I won lots of awards and stuff, but the odd thing is i never remember the trophies or the winning of games, its mostly the praise i used to get from people who knew the game that really humbled me. I remember a chap who was once a coach for the Leeds United youth team came upto me and said he hasnt seen anyone as quick and techniquely gifted as me since Scott Sellers (80's and early 90's footballer), and gave me a big slap on the back, still makes me smile now.
On a similar occasion we were playing the number one school in the area (we always came second) and my rival nemisis, a lad called Darren, who was the best striker id ever played against as a youth. He was tall, exceptionally quick, strong, good in the air, just a very very good player. I always played centre back for the school team and before the game the lads decided i should man mark him on the theory that if he cant play, their team cant play. So i did, and it was possibly the best performance i can recall, he hardly got a touch, and ended up cursing all his teammates(by then we were a couple of goals up) and then i knew it was all over. His dad, and the manager of the opposition came up to me and both congratulated me, and even a very angry darren, came upto me and asked me to join his saturday league team, and best of all i got a bucket of water thrown over me too by my manager!
I never got the chance to be a pro, never had a trail, or even a scout come upto me and ask my name, but everyone that i still see these days, dads, ex teammates etc, cant believe i never got the chance. The weird thing is a lad who lived down my road, who always used to get hammered by me at football is now playing for Shrewsbury Town!!! GAH! Getting paid £2'000 a week! I gave up playing for my education in the end, but theres always that part in the back of your brain that says "If only.."
Oh well.....im a Blackburn fan btw! Born and bred!
