they have..."
"What shall we do next? Our stance of neutrality will draw enemies from both parties shud the heat between them continue to rise..." Ischyros is wary of the drawbacks.
"We are the misbelievers," Satalextos smiled. "Though it may be complicated and troubling, being the <gimme a name for "neutral", maion> has it's advantages....Demokratia, afterall, is a hellenic quality..."
"In abit of a restricted form, I must add." Said Ischryos, "Being the mediators, this will be a tough and thankless task."
"But the few allies that we may gain will be lasting ones." replied Satalextos, clearly not worried at all. "Our house's only goal is to unite hellenes back under the Makedonian banner. For that to happen, we need stability, especially political stability. Afterall, the ends justifies the means. We have a clear set of "ends" that we shall meet, the "means" matter little to us."
Machinoros and Antigonos started their respective speeches, many are starting to take their respective sides.
"You speak like a 'hero of justice' Uncle." Ischryos grinned, "But that is not a face that the 'hero of justice' would have."
"Honour to the house, Glory for Makedonia, For the Basileus to the ends of Terra."
"Who is to become the next Basileus then?"
"Does it matter?" Satalextos gave a fickle smile, looking quite young again.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The house of Airetikos stands in the 'third' side. They serve only the Basileus...be he mad or not... The only way to garner their OFFICIAL and FULL support, is to BE the Basileus... Note that is seems that our current head of House (Satalextos) don't really care WHO becomes the next Basileus of Makedonia...

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
*Alkyoneus smiles and addresses Antigonos*
"I'm happy that you understand my wishes. Know that by no means I want to offend you or your family, but that you will understand in the course of time. I will never forget what your father did for me, Antigonos, know that. He saved me as well as the whole Basileion from destruction and humiliation and that will always be remembered by everyone."
"If you want to discuss this more in depth, I will be more than willing to do so after the Synedrion ends."
I would like to wish you a happy birthday, Socy, as it seems (according to the small birthday cake under your avatar) you do so today. I wish health, happiness and that everything goes well in your life! As for the word 'neutral' in Greek, satalexton, I think 'oudeteros' would be ok.

Thanks Maion, that is indeed true, birthday today :clown:! Bit OT but anyway. :)

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Happy belated birthday, Socy! I hope you had a good birthday party worthy of a Makedonian drunkard. :D
Thank you, Maion, for your kind words. It's easy to remain interested in your AAR since you maintain such high quality of entertainment. :)
But still I'm afraid I won't be able to participate as much in the next weeks. I'm literally drowning in work for the University. But I'll keep checking in regularly and try to write as often as I can.
The political parties sound nice, but I'd like to make a suggestion: Since it is a bit boring to be a complete pacifist in a game named "Total War", why not make the distinction between followers of Alexandros and Alkyoneus to be where each party wants to campaign, instad of making it a warmonger-pacifist-distinction. So one of the parties could be for intervention in Mikra Asia while the other would be more in favor of an intervention in Italia. Maion could establish the house rule, that only one major campaign could be undertaken at a time (of course invasions from neighbors or smaller campaigns against rebel stacks would not count as a major campaign). Plus: The party "winning the vote" on where to intervene would mostly go to war with its favored heir, leaving the other party at home to deal with infrastructure-management and defensive military actions etc. That would give the whole AAR a very dynamic twist and provide us with a kind of equilibrium so no heir gets the upper hand for too long periods of time.
Of course that would mean more "work" for poor Maion (;)) as he'd have to manage both factions in game.
-
Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Thank you for your kind words too, Machinor!
About your work, I completely understand you as I too am very busy with with it... I think it is enough when I say that they decided to make delivering exercises and writing tests obligatory:sweatdrop:
Anyway, I will consider your proposal which sounds very interesting. Let me just clarify one thing: Alexandros is not a pacifist, as he does favor campaigns in general as well. It's just that he considers his moves more than Alkyoneus, who likes to throw everything he has in order to gain power, without thinking very much about the consequences.
Thank you again for the support and good luck with your work!
Ending of the Synedrion

Re: From Basileion to Arche - An interactive Makedonian campaign/AAR
Dawn of a New Age
Alkyoneus begun military preparations immediately during the beginning of Eiar, 519th year after the First Olympiad (Spring, 257BC), while at the meantime he sent an embassy to Aitolia. The process of organizing and drilling troops would at least take a season, but the time hole would be patched by the - hopefully - lengthy diplomatic negotiations. The total number of troops that where being gathered where estimated to be about 31.320 men.
http://img33.picoodle.com/img/img33/...1m_4db7c3f.png
While Alkyoneus was busy preparing the army for war against the Aitolioi, in Anatolia there seemed to be a growing tension. Namely, the Basileion Pergamou, after having declared themselves independent for quite some time, had begun gathering forces. This not only worried the rest of the powers in the region, but also from the islands close to the coasts of Mikra Asia. Most of them swore allegiance to Makedonia, thus they turned to Antigonos for help. The only thing Alkyoneus did, was to send a minor sum of coins in order to prepare defenses for the islands.
Months went by, and by the end of Phthinoporon (Autumn) of the same year, all diplomatic negotiations had ended between Makedonia and the Aitolike Synomospondia. Iphikrates had refused surrender, thus Alkyoneus decided to march against the polis as soon as possible. This move surprised the Aitolioi, as it was not customary for armies to march as the first droplets of rain covered the thirsty Hellenic soil.
The polis of Thermon, which acted as the capital of Aitolia, was a proper Hellenic polis, quite populated and defended by a considerable amount of soldiers. More specifically, spies informed Alkyoneus that approximately 21.780 well-equipped and trained men guarded the polis along with the surrounding area.
http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/...4m_9f74bd6.png
When Alkyoneus finally started marching towards the Aitolioi, an awful announcement came to him; his father, Basileus Antigonos Argeades, slayer of barbaroi, Hegemon of Hellas and just ruler, had died. It seemed that the illness he was going through finally got the best of him, and the gods decided it was time for him to depart for the afterlife...
http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/...5m_c8699a0.png
This sudden event that took place caused a chain of reactions; within Pella, the people where mourning the passing if their great leader, with many even leaving Pella. The Synedrion itself was heavily shaken, even though most of them knew it was a matter of time for the great leader to die. It was as if thunder had struck the whole Basileion numb, with the greatest blow being delivered upon Alkyoneus.
As was customary, a great burial took place in Pella that lasted for two weeks. Alkyoneus himself returned to Pella in order to personally arrange the funeral. All military activity was postponed until Cheimon (Winter) of the same year, while no cheerful event was allowed throughout the whole Basileion. Every single citizen of Pella attained the funeral of Antigonos, which was a magnanimous one - truly befitting such a great man.
After the funeral was over, Alkyoneus immediately departed for Aitolia again. It is said that he didn’t shed a single tear during the whole process, but in truth Alkyoneus was utterly shaken. Many misinterpret that, with some even thinking that Antigonos’ death was arranged by his son. Alexandros, on the other hand, openly showed his grief, gaining even more favor by the people and the Synedrion.
If this all was not enough for the Basileion, the great polis of Pergamon decided to declare war upon Makedonia by invading Mytilene, a major port controlling trade between the Aigaion and the Euxeinos Pontos. It seemed that the allied polis had to face the might of Pergamon on their own for now.

http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/...7m_d7b3fdc.png
With Alkyoneus gone for campaigning and Alexandros finally free – for the moment – from Alkyoneus’ clutches, the Basileion was starting to shout for a new heir. But that would have to be postponed until Eiar (Spring) of the next year, as it would require a full audience in the Synedrion in order for a new Basileus to be enthroned. Things seemed to be against Alkyoneus this time, though he commanded the Royal forces and was determined to take the throne at all costs...
