Re: HAIL New Members! (Introduction) v.III
Hello everyone. I'm a big fan of the Total War series even though i only have MTW. I've had the game for more than a couple of years now and have completed it victoriously on a few occasions. I love history, primarily Roman and Dark Age European history and how the barbarians shaped modern Europe. Being a desecendant of one of the steppe peoples i find myself interested particularly in the origins and history of peoples like the scythians, huns, sarmatians, magyars etc.
Looking forward to many good discussions here.

Welcome Tarkhan Samsam! You will find plenty of history at the Monastry and many steppe enthusiasts (eg. Steppe Merc) and occassionally true experts (jurchen fury) too. May I ask, which steppe people is that? :charge:

Howdy folks, I've been playing RTW since November and love it. Before that I've mostly played WoW and SWG. I've been reading these forums for several weeks and have seen alot of good advice and interesting posts. I hope I can cotribute to both.

- Archaic: virginity or chastity, especially of a woman
(New Oxford Dictonary of English)
In the game, your unit leaders (whether they are king, prince, general, governor or just commaning officer of a group of peasants) will develop vices and virtues (often indicated as V&V's), like good/bad commander, pious/heretic, drunkard, corrupt, herioc leader, great warrior and so on, that will affect their performance either in battle or as governor. Most of them directly influence piety, command, acumen, loyalty or dread, but some are less noticable, for example susceptibility to bribes or increases/decreases in farming, trade or mining income. Agents do not get V&V's.

Yes, they can be changed, most often through V&V's. Most V&V's are random, but there methods to increase your generals stats.
Influence can be gained by succesful crusades, conquering provinces and relieving sieges of your allies' castles. Failed crusades or losing provinces decreases influence. Influence improves loyalty of generals and provinces and should make it easier to bend other nations to your will. Also, high-influence kings tend to get sons with higher stats, and also will get an occasional one- or two-star general or admiral when recruiting.
Loyalty is mainly dependent on the King's influence, but marrying a princess to a general or giving him titles also helps. Treason trails may increase the loyalty of other generals, provided they succeed. If they fail, expect a loyalty hit, not in the least with the tried general. If all else fails, keeping generals in the King's stack will make them more loyal, as well as making it impossible for them to revolt. Loyalty determines susceptibility to bribes and the chance a general will revolt against you. A low-loyalty, high-command general commanding a powerful stack is a severe liability, especially if he is of royal blood or married to a princess.
Piety is gained by staying in high-zeal provinces. An inquisition trail can give both piety-increasing and piety decreasing V&V's, provided the defendant does not get burned. Commanding crusades also increases piety. Piety is mainly useful as defence against inquisitors. Also, high-zeal provinces don't take wel to low-piety governors and low-zeal provinces don't like high-piety governors.
Dread scares the populace into loyalty. It is gained by killing prisoners on the battlefield or ordering all rebels put to death after a rebellion. Remember though that the first action also results in a lower morale for the army and the second decreases the hapines of the population (although both actions need to be carried out two or three times before the adverse effects appear).
There is no known way to gain acumen, but with a governor it increases the provinces income with ten procent and with the king it increases the kingdom's income with two percent.

Is there more to it then building the boats/docks/trading post & putting some boats in the ocean where other docks are.... ( and every connecting square between yours & theres )
To trade you need a trading post or higher merchant, a dock and an unbroken line of ships to a port held by a neutral or allied faction. You cannot trade with your own or enemy provinces, or with provinces that do not have a port. Also remember that profits from exports are shown in the merchant building-scroll and not the port building-scroll. The port derives income from importing goods from other factions (I though it was 20% of the export profits, but I am not sure).
Incidentally, if you want to ask more questions, you should start your own thread in the Entrance Hall. This thread is just for introductions.

It's not to say that games don't stimulate thought & study, they do, I study the crap out of every game I play, from guides to forums, to films, & practice practice practice, but it's not the kind of study that leads to success in school =P
Hey talonferguson.....thanks for your comments...I can see what you mean.
Heck I would I have loved History a la Medieval Total War when I was at school.
:book: :bounce:
It's just that when I see a significant number of kids struggling with mainstream academic work, it'd be great to somehow channel the energy and enthusiasm they have for games into something that does contribute to their school success.
The Head of English at my school apparently wrote a paper on this - he was a Diablo fan back then - he's left us now unfortunately.
Anyway.....here's to many victories on the fields of MTW for you.....hope you enjoy the org

Depends on who you are. Age of Empires:Rise of Rome made me interested in ancient history. And RTW only added to that interest.

Re: HAIL New Members! (Introduction) v.III
THanks Ludens, You the man!
MatrixMan... Will kids ever be engrossed in learning? Im skeptical =P
My 8th grade history teacher had us do a Paper-&dice 'risk' game for japanese history, on a huge board, assigning a rice value to each square, I'm amazed now at how much it was like Shoguns strategy mode. I also did a 'jeopardy' on middle eastern culture. I won both these games =P Hardy-har. but they were my most remembered study subjects, without a doubt, because of this competitive, interactive approach.
I dunno... Maybe tie lessons into a MMORPG 'quest' type system =P and let the kids play WOW all day =)
I think we're a long way from grasping an entertaining learning system, where kids would prefer school over.... anything but =P
but it's a great idea. It'll happen someday, In our lifetimes? I wonder.
I'll take my rants to a more appropriate forum now =)

Hello folks. Im little off from net around these times, but I try to pop in and discuss about things when possible. I have been playing rome total war for god knows how long and haven't played anything else since. Im going to try out total realism since it seems to change the colours of the troops a little more bearable, like those horrible eachaching parthians!

Yes, DukeOfSerbia has been with us for almost a year now.
Ludens answered your avatar question. Near the top of each page, look for the link "show avatars". That will display the pool of avatars we ask you to chose from (they are from the 3 games and expansion packs).
